Newsletter Editor Notes Linda Yelich Hi guys summertime is here everyone is anxious to put miles under their belt drive safely and enjoy the summer. We have several fun things coming up and the first is the bug run July 8 th leaving from Al s corner of the world at #11 Jenkins Dr. North end of Red Deer off Taylor Drive on Jewel St. to the west a half block and left into the complex! See you there 9 AM. Hoping for a beautiful day. If you haven t confirmed call asap so he knows how many noses to count. We ve had a couple breakfasts at A&W had 14 or so each time. Glenda has a couple pics for you that follow this. Father s Day several of us went to the Moose Hall to participate in their fare. I am taking out the license renewal info chart I think you all know your renewal months by now. It has been a year since they left us to our own devices so hope you re all ok with that. There will be no Chapter meeting in July. See you along the way until the next meeting end of August.

Chapter Director Notes: Well the month of June is just about in the books. Summer is finally here and the riding season is now in full swing. I am sure that all of you have some sort of plans that will take you to a lot of different places in this beautiful country of ours. Terry and Glenda just got back from a week in British Columbia. So far, we have not taken a special trip but enjoy riding with the Chapter on our Sunday rides. Speaking of Sunday rides, we joined Chapters AB-B and AB-A for a joint ride to Pine Lake for lunch at the golf course. We left Red Deer (Chapter C ) to meet AB-B at Ponoka. Some how we missed the Edmonton Chapter in Ponoka so travelled back to Pine Lake by ourselves. We joined the others already there for some fellowship and great food. It was a really great day of riding. On July the 8th at 9:00, Al Ingles will be hosting a bug run. Directions will be in the news letter. Come one - come all - for a great time and great food. Ride some nice country. See you all there to splatter a bunch of bugs all over your bike. Sounds nice doesn't. Have a wonderful summer and keep riding safe. CHAPTER DIRECTORS WAYNE AND LINDA

Hi all, We had such a great get together at Pine Lake, it inspired me to write the attached article that I would like you to include in your chapter newsletter. We will be running it in our Buzzword and will also forward it to Calgary and Lethbridge chapters. I have included a pdf and a word document for your convenience. In addition to the article, I have also attached a pdf of the form we use for the poker run players for Tom s Poker run. We would love it if some of your members would like to participate in this ride for a great cause on August 12. We charge $5 for each hand and most of our members buy $20 worth per couple. Print these off with a colour printer and cut into individual score sheets. We draw the first card at breakfast and also sell hands at our breakfast gathering to those who attend but can t come on the ride. Then they can have someone riding to look after their hands for them. We usually take two or three decks of cards and a few pencils along for our stops along the way. I will forward more details before the ride begins. Thanks Wally Bentt Cell: Assistant Chapter Director/Ride Coordinator GWRRA Chapter AB-B ridecoord@gwrra.ca Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Friends are the raisins and chocolate chips in the cookie of life

Inter<>Chapter<>Connections. Life is full of changes. Change is usually good. Life would be extremely boring if we all did the same old thing, all the time. But some changes don't always work the way we like. One of those changes over the years has been the dwindling of our inter-chapter connections. Long time members will recall events like the Whitecourt Breakfasts, the Barrhead Bug Runs, the Edmonton Thrills and Skills, the Innisfail Observation Rides or the Can-Mont Food Fests. Add to these the District, Regional and Wing Ding Rallies among others. These were all great get-togethers of members from across our Province and Region. Who of you remembers the constant stealing of Chapter plaques that happened. Chapter AB-B even lost our plaque and a huge stuffed bee to the Prince George Chapter of all places. This inter-chapter connection has dwindled down over the past decade to a couple of small events. I believe, part of this decline is due to changes in our personal lives. We are busy with families and other interests. We are doing less camp-outs than we used to do, and part of the problem has been a lack of a district structure, compounded by other organizational changes. So what do we do to get inter-chapter activities back? We have to plan for these together. As the ride coordinator for Chapter AB-B, I have tried to get some inter-chapter rides planned by circulating our ride schedule to the other chapters, however this shouldn't be a one way street coming from one chapter. We need to get ride coordinators and chapter staffs together to plan joint rides and events. In the distant past, we would present our tentative ride schedules at our fall District meetings. To start this off, I would encourage all chapters to prepare a tentative ride schedule before Christmas. Then circulate these between chapters to see which rides we can work together on. By spring we should have a few rides we can do together and promote these to our members. I was very pleased with the super turnout we had at Pine Lake on June 24. It was only for a couple of hours, however the overwhelming sentiment was that we should do this kind of thing more often. What a beautiful day to do this! It was great to meet Bruce Buckley for a first time. It was also fun chatting with others we had never met, and renewing ties with Milt Sorensen, Terry Johnson and others. A few business cards were swapped as well. Let's keep this inter-chapter thing happening! One other event on the AB-B calendar that we would love you to join us on, is the upcoming Tom's Poker Run for STARS. For those who don't know, our Chapter Director in 2000/2001 was Tom Hodgson, a big supporter of STARS. He was in a motorcycle accident in Chicago in August 2001 and was air-lifted to hospital by chopper where he later died. We will be running the 17th annual Tom s Poker Run on August 12. If each chapter could run a poker run with the last card drawn at a common end point, we could have a grand winner and pool the proceeds for this very worthwhile cause. I suggest the Innisfail Legion would be a good terminal point for this ride. I will send our route map to each chapter at a later date to see if we can have at least one other coordinated event this season. Wally Bentt ACD/Ride Coordinator Chapter AB-

