1 FROM THE PRESIDENT... You re just going to have to be patient with me this month. You see, I just got back from a fun-filled 9-state, 10-day vacation with a group of CRCC friends and I am now in a serious state of depression and am enduring intensive rehabilitation as I return to reality for my first day back to work. As I looked at the upcoming schedule of events, I m sure to be on the mend in a very short time, as we have lots of fun things going on in August! On August 5 th, we need your help with our final autocross practice at Hawkeye Downs in preparation for the real thing on August 25 th & 26 th. Food will be served at all three events by one of our charities, The Brain Injury Association of Iowa, lead by our own Kathie Adams, (with a little help from Jerry). Last year was a blast, so plan on attending. Our regular meeting will be held on the 16 th at McGrath s, and on the 18 th another cruise to Gunder, Iowa for a light lunch is planned. If you have never seen a Gunderburger, it can be a life changing experience and a fun day! Then on August 25 th & 26 th, CRCC RUNS THE DOWNS will be held. It takes a lot of people to make this important event run smoothly, so please plan on attending to lend a hand even if you don t plan on racing. As I continue my recovery back to reality, I am told that it helps to talk about my vacation, so don t hesitate to ask me when we meet, if you have a lot of spare time on your hands. 5 Positions Soon To Be Open Help Wanted: Administrative positions to be filled CRCC Charity Car Show chairmanships. May choose to serve as intern for the coming year. On-the-job training. Meet new and interesting people. Flexible work hours. Salary is non-existent, but fringe benefits are many. You will find the job very fulfilling! Apply now with Dick and Wayne! Yes, it s true. Dick Butschi and Wayne Martin are stepping down as co-chairs of the annual car show. They have been deeply involved in the show for 11 and 8 years, respectively, but will be hanging it up after the 2013 show. The positions are open to any and all members. It works better to have at least 2 co-chairs, and a small team of 4-6 members could split the responsibilities and make light work with many hands. It might also work better for those interested to get onthe-job training during this coming year, learning the inand-outs of running the show and getting a feel for the timing of its various aspects. Wayne and I have had a great time in coordinating this show for many years, and working with co-chair Danny Roberts, the past 3-4 years. We ve done a lot of planning and evaluating, overcome obstacles and made a lot of sacrifices to put on what we believe to be one of the better shows around this part of the state. But it s time to pass the torch. We will still be around, hopefully, to help with the show after 2013, but in a lesser capacity. Each member now needs to reflect inwardly and ask if it s time for them to step up and do their part as a club member not necessarily for 10 years, but maybe a couple. If you have questions, please contact Dick at , or captart66@fmtcs.com, or Wayne at , or satchelwayne@yahoo.com. Responsibilities would include: securing a site for the show, securing main sponsors and trophy sponsors, helping to design the show flyer and t-shirt, contacting corporate sponsors for donations, solicitation of door prizes and silent auction items, and organizing the general day-of-the-show activities. This all sounds overwhelming when listed, but keep in mind that most all of the sponsors are currently secured and there will be experienced people there to help with the various aspects of the show. It s a team effort coordinated by the cochairs, but accomplished by the efforts and talents of members like the Willenborgs (t-shirts, trophies, etc.), the Dolphins (data entry), the Thompsons (show registration), the Primroses and Parrishes (prize solicitation) and many others too numerous to mention. You will certainly not be alone with this event. The fringe benefits are many. You will meet and work with many outstanding people members, sponsors, vendors and entrants. And perhaps the most outstanding benefit is the tremendous feeling of accomplishment and pride in helping the less fortunate as you hand them a very healthy check, at the October club meeting. One needs purpose in their life a reason for being, and in this case, a reason to be a member of CRCC. August 2012 Beyond the Glass 5

7 Welcome Race Fans! The time for our Hawkeye Downs Low Speed Autocross is nearly here. On Sunday, Aug. 5 we will be holding our Practice Autocross at Hawkeye Downs. We will be out there setting up at 8 am. We can always use help setting up the course, setting up the timing equipment and just getting stuff out. This practice is open to everyone and any type of car. The fee is $15.00 of which $5.00 will be donated to the Honor Flight Fund. The remainder goes to meet the cost of the track rental, ice, and water. Any money remaining goes in the competition fund. This is a good opportunity to drive your car on an oval track, and also through a course set up with cones. Come out and play with your car and improve your driving, braking and steering skills. We will have the timer set up, but that doesn t mean this is a competition. You drive at the speed you are comfortable with; no one will be pushing you to go faster. We hold a practice autocross for our club members enjoyment and to have a dry run before our NCCC sanctioned event on Aug 25 and 26. The Big Event!! Our NCCC sanctioned Low Speed Autocross will be held Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26. On Friday, August 24 we will host a Welcome Party at the Clarion Hotel on 33 rd Ave for our entrants and all CRCC members. We will be registering and teching cars starting at 6:00 pm. Registration is held in the meeting room behind the bar while tech will be held in the parking lot. This competition welcomes all Corvette drivers, but if you are not an NCCC member or you are not driving a Corvette, you will be classed as a guest. If you would like to help with anything, please come out. Don t worry if you think you don t know anything about it. We will explain, and we won t throw you in over your head. Things that need to be done on Saturday, August 25: Saturday morning 6:30-7 am Set up shelters, get out tables and chairs, get cones out, set up tech area, set up staging, help set up the course, chalk the cones on the course, set up display, timing lights, set up the computer and the printer. Set up the big display easel board-cover with sheet for the stickers. Saturday morning 7 am Registration Fill out registration sheets and tech sheets. Collect money and make change. Set up a table for signing the waiver and wristbands. Set up a table for coffee and donuts. Bring supplies for coffee, pre order donuts and pick them up in the morning. Saturday morning 8:45 am Drivers Meeting - then racing starts. Help with staging (sending cars to the start line). Starters need a couple so they can relieve each other. Crow s Nest watches the cars call in when cones are hit or car goes off the track. Also waves flags for caution and stop. Will have radio contact with the timing table. Corner workers usually sit on the stage, watch for cones and cars off track, call in on radio. Will have a vehicle parked out there with oil dry, broom, shovel, and fire extinguisher. Driver must stay with vehicle (golf cart or gator etc.) and be readily available to drive out to pick up cones or to respond to emergencies, spills, etc. Timing table help Larry or Jon Pickrell give them breaks. If you are interested in the timing and are computer literate, this is a good time to check it out. Sticker runner takes stickers from the label printer and put it in the appropriate spot. Water boy or girl Help fill coolers with water and ice. Take bottles of water to the starter, stagers and crow s nest. Saturday afternoon/early evening help set up for Pizza Party. Set up tables, put out donated food, put out coolers of pop. After Pizza party, need to put food away, clean up. Put away timing equipment. Things that need to be done on Sunday, August 26: Sunday morning 6-7 am Registration trailer, waivers and wristbands, set up shelters, take work vehicle out to track, set up fresh display board. Set up table for coffee and donuts, and leftover food. Fill coolers with ice and water, may need to go get ice. Set up timing equipment, display, and timing table. I know it sounds like a lot, but with plenty of help, everyone only has to work part of the day. We have a lot of fun, talk with people from other clubs and regions, and watch some pretty fast cars! If we all work together, we can do everything by the book and have a smooth running, enjoyable event that all our entrants will want to come back to. After all, this is how we maintain our competition budget, which in turn maintains our trailer and equipment fund, and helps support CRCC. A big thanks to everybody who has helped in the past, and continues to do so; you guys are the ones who make this possible! Chris Beebe, CRCC Competition Director August 2012 Beyond the Glass 7

