1 From the President Can you believe it s August already? We have wrapped up another year of helping the hard working Freedom Fest organizers with the Freedom Fest parade and car show. We were out at Hawkeye Downs, (with the heat index over 100 deg.) where we had ten cars center stage for introductions and plaque presentations for this year s inductees to the Hawkeye Downs Wall of Fame. We also provided inductees and dignitaries with a couple of parade laps on the half mile track. By the time you read this, the practice Autocross at Hawkeye Downs will have wrapped up a busy July. Along with all of your other summer activities, there are still plenty of CRCC summer events coming up in August. We have our Dinner Cruise, a fun-filled meeting, delicious food at the annual smoked meat picnic, and August is the CRCC s sanctioned Autocross weekend. See Larry s calendar page on our website for all of the details and many other non-crcc events just in case you still have gaps in your calendar that need to be plugged. I won t go into all the events of September and October, other than to remind everyone that we are on the leading edge of Homecoming Parade season. These parades are listed on the CRCC website calendar page. You will also be seeing s from Homecoming Director Tracy indicating upcoming parades and number of cars needed. A link to our web based sign-up program should be available on our website soon. For the many club members who year after year have made themselves and their cars available for these parades, Thank you in advance. For those of you, who would maybe consider being a parade driver but have not due to concern for car damage or some other reason, voice your concerns to a fellow member who is an experienced parade driver. They can tell you what it entails and how to ensure the rider is safe and your car is protected from damage. I have done approximately 50 parades over the last seven years with someone riding on top of the halo bar of our coupe, and have received exactly zero damage to the car. I am proud that so many of our CRCC members are willing to spend their time and fuel to provide this community service. It is a plus for the school hosting the parade. It enhances the viewing enjoyment for the parents/spectators, and helps to make the event special for the student riders. Also, proceeds from this activity funds our donation to Camp Courageous and its fun! There are always a few days each year where we may have three parades at the same time and it s a struggle getting all the needed cars. If it is at all possible for you to sign up for any of these parades, please do so. Enjoy what s left of summer while you can. 6 Seven couples traveled to Omaha, NE for the 2016 Convention. Three couples ended up with health issues so couldn't make the trip. All of the tours were great, good food, good friends and a good time. It gave my husband, Bob, and I a chance to renew old friendships from across the US. Unfortunately some are battling the big C, some are dealing with various disabilities as a result of stroke and some have passed away. But, those who are still with us were still attending the convention and entering even the speed events. It made Bob and I realize how fortunate we are that we still have good health. It also made us realize that we need to get out and get things done on our bucket list before we can't. drive. This is our big event with part of the donations going to Camp Courageous. All of these events can be found on the web site, in the s and the newsletter. As Bob Bowen always tells you, look at your s daily. There is always news about our fellow members as well as events coming up. Happy Traveling! Diane Bowen Bob and I ran the Rallye on Thursday and placed fourth in the Man/women category. It was a great Rallye. We got to see some pretty scenery in Nebraska and Iowa. Also got to see some great Museums. Although we couldn't spend much time at the Museums, it gave us an idea of where to come to visit when we have more time. Bob entered the valve cover races on Tuesday. There were 42 entries. He received third place in the People's Choice category. He had a wheel alignment problem that he couldn't get a handle on, so, of course, slowed him down in the racing event. In spite of the problem, he managed to go 40 plus feet in the distance competition. In a few more years with our aging bodies, valve cover races may become the event of choice. We only have a couple more months to drive our Corvettes. We have the Hawkeye Downs Speed event coming up the end of August. Please volunteer to help with this event. It would be great to see more members attend the Saturday Pizza night. It is for our club as well as an award for the entrants. Come out and make some new Corvette friends from across the Country The Fall Leaf Cruise is coming up in October. I know Marjory and Larry Bushaw have worked hard on this event, so please come out for a beautiful drive in your beautiful Corvettes. Jim has some good places set up for our Tuesday night cruises. And lastly, we have Homecomings coming up in September. Please help Tracy out by volunteering to August 2016 Beyond the Glass 6
