3 November 2017 International Reps Rant Hi to all! When I took the job of International Rep everyone that voted to elect me said if you need any help I m here or you have our support. Well I am taking you up on that, I need your help in finding a suitable place in Montana to hold our 2018 International. If you all could go online and search for RV Campgrounds. Look them over, maybe contact them and see what they have to offer. Then if you find one that you feel would work for us, I or another State or Provincial Rep will be assigned to look further into the spot. I think the criteria are as follows: 1. Restrooms and showers enough to accommodate 80 to 150 people so at least 3 men s stools 3 ladies and at least 2 showers 3 would be great. 2. RV spots for rent for those that have RV s, and how close hotels are to the campground. 3. Pricing for Tent camping, how many tents per tent site. Do they have Tent sites with electricity handy for c pap machines? RV sites pricing and for information is there cabins. It is really important to get the name of the person you spoke to, and if they feel they would like to host a Motorcycle Rally, some will not! I would appreciate anyone s help in this. It s very important we do this now so we can get our ride calendar set. I have not gotten very many questionnaires back that I sent out in August. Please fill them out give me your opinion or tell me to go to hell, at least I would be getting a response. We talk about promoting our club, talking to as many riders or just people that might have questions, but I think we don t see instant results and give up. That is the wrong thing to do! I had a lady 2 years ago at our Connell Spring Banquet ask me about the UMCI, I didn t even know she rode. She contacted me about a month ago asking if I was still involved? I told her our Columbia Basin meeting place and time. Low and behold, Sunday at our meeting she rode in on her Can Am. It was only about 35 that time in the morning, so she is tough. She stayed for breakfast and seemed to have a great time, so maybe another member. So it may not be instant, but plant the seed and see what follows, it may surprise you. Remember please, this is your Club and it is a great club to be part of. Get involved in your club wherever you can, it will not only make you feel more of a part of UMCI, but you will meet some fantastic people in the process. Again, please give the questionnaires to your Area Rep so we can figure out what direction to go. If you have not received a questioner ask you Rep about it. What weather is left for riding please Ride Safe Ride Lot s but most of all have a ton of fun Very Respectfully Kevin and Kevi Besel Oh and by the way I rode my motorcycle to our breakfast first time in 3 years and it felt so so good. Back in the saddle for sure. 3

4 October 2017 Rep s Rambling Bummer I just got belated news that we lost Arlie Kerchum a couple weeks ago. He was one of our founding fathers. Sadly, since we didn t hear about it, we had no one attending his services. Year-end coming soon Well it is definitely fall! While we have had some really nice sunny days, the weather has definitely changed, with generally cooler temperatures. I actually had to turn the heat on this morning. I think that is the first time since maybe May. Sad to see, but after a hot summer, we really need some rain. The change in seasons brings shorter daylight hours. And it also means we are closing in on the end of another year. This one has gone by real fast. I received a nice thank you card from our wonderful Associates Members and Parade Princesses (Carla, 10 & Ani, 8), Gary & Judy Baker grand-daughters. It sounds like they enjoyed the Tygh Valley campout. I certainly hope they get to attend more events. Winning Lady Rider Flat Track Well, the update on the standings for American Flat track Singles has Shayna Texter in Second Place, with one more race this season, at Southern California Half Mile. Her second place position stems from her failing to qualify for 4 races. For some reason she just doesn t do well on TT tracks. But even after missing out on points in 4 races, she is still in second place, just 17 points back. Shayna finished fourth at the last race of the season at So Cal. (Perris). So she slid to a final third place in the standings for 2017, with 5 wins. Chapter Visits, etc. So, this month I attended: October 1: The Hood River breakfast. October 8: Mary and Steve are in town. We opted for relaxing and some shopping instead of the North Coast Diner Ride at Camp 18. October 21: So very wet day. I actually did a double header today, first to Vancouver for the breakfast. Mary & Steve went with me, and Derald, Arlys and Paul joined us, for a total of 6. Then we headed back south, dropped Steve off at my place, and Mary & I went on the Planning Meeting. Annual Planning Meeting: We had a good Oregon Annual Meeting at Wandering Spirit RV Park. We had 26 attending. Great pot luck feed! At this point, we do not have a final schedule for 2018 rides & rallies, only a draft. Ben will coordinated with the other State Reps, and Kevin, International Rep. to coordinate and finalize the schedule. Financial Report: We have $2,055 in the checking account, and $5.00 in the savings account (required to have the checking). No big expenses anticipate for remainder of this year or for We may need to make adjustments for mailing of the newsletter. To reduce mailing costs I am going to try printing two-sided, and also probably black & white. The multi-page color printing definitely uses a lot of ink. And the multi-pages has been taking 2-3 stamps. My intent is to not increase the cost to members. Ben reported membership for Oregon is about the same as last year. We lost a few, but gained a few. The current Oregon Roster shows we have 143 members. Kevin s International Questions: We voted on the two questions sent by Kevin: Should we drop the Over 40 provisions in our By- Laws? Response is unanimous support for the change. Should we recreate (we had one several years ago, now outdated) an International Directory of members, addresses, phones numbers, and emergency support capabilities (pick-up, trailer, tools, etc.)? The directory would be distributed to all members. Response is unanimous support for a new directory. Thanks to Gary Miller and Lyn McCabe for hosting the Fall Campout! Safety Reminder As always, Stay Vigilant and Safe!!! Winterization: It probably time to winterize your bike. This generally at a minimum entails a good cleaning, oil & filter change, and fuel stabilizer. 4

