Page5 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE It s been a while since I last wrote one of these messages. In August I was in my happy place, Martha s Vineyard. No, once again I failed to find Carly Simon. And I also missed an event involving another famous person. Her brother Peter, a photographer, and funny man Bill Murray got into a little physical altercation at a local eatery. We were supposed to be at this particular restaurant on that evening but at the last minute our plans changed. Oh well, anyhow again the family and I had a magnificent two weeks on the island and we are already counting down to 2019 s adventure. I d be remiss if I didn t mention this year s Corvettes at Carlisle. It has been a few years since I last attended. Over the last several years school has started prior to Carlisle and I wasn t able to attend. I told myself that nothing was going to stop me from attending this year and began formulating a plan to come up with an excuse to tell my administrators that I would be missing the first few days of school. This being my final year as an educator I thought, What are they going to do, fire me? It was a pleasant surprise when it was announced that the first day for teachers was the Monday following Carlisle! The weather this year was perfect for the four days spent in Corvette Heaven. While it appeared that the number of vendors was down a bit from previous years and that some of the major Corvette specialists had scaled back to a few laptops and some catalogs, I was able to find everything I was looking for. I hoped to buy a new set of wheels for my 03 Roadster and was sure I knew what I wanted and where they were located - in the large tent of Corvette America. My plan was to wait until Saturday to make my purchase, giving myself time to really be sure it was what I wanted. Of course, nothing ever goes as planned. During Friday night s dinner I received a message to call home ASAP. Expecting the worse, I stepped out of the restaurant and made the call. My wife explained to me that she had received word that my credit card had been compromised and my account closed! My first thought was Well, there goes the Show Special on the wheels. I explained my situation to several Club members and I couldn t believe they offered to loan me the money or to put the sale on their credit cards and have me pay them back when we returned. Before accepting any of the generous offers, I thought that I would at least talk to the sales rep from Corvette America, explain my situation, and see what he might suggest. The Corvette America team took my order at the special show price and told me to call them with my new card number when I returned home. I did just that and the wheels arrived a few days later with free shipping. I want to thank all those who graciously offered to help me out and I realized I shouldn t have been so surprised. That s just who and what this Club is all about. Thank You!

Page9 MORE ABOUT THE AUGUST CLUB CORVETTE OF CONNECTICUT SHOW A heartwarming letter from John A. Croffy I attended your 26 th Annual Car Show in Guilford, CT on July 8. I have attended 25 of your 26 shows. Although I forgot my wallet, you let me in anyway. Enclosed is my check for $25 to cover the entrance fee. I always try to attend your show because it is so well done and you always have a great turnout. At the 25 shows that I attended, I won 24 trophies. I was interviewed by the Club in the past but forgot to tell you the best part of my story. My Dad came to your show 10 times and won a few trophies with his white 1980 Corvette. He passed away in 2003 at age 81 from a heart attack but two days before he died he was out driving his Corvette. I am enclosing a photo of my dad and me at the Rye Playland show back in the 1990 s. We each won a trophy that day. I hope to see you again next year, God willing. John A. Croffy