7 It s hard to believe it is almost time for homecoming parades to begin for 2016! This year s sign up will be similar to previous years with the exception of it being on our CRCC website. There will be an sent out to all members when it is available on our website for the start of sign-up. If you have never done this event before, try one out and I m sure you won t be disappointed. The kids are awesome and love seeing and riding in our cars. PLEASE consider signing up for these great events. We need everyone to participate that has a convertible or a coupe that the top can be removed. FYI: Don t forget that we often go out to dinner after the parades! If you have any questions or problems when signing up, just give me a call. Thanks, Tracy Rudd August 2016 Beyond the Glass 7 Roar into Omaha 2016 NCCC Convention Recap This year s National Corvette Convention was held in Omaha (LA Vista), Nebraska from July The following CRCC members attended the convention: Larry and Chris Beebe, Bob and Diane Bowen, Lori Brendes and Dick Butschi, Gary and Carol Cummings, Brian and Felicia Richardson, Sue and Tracy Rudd, and Al and Kathy Willenborg. The Cornhusker Corvette Club did a great job hosting the convention. Of course, they had the low and high speed autocross competitions, the car show, rallye and valve cover races. If you wanted, you could select any of the scheduled trips including to the Henry Doorly Zoo, Boys Town, Gary Kuck Motorsports Collection, and the Strategic Air and Space Museum among others. Some members went on their own to explore the Omaha area. Tuesday night was Hollywood Star Dress Up night at the dinner so Sue dressed up as a 1920 s flapper and I was Lucille Ball! Bob participated in the valve cover races placing third in the People s Choice Car Show part of the event. Bob and Diane did great and placed fourth in the rallye. It was Dick and Lori s first convention so they decided to drive the rallye. It was fun until they had some mechanical trouble (not serious) and had to drop out. It was exciting to learn that CRCC had two recent 2016 high school graduates receive scholarships. Mikayla Bowen a CRCC Youth member and daughter of Rob and Kim Bowen and granddaughter of Bob and Diane received the George Powell Memorial scholarship and Rachel Willenborg, granddaughter of Al and Kathy received a NCCC scholarship. I think I can speak for the others and say that we all had a great time. The first-time attendees saw what conventions are like and for those of us that have attended before; it s nice to re-unite with members from clubs from all over the country. The NCCC convention will be in Bowling Green, Kentucky next year. If you haven t been to the National Corvette Museum or General Motors Corvette Assembly Plant, attending this convention will be a great time to go and check it off your bucket list! Kathy Willenborg
8 by Larry Bushaw Otherwise now known as the "Misadventures of Larry & Marjory". This is the June report of our second month of summer Wednesday roadtrips to various places that we have never been to before. June 1st took us to Burlington to check out "Snake Alley" which I thoroughly enjoyed by taking two trips down it. We then ventured to Fort Madison to check out the railroad museum - it was just OK! Next was Keokuk, Bonaparte, Bentonsport with its beautiful Des Moines River, Keosauqua, and the highlight of the day, Eldon where the original Grant Wood American Gothic house is located. The visitor center there dresses you up in the American Gothic costume and then shoots a photo in front of the original home. We chuckled over that photo the rest of the day. June 6 (a Monday) was a tour of Kendrick Forest Products in Edgewood. This 1.5 hour tour of a working saw mill and cabinet shop was really "kewl"! June 8th was a Cedar Rapids tour to try find all the American Gothic "Overalls All Over" statues. We did find 15 of the 25. The rest of the day was just a very pleasant drive thru Palisades Kepler State Park, Wapsipinicon State Park, and then to check out the mock American Gothic house facade located in Stone City - nowhere near as neat as the real house in Eldon. Now for the "misadventures" of June 15th. We stopped at Cedar Rock near Quasqueton - Closed! Next on to Independence to visit the antique Mill - Closed! We tried the Independence August 2016 Beyond the Glass 8 railroad depot museum - Closed! On to Oelwein for their railroad museum - Closed! We did have a nice picnic at the Fairbank city park which has an island on the Wapsipinicon right there in town. Next stop was at the John Deere Museum in Waterloo - recommended - and then the Ice House Museum in Cedar Falls - also recommended! We drove thru the Wartburg campus in Waverly before heading over to Strawberry Point for an evening meal. Our plan was to drive thru Backbone State Park on the way home but when we got to the park gate - it was Closed! - - WHY? June 22nd took us to Webster to check out the Opera House, Sigourney, North English, Ottumwa which has an EXCELLENT Wapello County Historical Museum - recommended! We stopped at Blakesburg to check out the Air Power Museum which is antique air planes. Hot day, very hot inside! We went back to Eldon to check out the Opera House which was CLOSED as well as two other museums in other towns CLOSED that day. June 29th was a trip to Gunder. Marjory's parents had never had a GunderBurger before so this was a late Father's Day gift to her dad. Although, I recommended the ground PORK burger which I think is better. Her dad agreed. Our July trips are now in process and have also been a lot of fun. Check back next month for those reports - - -