9 Route 66 Trip Marjory and I celebrated our 45 th wedding anniversary by driving our Corvette convertible from Chicago to California on old Route 66. This 2 week trip was one of the more memorable (and a check off the old bucket list ) trips we have ever taken. This was the first time we have taken a trip with no real daily destination just drive until you want to stop for the day. We had a map book entitled EZ 66 Guide that was just excellent at keeping us on what was left of the old road. Driving Route 66 thru Missouri was the prettiest and best labeled. Most parts were like driving thru a tree lined park. All the old ruins were just left standing as they were when abandoned. Oklahoma was able to keep us on the old route the entire width of the state. Arizona was the worst putting us up on I-40 at least 150 miles of the state. All the other states did put us on the interstate when the old road was no longer there but most did this for only miles each state. BUT old Route 66 just beat us to death! It is far from a smooth road and run flat tires didn t make the ride any smoother. Western Arizona was interesting as we drove from Kingman to Oatman thru a mountainous area that had probably 50, 15 mph switchbacks on the way to California. Some of the more memorable sites were "Standing on a corner in Winslow, AZ"; the meteor crater west of Winslow; Cadillac and Bug ranches in Texas; Tom Stafford museum in Oklahoma; Needles, California; Route 66 Museum in Oklahoma; Wigwam Motel, don't remember where!; Oatman, AZ; and all the old ruins. We did take two side trips. One was to Phoenix to visit Marjory's older brother where we spent our anniversary by going to a dinner theater to see "Grease" which was very well done. The other side trip was to the Grand Canyon. If anyone wants to do the trip and borrow our book, they are welcome to it. Marjory was making notes in it thru out the trip. Larry Bushaw I think we drove the entire width of Oklahoma at 45 mph but then we were in NO hurry anyway. We averaged 28.8 mpg for the entire 4,435 miles but that was probably because we never were driving very fast. We did drive with the top down until the temperature hit 107 one day people look at you like you re NUTS! It finally hit 116 degrees that particular day south of St. Louis. We never really felt hot until we got back to the Midwest corn and soy bean fields humidity. From central Missouri west most all the ruins were still standing, just abandoned. Central Missouri east to Chicago the ruins were basically gone and something new built on the site. It s just amazing to drive thru these old towns and see a dozen old abandoned hotels and gas stations in what was at one time a bustling town. August 2012 Beyond the Glass 9

10 I want to thank all of you that attended the Cook-out at Keystone Place on Thursday, July 12 th. The food was great!!! Several of the residents rode in our cars and had a lot to talk about. 12 From the desk of Larry Beebe 2012 NCCC Convention Director Thank you to all West Region Clubs, The 2012 NCCC Convention, sponsored by the West Region, is now just a memory and we hope you have all resumed your normal summer routines. We are still dealing with expenses, requests for reimbursements, etc., so I can t say yet if our Convention is a monetary success but I can say that we feel the Convention was in every other respect a great success. In going through the lists of chairpersons and volunteers, we find that around 200 people volunteered to chair or work (or both) more than once during the week of Convention. The level of commitment from you and your Club was very gratifying and we hope you realize that your willingness to organize, plan, invest your time, money and energy resulted in what we feel was one of the best Conventions in recent years. Convention had no major problems because each Chairperson had everything organized and a plan set so everything could move along smoothly. We all made new friends, people we may not have known without Convention and we look forward to seeing them at other events and at the West Region Banquet. The West Region came through with flying colors and the help and cooperation between all of the Clubs is the best indicator of why West is Best. Please forward this to all of your Club Members. Once again, thank you to you and your Club for all of your help and support, Larry Beebe, 2012 NCCC Convention Director Linda Siecgrist, 2012 NCCC Convention Co-Director August 2012 Beyond the Glass 12
