Much appreciation once again goes out to our wonderful hosts Bill & Pat Jorgenson. Did you know Bill & Pat have been doing this since 2012!! Details: Saturday September 15th Meet at Bill and Pats between 9:40 and 10:00 Vests will be distributed Highway Cleanup Lunch to follow at Bill & Pats Newsletter Editor Notes Well hello everybody! Our chapter AB-C has had a great 2018 summer and it's not over yet! The transition from having breakfasts at Smitty's to A&W has worked well, you spoke so it changed. Great to see some new faces and the old ones aren't too bad either! The reasonably priced breakfast menu is quite adequate but more importantly the "fellowship" is priceless - that's the Goldwing way. Preplanned suggested routes for Sunday rides are also new with our ride coordinator busily mapping out the possibilities. Al & Caryl's bug run was loads of fun and very well planned. The Sunday rides are just as enjoyable - no road is too long when you have good company. Don't forget to send me your articles, I'd love to add them to the newsletter. An , phone call or just chicken scratch on an A&W napkin, it doesn't matter to me. Where have you been this summer, do you have any anecdotes old or new? As the saying goes "everyone has a story", let's put it in our Wing Word! Miles of Smiles. Glenda gheidt1@shaw.ca Wing Word 2

3 Directors Message Here I sit at quarter after six in the morning writing this news update because we are heading out camping this morning. We had our first fall meeting last night 26 members present. I am sure that we all had a very good summer and managed to get a lot of riding in. I know that we did and according to stats, we were only rained out once. Not bad at all. Terry and Glenda Heidt have stepped up to take over the positions of Assistant Chapter Directors. This was a very much needed position to fill and we are very grateful for their help and it was much needed. Thank you both again. Also to report Glenda is now the new newsletter person and looks forward to your articles. Welcome back Glenda. Terry has filled the position of Ride Coordinator. This position was requested by the District. We would also like to thank Linda Yelich for her dedicated time doing the newsletter for the past 2 years. Highway cleanup is slated for Sept 15 weather permitting. Meet at the Jorgensen's on the morning of the 15 between 9:40 and 10:00 am. Vests, bags, and gloves will be supplied. Thank you to Terry Johnson for volunteering to bring the needed supplies from Alberta Transportation. There was a very good showing of hands wanting to go to the Moose Jaw rally in August of 2019 on the This is not cast in stone as of yet. All depends on the support of the chapter members. If you would like to go send me a or a phone call at wrenfert@xplornet.ca or call Gareth and Sheryl Philip have taken on the job of hosting the 2019 bug run, date to be announced. There will also be a Road Captain course coming up, the decision to hold it this fall or early spring is still to be determined - we had a show of hands of 8 interested. Please let me or Terry H. know if you would like to add your name. That's all I can think of for now and Glenda will probably fill in the blanks that I have forgotten. Wayne & Linda Chapter Directors Other items from the Aug 27th chapter gathering. Wednesday night ice cream run - start time standardized to 6:30pm effective immediately. Sunday rides - discussed some of the fun rides listed in GWRRA handbook, potential ladies rides, lunch or supper rides, possible windup lunch ride, reviewed Aug rides, upcoming Sept rides & ride length. Yarmouth NS rally - Al & Caryl attended the NFLD rally this year & reported that next year's rally to be hosted by Yarmouth on the August long weekend some interest within Chapter to attend. Calendars - Sunday rides will not be added into next calendar edition, but will still contain member bike pictures, birthdays, holidays, gathering dates, ice cream rides. Rockers - Dennis still has some left over Region J rockers for vests if anyone would like one these "collector editions" as we are no longer Region J - please let Dennis know. Wing Word 3

4 Glenn's Page Cartoons & Chuckles from the archives of Glenn Turple! Adventures of Little Larry Little Larry attended a horse auction with his father. He watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse's legs and rump, and chest. After a few minutes, Larry asked, 'Dad, why are you doing that?" His father replied, "Because when I'm buying horses, I have to make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy". Larry, looking worried, said, "Dad, I think the UPS guy wants to buy mom.." Adventures of Paddy Paddy was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn't find a parking place. Looking up to heaven he said, "Lord take pity on me. If you find me a parking place I will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of me life and give up me Irish Whiskey"! Miraculously, a parking place appeared. Paddy looked up again and said, "Never mind, I found one". Wing Word 4

