International Reps Rant Hi Again! I hope that this note finds everyone in great spirits and good health. I have been super busy since I ve taken over the International Rep s position and now appreciate what a looming task it is and applaud those that have done it before me. I m starting to receive the surveys I sent out, inquiring about the over 40 clause, whether or not to keep that in our bylaws or eliminate it. The other thing I wanted to determine was, if everyone wanted an updated list of members in each state. While I have received some surveys back, there are a lot that have not been returned to me, especially the member list material that needs to be done pretty soon. The list is going to be something that we give to each member so when going through a state where we have a club it will list that state s member phone and addresses so if you had trouble on a ride you could possibly reach out and touch one of your fellow UMCI ers to get a little help or directions on where to go to get some help. (How do you like that long sentence Mary lol) Just a private joke everyone. So please get them to your area reps so we can get this done. Also, one of my tasks that I have been working on is getting our next International Rally set up. Everyone wanted to go to Montana because we have never had an International there. I have found a place that I think will work so I am going to pursue the possibility of holding it there. I have received input from all of the State and Provincial Reps they felt we could make it work. If you would like to go on their website and look it over all comments are welcome. Their location is Glacier Peaks RV Park (Park Map) (Geo Location). I think it s going to be a great spot, some terrific rides around there as well. I will have this finalized and post it as soon as I have all the details worked out. The logistics of doing a rally where we have nobody there to set it up is a big undertaking. But I feel we can do it with all of your help and support. Thanks to all for now. Please talk about the club as much as possible and we will grow. Word of mouth is the best thing we can do. Happy Holidays Kevin and Kevi 4
State Reps Rant I hope the Wash reaches you before Thanksgiving! My hope is that you have a good one and you re surrounded by Love from all your family and friends. At the Washington State Level not much has been going on. I have not had time to visit each area and have breakfast, but for sure that is on my list. I spoke with Irene from the Seattle area and she said things were going well and that their breakfast meeting was being well attended. Still a few people riding in on their bikes as well, that s a good thing. I admire those people that even ride a motorcycle in that area, too many nuts in the 4 wheel rigs that scare me. Everyone I hope has winterized their bikes and you re ready for the holidays, they are upon us for sure. How time flies!! I am finalizing some of the details that need to be done for the State Rally. Should have them done by the first of December. I think we have communicated the dates and location in plenty of time to get a good participation. For now, not much to report, just want to take a second to thank the area reps that take their time out of there week to keep UMCI going. It is a thankless job, but you all do a great job at it. And believe me when I say or refer to it as thankless, it only seems that way. Our members do appreciate your efforts, just don t say it very often, but I feel that they do really appreciate and understand the amount of work that goes into being a rep. Again Happy Holiday s from Kevi and I and we will see you soon. Thanks Kevin and Kevi. 5
Columbia Basin News Hi to all and I hope you have a very happy Thanksgiving, and got to spend it with your family around you. We indeed have a lot to be thankful for in this country that we call our home. Our group had our breakfast meeting Sunday the 12 th at Bob s in Moses Lake. And for this time of year it was a pretty fair turnout, although there were no bikes in the parking lot, it was only a little over 32 when we got out of the meeting. Most of discussion was about our Christmas party, slash, gift exchange which will be held at the rec hall at Max, Mel and Kay s mobile park. It is a great place to have a party and it is usually one of our largest turnouts. We also discussed the State rally in Winthrop, and what we wanted to set up there, should be a fun spot to have our rally, I think. There was not a whole lot more to discuss except health issues seems to be a topic at each meeting anymore we are getting older. All are welcome to the Christmas party. Lots to eat, just bring a gift to exchange and mark it man or woman not to spend over $15.00 if you can. Standard gift exchange rules apply. The location is 4815 Air Way Drive N.E. Moses Lake Washington. For now, have a great holiday season and I hope that you all get to really enjoy your families. Kevin and Kevi 6
Inland Northwest News Well, I guess since it's official and I'm the cub reporter, and our breakfast meeting was this morning, I'd better get this written down while it's still breaking news... Not what one would call a large crowd this morning and no bikes whatever in the parking lot. But it was threatening snow and snowing a bit as we were leaving. Charlie and John co-chaired the meeting. Most of the discussion centered around ideas for a rally site in Montana as requested by WA Rep Kevin in the last edition of the WASH. Many possible locations were mentioned and it was decided we'd contact our friends from Libby, MT, Ralph and Peggy and ask for their recommendation. Of course we didn't go so far as to decide just who would take care of this... After a rather brief meeting, Joyce drew John's ticket as the winner of the lucrative $12 jackpot in the 50/50 and we said our good byes shortly after to go our separate ways... A rather typical dreary November early winter day, it was. Big snow storm in the forecast for tomorrow. Me thinks the riding season just might be over. -Tom Wells 7
Four Trip Planning Resources for Touring Success By Derek Roberts Things to know before you go With motorcycle season in full effect, it s time to get the bike out of the garage, the gear loaded up, and hit the road. Offering up maybe the world s best touring topography, the Pacific Northwest is a scenic wonderland, like no other place on earth. It begs to be ridden. This year, dedicate yourself to making the most out of each trip by not wasting a single hour of daylight. A little research can go a long ways and these 4 websites can help put you in prime position to pack on the miles and enjoy every minute of it. 1. Weather - A no brainer. This isn t just hopping in the family 4x4 for a ride down to Crater Lake. In addition to rain and thunderstorms, riders need to be keenly aware of both temperature conditions and the effects of topography on weather along any planned routes. A 500 mile day in the Pacific Northwest can take you through multiple climate zones and you might just find yourself exiting a nice, pleasant, afternoon heading up a mountain pass and into thunderstorms, or even hail on the downhill side. The National Weather Service's new Enhanced Digital Display (in allows users to enter their destination and get specific weather updates for their planned route. A great first and last step before rolling out. 2. Road Conditions - The super slab has its moments, but let's face it...that s the last place most of us want to ride. Motorcycling is about exploration and whether you re hunting for that gnarly dirt track or searching for the perfect stretch of twisties, that means heading for the mountains. Keep in mind, though, that winter time can wreak havoc on some of the region's more spectacular riding areas in the form of snow build up, flooding, washouts and frequent summertime road closures. A few weeks of sunny mid-summer weather may lull you into a false sense of security leaving you and your trip literally dead ended. Oh and speaking of sunny, mid-summer weather don t forget the forest fires.looking at you, Idaho. 8
Four Trip Planning Resources for Touring Success, continued Campsite Availability - Summertime, of course, is a great season for more than just motorcycling and when heading out to some of the country s more popular recreational areas, it s important to plan ahead. If you re relying on camping near town for easy access to fuel and restaurants or are anticipating pitching your tent in a campground with features like power and water, take note that these areas can book up weeks in advance (especially around holidays). After a long day of hot, summer riding, finding yourself low on fuel, food and with no place to camp, is certifiably miserable. Before you head out, do a little research and make sure that there are plenty of spaces to pitch your tent along the way. 4. Motorcycle Recalls - When you buy a new or used motorcycle, the government registration process automatically enters owners into a database that vehicle manufacturers, in conjunction with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, can access to update title holders with newly-issued recalls. Of course, if you weren t the first to roll the bike off of the showroom floor then you might be missing out on important safety or mechanical updates which could derail your trip. Often times, recalls are simple, but it s not unheard of for major brands (and models) to have problems with transmissions, fuel lines or brakes. Take a quick second to run your VIN number a few weeks prior to your trip and ensure that everything is mechanically sound before your departure. 9
