1 From the President Summer 2016 is in full swing. Our charity car show was three weeks ago already, and by any measure the show was quite successful. In addition to all of the traditional tasks, there were new challenges this year. Most notably was the location change that required additional site planning, preparation, and coordination with the Mall and impacted stores. We did not receive any negative feedback from participants and there were some positive aspects to the change of venue. Thanks to HyVee, there was food and air-conditioned seating available, and the Fruitzen vendor provided cold treats. Also, the new location was more visible to Mall traffic resulting in more car show visitors. All in all, a good show and most importantly, financially successful for our charities thanks to our generous sponsors, participants and the hard work of your fellow CRCC members. Car show chair persons and CRCC EBoard personnel will soon begin researching options for the site of next year s car show as returning to the Younkers parkade is not likely an option in the future. As I write this letter we are in the midst of all the events of The Freedom Festival here in Cedar Rapids, and of course that means the 4 th of July Holiday is nearly upon us. Your CRCC is participating in three Freedom Fest events. We will have 10 cars in the parade through Czech Town and New Bo the morning of July 2 nd. Also everyone is invited to participate in the 2 nd annual Freedom Fest Car and Bike Show on the 3 rd Ave Bridge the morning of the 4 th. The other event was helping Freedom Fest organizers with the arrival of The Great Race to Cedar Rapids. A team of CRCC volunteers provided welcoming and parking assistance to the 100 participant cars that covered the 3 rd Ave Bridge on Saturday, June 25. There were some truly amazing cars there. With all of the traditional summer activities competing for your time the calendar gets filled and the summer seems to fly by. Remember to monitor the CRCC website and your s for all of the upcoming opportunities to gather/cruise with your fellow CRCC members and other car enthusiasts. Many of you will be attending the NCCC Convention in a few weeks and there are autocross events coming up. For those of you attending the NCCC Convention, please try to enjoy yourselves even though I know you re just sick about the fact that you are going to miss the July meeting. For those of you attending the meeting, remember we have catered in food and we are giving away a new Corvette as a door prize. I was trying to keep this letter short so Editor Kathy would have room to enlarge my picture to accommodate the many requests I have had from people wanting a larger image suitable for framing or was it dart throwing. Anyway, I may have rambled on to long maybe next month. With the arrival of Summer and the beautiful weather, we will be driving our Corvettes more and longer distances. The National Council of Corvette Clubs has set up a network of fellow Corvette people called "Family Helping Family" to offer assistance to anyone out on the road who might need mechanical help, medical help or just want to stop and have a cup of coffee. Wherever you are in the United States, you can go on line and find someone willing to assist you. For Example: One such person's Corvette had a mechanical issue that required that the Corvette needed to be hauled to a garage. The person they contacted not only could assist them with a reputable mechanic in the area, but also loaned them a vehicle and trailer with which to haul the Corvette. Another instance: A couple was traveling around the country when the gentleman had a severe heart attack. She was able to contact this club (which happened to be CCI, the Des Moines club). They took her to the hospital to be with her husband. Helped her call her children, then picked them up at the airport and delivered them to the hospital. Someone offered them their home in which to stay and the ladies in the club brought them food during their prolonged stay in Des Moines. We, of course, hope that we will never need that kind of help, but it is great to know that it is out there if you ever need it. You can access it at: click on the "Members Only" button, when prompted enter for the user name "NCCCMember" and then "1953corvette" for the password. You also can add your name to the directory and specify what kind of help you would be willing to give. Hope you all have a happy, healthy, safe summer. Diane Bowen WHAT: July CRCC Dinner cruise WHERE: Bulicek s Landing located at 306 Franklin Street in Delhi. WHEN: Tuesday, July 12 th. We will leave from the Marion Wal-Mart at 5:30 PM Please RSVP to me at bread1112@gmail.com if you plan to join us. Hope to see you then. Thanks, Jim McLaughlin July 2016 Beyond the Glass 5
6 Things have a way of working themselves out, it seems. And so it went with our annual charity car show. The change of venue, due to the construction near the parkade, surely complicated things and made for a considerably greater amount of work with meetings and organizing the parking layout. Throw in the predicted temperature on the day of the show at 99 degrees, and it could have been a disaster with entrants staying away because of the heat. And if the winds had been whipping around like they were earlier that week, shade canopies would have taken to the air like kites. Fortunately, we had some rain to cool things off a bit the night before, keeping temps in the 80s, and the wind remain at a breeze, for the most part, and made the event bearable. The true success of the show was due to the fact that our members really stepped up to the plate when we really needed them. It was great to see the numbers working together to set up the canopies, especially the 20' x 30' footer that was provided by Jerry and Jan Elm. It gave great shade to our Silent Auction tables. A special thanks goes out to our president, Chris Thompson, for stepping in and helping out with the parking situation, along with veteran parking & routing guru, Lyle Knutson and trusty sidekicks, Dianna Knutson and Mark Hamer. A lot of midnight oil was burned, along with much printing ink for parking maps that aided in keeping our show a somewhat unique, classed show and getting most everyone parked in the right spots. Our Silent Auction sales raked in almost $2,500, along with a pretty successful Garage Sale table. The highlight of the fundraising was the Klein Tool raffle, grossing around $2,600 due in great part to the efforts of Randy Sanders who really took the bull by the horns. In total, we sold 1,500 tickets every last one of the amount ordered! At the June meeting on the 16 th, show co-chair Bob Bitterman expressed his pride in the club as they rallied together to pull off another great show in spite of the change of venue and weather issues. Co-chair, Wayne Martin, was very pleased with the amount of proceeds raised for our four selected charities, under adverse conditions. And co-chair Dick Butschi echoed those sentiments. It truly was a team effort, as it needed to be to overcome the apparent adversities. There are so many other individuals to thank who headed committees and really went beyond the call to make it such a success, but we'll hold off on that, and try to keep this article relatively short. There are still some sponsor fees to be turned in, but it looks like this may be our most financially successful show in several years, as our total will come close to $13,000 in net proceeds. 10 by Larry Bushaw Sometime in late April of this year, a recently retired and very bored Marjory decreed that this summer would be "Roadtrip Wednesdays" for us. So off we go on mostly paved county roads visiting places that we have never been to before. Our first Wednesday was May 4th for a trip to the Pella Tulip Fest. We actually went 2 days prior to beat the crowds. Neat town, very cool tour of the large Dutch windmill and a very nice small town restaurant meal. Then back thru the Amanas for a disappointing, overpriced, small quantity dinner - seems to be the norm from them these days - that was an editorial comment! May 11th was a trip to the I-80 Walcott Truck Museum - Recommended! That day also took us to the Rock Island Arsenal to tour the grounds and really GREAT museum - getting a pass for the active US Army base was very time consuming though. May 18th took us to West Branch IA and the Hoover Presidential Library and grounds. We both learned a lot about Hoover that we did not know. The exhibit featured a gangster theme which was very entertaining. A round about trip thru Kalona IA to check out the brick patterned sidewalk quilts and a stop at the bakery was our trip home. May 21st which was a Saturday was a trip to Janesville WI (bought #110) and July 2016 Beyond the Glass 10 then a stop in Evansville WI to check out the many historic Victorian mansions. This was a nice easy drive thru many small towns. May 25th was a trip to Clinton IA to see the sawmill museum - kind of disappointing, lumber baron Curtis Mansion tour - WOW - then over to Fulton IL to lock & dam 13 and the Dutch windmill there. So far June has had interesting destinations too - Check back here next month for those adventures Thank you to Dick Butschi as our newest CRCC newsletter advertiser!