5 Ride Coordinator Report - August rides Aug. 5th it was determined that Ukrainian Village might be a tad busy on the long weekend so 7 riders took a quieter ride through Strachan, Rocky Mtn House and Pigeon Lake led by Milt. Aug. 12th we planned to meet with the Edmonton chapter 'Ride for STARS' poker run but weather did not cooperate and the ride was cancelled. We were still able to raise $100 at breakfast. Thanks to Wayne Renfert for donating his winnings back to STARS. AB-B also had Eloise P. donate winnings back, they raised $220. Aug. 18th several members were led by 'Road General' Glenn Turple on the Ride to Reynolds. Aug. 19th the Devonian Gardens ride was also cancelled and instead we had 7 riders led by Terry J take a route west through Eckville to Rimbey for ice cream. Aug. 26th the COY BBQ was cancelled and a ride to Edberg, Meeting Creek & Stettler took place instead. Upcoming rides - Sept 2nd meet chapter AB-B Edmonton at Dickson Dam for a picnic, with some members from AB-A Calgary possibly attending, Sept 9th is scheduled as a ride in the Buck Lake area. The Ride Coordinator position is an opportunity to build a flexible ride schedule that is hopefully a good mix of member suggestions, coordinated rides with other chapters, repeats of previously successful rides & fun activities. Our central Alberta location allows a mix of rides into foothills, mountains, canola in full yellow bloom, ripening wheat & barley, the occasional cornfield, pastureland, hayland, wooded areas & badlands. A huge thank you to our members who step forward to lead and tail gun these rides. Considerations for a successful ride is a route that will incorporate adequate gas & comfort breaks, lunch or picnic locations & sightseeing opportunities. Whenever possible the Ride Coordinator will prepare a route map so members know up front what each ride will entail. Our Sunday rides on average range from km. So far in July/Aug four Sunday rides have been under 260 km. We hope that any member that feels a designated ride is too long will still come along and ride as far as they are comfortable. Your feedback is always welcome on what "is or isn't" working with our rides so that we can maintain and increase the number of riders that come out to enjoy each event. Heck we'll even tell you which direction we're going to turn next! (Please check our chapter web page - I'll try to keep Milt posted of updates to the ride schedule) Ride Safe Terry Heidt Did you hear about the motorcycle repair shop that just opened up? It comes highly "wreck-a-mended"!!! Wing Word 5

6 "New" Assistant Chapter Directors After being active GWRRA members for 10 years, Terry & Glenda have volunteered to occupy "bronze medal" chairs at the front of the room as Assistant Chapter Directors, supporting Wayne & Linda who will be approaching their 6th year as Directors. (Big thanks to them!) We hope to continue snowbird activities that may take us out of the area for a portion of the winter, but look forward to sharing some of the responsibilities that are a result of the positive changes to GWRRA since January Our chapter is a great little chapter and we feel very privileged to be active members amongst a group of "really nice people"! We've seen many changes in the past ten years, members moving on or quietly stepping aside resulting in a somewhat smaller active group. However - we continue to have great chapter rides, Sunday morning breakfasts and excellent participation in the annual highway cleanup. We have had a variety of enjoyable events such as bowling, chili cookoff, pie auctions, COY ride & bbq, Christmas parties, bug runs, time change breakfasts, ice cream runs, meetups with other chapters and GWRRA rider training. According to our GWRRA President, the focus on chapter gatherings should be "FUN". There has been some thought given to having more functions that are "no cost to members" so watch for updates and reminders on what's happening. On that note your input is highly appreciated - see you at the gatherings! Focusing on the positive, Terry & Glenda - ACD's Much appreciation goes out to Linda Yelich for putting out our newsletter for the last two years and to George Rehman for a term as chapter rider educator. George & Margaret will continue as our Membership Enhancement Coordinators while Rob & Linda continue as couple of the year. Wing Word 6

