September 2017 Rep s Rambling Coos Bay Oregon State Rally A BIG THANKS to Chris & Eva Williams for hosting the Oregon State Rally this year as part of their annual Coos Bay Rally, August They did pancakes, eggs and fruit for breakfast each day, excellent! I had a great ride down Thursday, perfect weather about 65 degrees all the way. Friday morning it was a bit chilly at 44, but it warmed up by 10:00, and the high was 82 on Saturday. Chris lead us on a ride down to Port Orford, where we had lunch at the Crazy Norwegian. Very good food. On the return run, we did a short run up to a view point above Langlois. There was a bit of smoke in the air, but still a pretty good view of the ocean. Carol Williams brought Virgil over for the afternoon on Friday, they stayed for the hot dog feed. There were a lot of big smiles from Virgil. For the Saturday diner, we had pulled-pork sandwiches, with cold-slaw, very tasty!!! Some folks won 50/50s, but not me, so it didn t count. I headed out early Sunday morning to beat the projected valley heat. It was a cool 52 when I left camp. Had breakfast in Reedsport, then on in to I-5 on 38. I got home about noonish, and it was just turning 85 degrees, so did good on beating the heat. Later that afternoon it got up to 92. Despite the low turn-out, only about 38 campers (majority from Idaho), and maybe 45 total counting drop-ins, I believe everyone had a good time. I realize there are schedule conflicts, and of course health issue which stop people from participating. But I was a bit disappointed with the really low showing from Oregon, but thanks to Idaho, we had more than 5 camping. Again, thanks to Chris & Eva, for hosting and thanks to everyone who chipped-in to assist. Good Rally. OH, and special Blessing for Eva, who lost her mother the Monday before the Rally. Tygh Valley After Coos Bay, I came home for 3 days, did laundry and repacked, then headed out for Tygh Valley on Wednesday. A Special Thanks to CZ for being my trusty U-Haul guy, hauling all the stuff over. Being back-to-back with Coos Bay, I figured we would be down on attendance. We had 20 camping on-site, CZ Hotelled it and we had 6 drop-ins. You may recall, we moved the Rally from the 4 th of July to Labor Day to get out of the 108 degree weather. This year it was only 98, so I guess that is an improvement. At least it was better than last year, when it was 65 degrees and windy. This year we also had to contend with a bit of smoke from fires, especially Saturday and Sunday. The Wamic Fire District put on their Labor Day breakfast fund raiser again. Great food! And, this year we were asked to participate in their Labor Day Parade, so we did. If you know Wamic, there is really only one street, Hwy 48, so that is where the parade took place. Even though the parade route is only a few blocks long, it took forever.. It went so slow, we shut off the engines and just coasted down the hill. 3
Tygh Valley (continued) It seems that the local report & parade MC announces every group as they pass by. While it took a long time, I believe it was good to get UMCI announced publicly. date that isn t back-to- back with Coos Bay or another rally. I know that makes it difficult for some folks. So we will see what we can do about that Health & Welfare Update Jonnie Billings is not doing very well. She has stage 3 cancer and the doctors don t believe she is strong enough to do any kind of treatment. So please send your thoughts and prayers to the Billings!!! William Aarnio William had some problems with blood clots and spent time in the hospital being treated with blood thinners. He is home now, but has to go back for a biopsy for a mass in his lungs once he has recovered strength from all the prior treatment. Again, please send your thoughts and prayers for William. Lyn Macabe Lyn seems to be recovering well from her second hip replacement. Get well soon Lyn!!! Winning Lady Rider Flat Track I have been watching the American Flat track races lately. It has been several years since I watched any flat track. Actually, the last race I went to was at Castle Rock, before St. Helens blew. So all the riders are new to me, but still fun to watch-um sliding sideways around the corners. For all our lady riders and members, you may be pleased to know that halfway through the season this year, the points leader in the 450 Singles Division is Shayna Texter, who holds a 32 point lead. Shayna who is 26 years young, 5 foot tall and a real heavy weight at 95 lbs. Despite her small stature she is taking on the guys, with 4 wins and several top 5 runs on her #52 Honda. On the podium for her 4 th win this year, she only stood to the shoulders of her 2 nd and 3 rd place competitors. She has run some 750 Twin races, but seems to have a bit of trouble getting traction, being so light. But her last race she did finish in the top 10. The top two 750 Twin riders are both running Indians. Gary & Judy Baker brought their grand-daughters (Carla, 10 & Ani, 8), they were also at Coos Bay. Without hesitation, I have to say, it was delightful having them at both rallies! Oh, and I must mention, that Clara is our youngest riding Associate Member, she rides a 50 cc Honda. She also did some practicing on grandmas Trike around the fairgrounds. Sturgis For the first time in 25 years, the 750 twins ran a TT race at no less than the Buffalo Chip. Cool track, designed by Kenny Carr, with left and right turns and a jump. A Kawi won, second to an Indian, and for the first time this year, Harley rider made the Podium. September has been too bad, but for next year, I am going to do some schedule checking to see if I can find a good 4
Wamic Parade