5 Sparkplug Reminder It would really be nice to hear from a few other members now and then. You do not have to be a local Rep to submit something. Let us know what you are doing For all newsletter information, or Web postings, please submit to David by the 20 th of each month. Oregon Photos David has a request for photos of Oregon places and scenery for the cover of the newsletter. If you have some good photos, please send them to David. David s contact info is: UmciNewsWash@gmail.com SparkPlugEditor@gmail.com If you prefer to send pictures via the US Mail, here s his address: David Fitzgerald 9522 NE 140th St. Kirkland, WA September 30 (5 th Saturday): We didn t plan ahead, so nothing scheduled for this 5 th Saturday. These 5 th weekend this really mess-up my scheduling, especially if I don t pay attention to when they occur. October 1: A bit wet this morning, so CZ and I headed for Hood River (Mid-Columbia breakfast) in my newly acquired pick-up (2015 GMC 1500). This was a good opportunity to check out the highway mileage. I ve been getting 18 mpg average commuting to work, and was pleased to see 25.7 for the round trip. We had 6 attending this morning, with Klickitat John being the sole rider. After eats, we drove on over to The Dalles, to checkout Joanne Daniel s new retaining wall, and also Dennis and Bernice s new pop-up camper. On our return run, we took Hwy 35 back and stopped and got some apples in Parkdale, then back over Mt. Hood. October 7: A bit wet this morning also, so I drove to the Wichita Grill for the South Metro breakfast. We had 11 attending this morning. By the way, if you did not know, you can see all the Newsletters on the orumci.weebly.com October 2017 Metro South (Milwaukie & Oregon City) News Ben Altman September 23: It was a pretty nice and dry morning after a lot of rain, but to get the bike out, I had to move the truck, and for some reason, all the street parking was full this morning. So, rather than doing a lot of shuffling, I just drove to the Portland breakfast at Elmer s. Derald Johnson and Paul Brown did ride, however. We had 7 attending this morning, with CZ, Julia, Sue and Dale completing the roster. Dale intended to ride, but apparently his son had stored his big heavy gun safe behind the bike. I suspect that will be corrected, when Dale gets home. Since it was such a nice day, CZ & I decided to take a ride for lunch. We rode down to Aumsville, on a fairly indirect route, which is not usual, when following CZ. After lunch we wondered back rode through Stayton, Lyons, Mahama, and over the hill to Silverton, and back home, about a 110 round trip. At 65 degrees, the weather was perfect! October 14: A bit chilly this 37 degrees, even had frost on the windshield. So obviously caged it to the Wichita Grill. Mary & Steve went with me. We had 13 attending. No 50/50 this morning. October 21: Wet soggy morning. We had 6 attending the Vancouver breakfast. Wow, it s our annual planning meeting weekend already, so on down to the Wandering Spirit RV Park. Next up is the Portland breakfast at Elmer s... Well, it s time to send my reports to David again. Actually Sir David gave me an extra day, to I good report in the Planning Meeting 5

6 South Region Hi Friends: Not much new down here. We still do our Wed. Lunch ride. Saw Bob Sangren Wed. in Elkton. He was planning on doing the 200 Mile loop on his trike. I went camping with Guns again and a Deer tag. Had a great time visiting with old Friends I've known sense I was 14. Good memories. Snow was 4 to 5 foot deep in my area last winter. Apparently much of the heard died. We got a glimps of a Buck but he out snookered us. There were 4 50/50 winners of Duane Huff, Lynda Mason, Max Bowman, and Dan McKee. I'm Leaving early in the Morning for the PLANNING MEET- ING. Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Zack Hoffman. I came back early from hunting in time for the October Meeting. We Decided to Start the Meeting at 9:15AM for the winter. You can come early and eat or come for the meeting and then eat. 6