8 Ride to Reynolds Museum August 18 The smoke from the B.C. fires was heavy and a cool wind was blowing but that didn t deter approximately 30 bikes from following Glenn to the Reynolds Museum in Wetaskiwin. Participants toured the museum, enjoyed the outdoor band, visited the Honda, Harley and Vintage bike booths. A big THANK YOU to Turples for the lunch certificate. It was a great day! St. Peter says, "I'd like to get you guys in now but our computers are down. You'll have to go back to Earth for about a week, but you can't go back as humans. What'll it be?" The first priest says, "I've always wanted to be an eagle, soaring above the Rocky Mountains." "So be it," says St. Peter, and off flies the first priest. The second priest mulls this over for a moment and asks, "Will you be keeping track of us, St. Peter?" "No, I told you the computer is down. There's no way we can keep track of what you are doing. This week's a freebie." "In that case," says the second priest, "I've always wanted to be a stud." "So be it," says St. Peter, and the second priest disappears. A week goes by, the computer is fixed and the Lord tells St. Peter to recall the two priests. "Will you have trouble locating them?" He asks. "The first one should be easy," says St. Peter. "He's somewhere over the Rocky Mountains, flying with the eagles. But the second one could prove to be more difficult." "Why?" asks the Lord. "Because he's on a snow tire somewhere in Alaska." 10 From the Desk of the District Educator Good day everyone, Today I would like to talk a bit about Group Riding. When setting up a Chapter Ride there are a few things that you must consider. How many Motorcycles, Trikes, Cars will there be? Remember the heavier the vehicle the longer it takes to stop in an emergency, therefore the placement is very important. Put the motorcycles that are pulling trailers up in front, motorcycles next then trikes because they have more braking power, next cars come into the group last. Number of Bikes in a Group The ideal number is NO MORE THAN 5-7. If you have more make smaller groups. If you have say 12 that show up for the ride make one group of 5, and another group of 7. Just remember 7 is the maximum. Spacing When out for your ride make sure that the bikes are spaced reasonably close, 2 to 3 seconds apart at highway speed. If you have more than one group of riders separate each group by 3 to 5 minutes apart. This makes communication by all the riders simpler and is a safety factor for automobiles. There is nothing worse for a car to come up behind a group of bikes and all they can see to the horizon is motorcycles. They decide that they want to get around the bikes and pull out to pass, then they discover that there is oncoming traffic and force their way back into the column of motorcycles and trikes possibly causing an accident by pushing a motorcycle into another bike near them or possibly into the ditch. Have a Safe time on your Rides this Summer Alex Middleton, Canadian Prairies District Educator Prairies District Directors Report Hello to all Prairies District members, We hope those that attended Wing Ding this year had a safe ride and a great trip. Did you know that GWRRA has one of the best safety records for motorcycle riding of any motorcycle associations or groups? By having programs such as the Rider Education Levels Program, our members have been able to learn the importance of rider safety and enjoyed many a safe ride. It s easy to be involved with as all you have to do is participate to obtain your Level 1. By taking an ARC or any other motorcycle safety course you will get your Level 2 and by adding a First Aid course you move up to a Level 3. Then all you have to do is maintain these three levels and you will have your Level 4. For those of us that lead or tail GWRRA rides, the Road Captain s course is a valuable course that teaches the proper method of leading or tailing group rides. With this also comes the confidence that as a Road Captain, you are covered by GWRRA insurance in case of a liability issue due to an unfortunate accident. Remember to check the District webpage and please send us some photos that you would like to see on the webpage as these pictures will be seen by all including future members. Until next month, Gary and Susan Premech Prairies District Directors Wing Word 10

Chapter Calendar If you would like to submit a photo early for our chapter calendar, Fred is ready to accept them. The requirement is 35 copies on 28 lb paper. To save your printer ink, a great place to get your copies made is Staples - they have an online ordering option as well. A Brief History of our Calendar: According to our Chapter Historian Brian Brown the first calendar was put out in There is little information as to who published it. In 2007 Milt Sorenson took on the task and when Milt stepped aside Terry Heidt took over for a couple years. Thank you to Fred Grono who is now the current AB-C calendar publisher. If Milt's memory serves him correctly; the first calendars were produced without any pictures. When he took on the publishing, he made a hanger picture that was permanent and the pages were torn off as they expired. The first calendar with coloured pictures was 13 months long (started and ended with March) to allow an overlap between old and new. Wing Word 13

15 (submitted by Wayne Renfert) Quiz for Bright People (Submitted by Milt Sorenson) There are only nine questions. This is a quiz for people who know everything! I found out in a hurry that I didn't. These are not trick questions. They are straight questions with straight answers. 1. Name the one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends. 2. What famous North American landmark is constantly moving backward? 3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons. All other vegetables must be replanted every year. What are the only two perennial vegetables? 4. What fruit has its seeds on the outside? 5. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy, with a real pear inside the bottle. The pear is whole and ripe, and the bottle is genuine; it hasn't been cut in any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle? 6. Only three words in standard English begin with the letters 'dw' and they are all common words. Name two of them. 7. There are 14 punctuation marks in English grammar. Can you name at least half of them? 8. Name the only vegetable or fruit that is never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form except fresh. 9. Name 6 or more things that you can wear on your feet beginning with the letter 'S.' I was thinking about posting this without the answers... But that would be cruel... Wing Word 15

16 Answers To Quiz for Bright People: 1. The one sport in which neither the spectators nor the participants know the score or the leader until the contest ends: Boxing 2. North American landmark constantly moving backward: Niagara Falls The rim is worn down about two and a half feet each year because of the millions of gallons of water that rush over it every minute. 3. Only two vegetables that can live to produce on their own for several growing seasons: Asparagus and Rhubarb 4. The fruit with its seeds on the outside: Strawberry 5. How did the pear get inside the brandy bottle? It grew inside the bottle. The bottles are placed over pear buds when they are small, and are wired in place on the tree. The bottle is left in place for the entire growing season. When the pears are ripe, they are snipped off at the stems. 6. Three English words beginning with 'dw": Dwarf, dwell and dwindle.. 7. Fourteen punctuation marks in English grammar: Period, comma, colon, semicolon, dash, hyphen, apostrophe, question mark, exclamation point, quotation mark, brackets, parenthesis, braces, and ellipses. 8. The only vegetable or fruit never sold frozen, canned, processed, cooked, or in any other form but fresh: Lettuce 9. Six or more things you can wear on your feet beginning with 'S': Shoes, socks, sandals, sneakers, slippers, skis, skates, snowshoes, stockings, stilts. A woman sees her husband standing on the bathroom scale, sucking in his stomach. You know that s not going to help, right? she asks. Sure, it will, he says.