Chapter Visits I made it down to Lebanon for their breakfast. Tygh Valley conflicted with the Hood River Breakfast, but we had great food at the Wamic Community Center, fund raiser for the Fire Department. We also participated in their Labor Day Parade. This is the first parade I did in neutral with the engine off, as we very slowly coasted down the hill on the one main street in Wamic. I heard one observe r comment, gee, those bikes are really quiet! End of Summer Gee golly, its September, and the 21 st marks the end of summer. While we had many hot dry days, it was really a pretty short riding season this year, with all the early rain. The forecast for next week (9-18) is rain, which is sad, but much needed. Hopefully, unlike last year, we will still have some good riding days into October Sparkplug Reminder It would really be nice to hear from a few other members now and then. You do not have to be a local Rep to submit something. Let us know what you are doing For all newsletter information, or Web postings, please submit to David by the 20 th of each month. David s contact info is: UmciNewsWash@gmail.com SparkPlugEditor@gmail.com By the way, if you did not know, you can see all the Newsletters on the orumci.weebly.com International News Kevin Besel, International Rep has sent out a questionnaire, see herein (Page 10), regarding the over 40 clause in our By-Laws. He is also requesting feedback about providing a roster of membership. Safety Reminder Safe habits If you are like me, I prefer to use engine compression for slowing down, saving wear on the brakes. While this practice gives your brakes longer life, it is important to remember that under compression, there is no brake light to warn the driver behind you that you are slowing down. So, I apply just of touch of front brake, just enough lever to activate the brake light. I feel it is important and a key part of defensive driving to always remember to consider providing other drivers with appropriate information about what you are doing. The same goes for properly using turn signals when changing lanes or making turns. As we all know, many motorists do not always look for or see motorcycle. The relatively thin profile, as compared to a car, obviously reduces visibility. I always assume that no one sees me, and that it is my responsibility to see other and help them see me. Also consider adding additional safety lights, to add to the visibility of your bike. I have added side lights front and rear, and also added low mounted driving lights up front. And, make sure your headlight is bright enough to show-up on sunning days. If your low beam is not very bright, consider running with your hi-brights on. As always, Stay Vigilant and Safe!!! Please respond. You can send your response to me or directly to Kevin. I will also take a vote on the issues at our Planning Meeting. August 2017 Metro South (Milwaukie & Oregon City) News Ben Altman September 9: Perfect morning, 63 degrees, cloudy but dry. So I Winged it over to Oregon City for the Wichita Grill breakfast. This morning there were 13 attending. It s always good to see everyone, especially since I missed the last two Metro Area breakfast, cause I was at Coos Bay and Tygh Valley. We did a 50/50 this morning, and the winners were Ben (John Pursley s grandson) and Derald Johnson. September 16: It was warmer than I expected this morning, at 55 degrees, and dry. CZ came by and we rode up to Vancouver for the breakfast. Derald Johnson and Paul Brown were there, so it was just the 4 of us. Good food and conversation, and nice ride home. Short report this month as I missed two local events for Coos Bay and Tygh Valley. 6
South Region Friends, Romans, and Fellow Motorcyclist: Lend me your ears. September 18, 2017 I always wanted to say that. Now to the News, it is, it was, and it has been SMOKEY! Saturday Portland had the worst air quality in the USA. Roseburg was Second in the Nation. I must be getting old, Just couldn't muster up the want to go camping. Evernden and I rode over for the day to Myrtle Point and had a Great time visiting Friends. Maybe next year, The smoke around Roseburg has really been depressing. Tygh Valley, was on my list, I wanted to go to. However the roads I prefer to ride were closed weather and smoke just didn't light my Fire, so to speak. I've made three day trips to the coast for fresh air. One on the KLR, and on the Connie, and another on the Trike with Friends where we met another friend. The other friend was camping and crabbing and he provided us with a GREAT CRAB FEED, Fresh caught CRAB is AWESOME. On the ride to the Crab Feed there were four of us. My mind wonders some times, I added up our age and divided by 4 and come up with 73+. We had a Spirited ride over and back, trying not to hold up traffic. We exceeded our "Average Age" a couple of times when passing. But didn't exceed Dons age. Don Evernden will be 86 tomorrow 9/19. We had a new face at our Monthly Meeting, Paul Thompson. The meeting room was almost full with 26 or 27. GOOD FOOD AND GOOD FRIENDS makes a great day. Several Motorcycles graced to parking lot. We had 50/50 with 4 winners who won $20 each Ami Vike, Max Bowman, Gary Baker, and Lyn McCabe. She and Gary Miller also won the PRIVILEGE, of hosting the October Meeting. I'm going to head East, to hunt the willy Mule Deer. I more than likely will return with the title of VEGETARIAN. VEGETARIAN= Native America word for POOR HUNTER. It might be a Great time to visit, sense I won't be there. Grants Pass is well and active, Rick is working hard and the Chapter is doing well. They ride when the smoke lifts enough to see the road. Keep Lance in your Prayers. Be Blessed and Be SAFE! Zack Hoffman 7