VIGNETTES My 1998 and Anticipated Trip to Atlantic District Rally in St. John s: In March of 1998 I was diagnosed with cancer. My thinking at the time was life was coming to an end. Before surgery, I wanted to make one last motorcycle trip across Canada. I started planning THE trip for July and realized I did not have enough time. My eldest son said he and my 12 year old granddaughter (she has 3 children now) would ride my 1994 GL 1500 to Halifax for me. I flew down later and we spent a few days together touring with a rental car. A week was spent in Nova Scotia area then off to N/L by ferry. On the ferry there were about 20 Gold Wings going my same way! As we talked they told me they were going to the Atlantic District Rally in Gander for GWRRA. At that time I had not heard of GWRRA so decided to join the group to Gander and participate. I joined at the Rally so have a 20 year membership. We spent 10 days touring N/L to Gros Morne National Park and North to L Anse Aux Meadows (where the Vikings landed). I also took the ferry to Labrador and covered the few paved roads they have for a few days. I rode back to Alberta, had surgery and am still riding 20 years later! The Atlantic Rally is in St. John s this year and we will travel by plane to participate for Will give an update on 2018 Rally in future newsletter. 8 Hello to all Prairies District members, Well here we are, halfway thru the year and we ve already had some ARC and MFA courses in Calgary, Saskatoon and Edmonton with the plan of a TRC in Calgary later this year. If you couldn t attend one of the courses or would like to have one in your area, let us know and we will try to plan them for your area. Within our District we have ARC, TRC, TC, MFA & ITCP instructors eager to help you with your riding skills, first aid and GWRRA education. If you are interested in one of the courses or want to have a seminar Day, visit the District webpage and fill out the form found under the Education link. There have been a number of weekend rides and more to come. These rides and other events can be found on the District webpage calendar. We had our first Inter-Chapter ride to Pine Lake, AB with members from AB- B, AB-C and AB-A gathering together and some for the first time. That s the spirit and is what GWRRA is all about, meeting old friends and new ones that have a common interest in riding 2, 3 or 4 wheels. It doesn t matter how many people attend as long as everyone is having fun. Now we need to meet somewhere in the middle of the three Prairie Provinces for an Inter-Province gathering. If you are planning on attending Wing Ding 40 in Knoxville, Tennessee August 28 th September 1 st, we are looking for some volunteers to help out for a couple hours. Whether you re a new member or a long serving member, this is a great way to get involved with the organization and be recognized by others, and of course, To Have Fun. Let us know and we will pass your name forward to the organization committee. Remember to check the District webpage and please send us some photos that you would like to see on the webpage as these pictures will be seen by all including future members. Until next month, Gary and Susan Premech Prairies District Directors

From the Desk of the District Ride Educator Good day Everyone: Its good to have the White Stuff behind us and now we can get the Bike out and start putting plans together for the many adventures that we have been thinking about during the Winter. The Bike has been Tuned up and is ready to go. How about the Rider and the Co-Rider? Co-Riders, Do you know your responsibilities during the Ride? Do you know what to do on a Ride if something happens to your Driver? By taking a Co-Rider Course / 2 up Course you will learn how to cope with these and other types of situations. Have you taken a First Aid Course recently? Talking to a few Members about this the common reply is yes I took one about 5 or 6 years ago or longer, that s all I need or we have a Ambulance close by. That is fine if you re at home. What if you re at the Lake with Family Members or on a Bike Trip and an Emergency happens. Would you know what to do? 12 years ago we were on a Chapter Ride in a desolate location and had a Emergency happen. It took First Responders 45 minutes to get to the scene and another 1 Hr. 45 Min. for the Ambulance to arrive. We were fortunate that many on the Ride had taken a First Aid Course and looked after the patient until arrival of the Air Ambulance. Riders have you taken a Riding Course such as a ARC Trike Course Trailer Course to keep your skills current? Because of our Climate we are forced to park our Bikes for up to 6 Months because of the Cold Winter Weather. Being off the Bike for that length of time our skills deteriorate. Unless we practice by taking a Riding Course we are Riding by the seat of our pants, barely in control during the ride. By taking Riding Courses regularly we become a skilled and competent Rider, we become the Life Line for our Co-Rider and everyone comes back from a Ride safe and sound. Have a safe and wonderful Summer ALEX MIDDLETON CANADIAN PRAIRIES DISTRICT EDUCATOR