A MEMORABLE CARLISLE EXPERIENCE by Rick Wasserback FRIENDS FROM DOWN UNDER This was my 25 th year in a row of attending Corvettes at Carlisle. Steve Widger and Ed Yost have been my constant companions for at least 17 of those years. Like Dennis Krajewski, I start looking forward to the Carlisle trip weeks before we leave and I m like a little kid on Christmas Eve waiting for the day to arrive. We have our routines and favorite restaurants to frequent and we like to hang out by the pool at the Days Inn before dinner and have a drink or two. Over the years we have met some very nice Corvette enthusiasts while in Carlisle, but this year was exceptional! We were comfortably set up at one corner of the pool, and two men and a woman were camped out at the other end. After a quick dip and a brief exchange of pleasantries, Steve Widger noted a distinct Australian accent in the group and inquired why they were in Carlisle. They told us that they were here for Corvettes at Carlisle and this bonded our relationship, so they moved up to our end of the pool. They restore older Corvettes, at least 30 years old, and presently own 10 Corvettes, 8 of which are straight axle C1 Vettes. Australian law requires all cars newer than 30 years old be converted to right-hand drive, a very expensive process. Restoring older Corvettes allowed them to retain the left-hand drive to avoid all the costs of converting to right-drive as well as to preserve the integrity of these classic cars. Their mission at Carlisle was to find the matching green material for the convertible top for a 1955 harvest gold Corvette that was in its late stages of restoration. The photos of the car were amazing! Every detail had been carefully attended to except finding the correct green fabric for the convertible top. Bob Thomas, the original founder of their company, passed the reins over to his son Steve, who works very closely with his significant other, Michelle. These people were undoubtedly three of the nicest people I have ever met. We talked for hours on Thursday evening and for hours more on Friday. It was so interesting to hear about their culture, Australian life, and their absolute passion for American cars, not only Corvettes, but all muscle cars in general. Michelle s daily driver is a beautifully restored 1965 Mustang fastback, 289 with a 4 speed. Definitely my kind of girl! She s not afraid to get her hands dirty working on the restorations and also enjoys a glass or two of Jack Daniels after a long day working on cars. Page10 I told Steve Thomas that I made a bucket list years ago and had completed most of the events on my wish list of things to do. The one remaining wish is to scuba dive somewhere exotic, most notably the Great Barrier reef in Australia. Upon hearing this, Steve gave me his business card, along with address and personal phone number, along with the instructions: Oi Mate, ya look me up when you re in Australia, ya hear. Yes Steve, I do hear and it would be an absolute pleasure to see all of you again.

Page11 AND MORE ABOUT CARLISLE Les Browne had plans to go to Carlisle in his C5 with Ivan Chasnoff. However, Les had to back out at the last minute due to a shoulder injury that put him on the disabled list. So, Les let Ivan take his car so that Ivan and his son could caravan to Carlisle with the Club. Now, we all know that Les is not a car detailer. He would rather drive his car and when it needs to be cleaned he goes to the Touchless Car Wash. Yes, the C5 is a nicely appointed driver, but with other Club members cars that had been detailed parked nearby, why did the Celebrity Judge pick Les car as the Celebrity Choice? So the question remains: Why? We may never know for sure. When Ivan returned and presented Les with his award it made for a nice memory for Les of the Carlisle that never happened for him.

Page13 AN ADVENTUROUS LAKE GEORGE WEEKEND by Susan Wadyka On September 6, Bob and I, along with Rhonda and Rich Forristall, headed up to Lake George for the Adirondack Nationals car show. This is more than just another car show - it s a weekend getaway. If you like fast, loud and beautiful cars, this is a weekend for you! About 1,800 cars were in the show and the event wasn't limited to just one area of Lake George. Car fanatics sat in their lawn chairs along route 9 asking the hot rods to burn rubber to show off their vehicles. Rich and Bob could not wipe the grins (or black dirt) off their faces! During the parade of cars on Friday and Saturday nights, people were seven deep on the sidewalks on Main street. On Sunday all we had were great memories of the car show, but the weekend was not over yet. On Sunday morning we headed to the Adirondack Vette Fest in the heart of Glen Falls. It was no surprise that both Rich and Bob received much deserved top pick trophies. The weekend was a lot of fun but, unfortunately, our Vette had to be flat-bedded for the 3 ½ hour trip home. It s a good thing that we have AAA Premier membership. Thank you Rich and Rhonda for hanging with us until the tow truck came. Now Bob has to figure out what is wrong with the tranny on his car.

You don t have to be concerned with the spelling or grammar - I ll take care of that. That s my job as editor. I also look forward to any tips you can contribute to the newsletter to help your fellow members. I have seen all five colors (Royal, Red, Black, Navy, & Sand) and they are all very nice. The following photos show the embroidery on Royal, Red and Black. ROYAL RED BLACK The order form for the wind shirts is attached. The price is $35.00 for Small through XL and $38.00 for XXL. At this point it appears that all of the members who wanted a duffle bag have ordered one. Please me at walt.kaercher@comcast.net or call my cell (203) with any questions. Thanks! Walt Kaercher
