3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE When writing the monthly President s Message, I always try to include some humor and keep it upbeat. This month it s going to be a bit different. This is by far the toughest Message I ve written. The passing of member Mike D Avino has had a profound effect on me. I know that everyone who knew Mike was deeply saddened upon hearing the news. I attended the wake and did my best to console Carole, knowing full well that they were just words of comfort and nothing I said would ease her pain. While preparing to write this President s Message, I began to reflect on my relationship with Michael. When I joined the Club, some 18 years ago, the only member I knew was Dennis. We had been best friends forever. It was Mike D Avino who really welcomed me into the Club. He showed a sincere interest in me. The first event I attended as a member was a Newport week-end. Mike took me under his wing. He made sure that Susan and I were included in the various activities along with the other Club Corvette of CT members. I joined Club Corvette as a proud owner of a 1969 Corvette coupe. Previously I had a minor incident with the car and it sat in my garage for a number of years. Mike urged me to get the Vette back on the road. He offered advice about where to take the car for repairs and what vendors to use for parts. I finally got the car back on the road, but it still needed some TLC. At that time everybody was talking about the 50 th Anniversary Caravan to Bowling Green. I got a call from Mike on Good Friday. He suggested that I needed a more reliable vehicle to make the trip and, of course, he knew where that vehicle was. I purchased an 88 coupe from a friend of his and enjoyed that vehicle and remembered that 50 th Anniversary celebration for many years. I have been lucky enough to have been President of this amazing Club twice and could always count on Mike to offer sound advice when it mattered. His enthusiasm for the Club and our annual show was ever-present. I can hear him now, and always will, saying, We ve got to keep it classy! As long as I m involved our annual show it will continue to be a class act! The show will go on! RIP Michael D Avino. Peace, Page3 Jack

7 NEWPORT, RI MEET AND GREET by Rhonda Forristall and Don Byrne The Newport weekend cruise began as almost all Club events do, at a restaurant: Lenny s in Branford. Ken & Barb, Sue & Bob, Gina and Bobbie met for lunch and Don joined them at the tail-end of the meal. The group then headed for I 95 and proceeded up to Mystic where we were joined by Rich & Rhonda. A short time later we arrived at our home for the weekend, the Mainstay Hotel. Jerry and Donna had arrived a day early as they often do to take in more of the local sites. George and Valerie, Dave and Nina, and Louis and Roseanna also arrived ahead of us. The event began with a dinner that evening for the 160 or so attendees. There was a full agenda set up for us on Friday. It began with a cruise to the Doris Duke mansion at Rough Point. This amazing home has about 100 rooms with a large collection of paintings, tapestries, and art objects by famous artists. It was pointed out during the tour that Doris Duke was at the forefront of preserving scores of Newport homes from becoming rundown. She used her sizable fortune to restore these homes. After the tour, members hit the waterfront restaurants for lunch. Page7 After lunch the event members headed for Fort Adams to visit the Volvo Race Village. The boats were lined up along a dock so the visitors got a good look at them. The Village had many other exhibits and venues, some with simulations as Rich discovered. (See photo right) Here he guided an 18 wheeler over a course. There was much walking involved in this aspect of the day, so I am sure Rich was happy to sit down and rest his knee as he traversed the course. Later that evening Donna and Jerry joined a few other brave souls for a 12 meter sail around the local waters. Others went out for dinner and celebrated Ken s birthday. (See photo left)

8 Page8 On Saturday we boarded trolleys for a tour of Newport. We had a very interesting guide who had many stories to share while she interacted with the whole group. She pointed out Jay Leno s new summer cottage (a huge Brownstone on the Cliff Drive) and mentioned many Leno sightings in town. We viewed many of the homes that reflected the fortunes that some of our early industrialists acquired. Homes like The Breakers (probably the grandest of the homes), The Elms (built in the style of an 18 th century French chateau), and Rosecliff (often noted for its grand staircase). We also went by St. Mary s church where John Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier were married. The trolley stopped at the Marble House, which was constructed in 1888, and was the ultimate of the time. It was built for William Vanderbilt, the grandson of the shipping and railroad tycoon. It s located on Belleview Ave and backs up to the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic. The ballroom in this house has a mural on the ceiling and gold colored walls. The dining room had two large oil paintings that defined the room. The walls were deep pink marble. It has a very large table and gilded bronze chairs that must be extremely difficult to move. A trip to the kitchen came next. There were six coal-burning stoves that had to be over 20 feet long. Food for the lavish parties that were held upstairs and in the Chinese Teahouse out by the cliff was prepared in the kitchen. (The teahouse was also the site where Club member Ken proposed to Barb several years ago.) Saturday afternoon we visited the Newport Car Museum. What a fantastic place! Cars were grouped by manufacturer and spaced far enough apart so that no one never felt crowded. There was such a variety of makes and models that the people in charge were obviously real car guys (or gals).

9 Page9 Several of the members found a connection to some of the cars for a variety of reasons. There were simulators to test your driving skills on the track and Ken and Rich tested their driving skills. (See photo right) This museum was a highlight of the trip for Don because so many autos were so well presented. He found himself going back to revisit several of the cars because it was like being lost in a candy store before becoming aware of sugar & carbs. And a room was set up for us with coffee and cookies! We ended the evening at the Atlantic Resort. There were 157 participants this weekend representing clubs from New Jersey to Ontario. Great food and dancing. We had the lucky table that won three of the raffle prizes: Rich won a tin sign, Bob won cleaning supplies, and Don won a battery tender.

10 CAPACHET, RHODE ISLAND CRUISE by Jack Stacey Well I can never say My Corvette has never seen rain again! The weather gods did not smile on the group traveling to Brown & Hopkins, located in Chepachet, RI, on Sunday, May 27. The morning began with clouds and, as predicted, rain showers followed throughout the day. The forecast and some other unexpected situations caused a few members to cancel but some of us decided to take the trip. Susan and I made our way to the I-95N rest area in Branford with our Corvette just as the rain began. Frank and Shari Bugaj, Rod and Linda DeFord, and Lam and Ria Viores arrived shortly after, all driving their Corvettes. The surprise was that Kurt Ryder, who always argues that you should drive your Corvette ( After all, it doesn t melt in the rain. ) arrived with Christine in a Chevrolet Malibu! Kurt knew that he would be relegated to the rear of our small caravan. The cruise to RI went off without a hitch, with wipers on intermittent mode. We drove directly to the parking area of the Purple Cat Winery which was one of our destinations in Chepachet. The group then headed to our main destination, the Brown & Hopkins General Store (B & H). B & H bills itself as A Destination for Generations. Opening in 1809, it is one of the oldest country stores in continuous operation. After perusing the goods, everything from penny candy to primitive cupboards, the members made their way to several antique shops surrounding B & H. We eventually all gathered back at the Purple Cat. Page10 What cruise or adventure associated with Club Corvette of CT would be complete without food? Located within the building that is home to the Purple Cat Winery and Craft Beer is the Philanthropy Tea and Coffee Company, which offers a great selection of homemade soups, salads, crepes, paninis and wraps. What makes dining here unique is that you can order soft drinks or specialty teas and coffees from Philanthropy or grab a glass of wine or craft beer from the Purple Cat to go along with your meal. As usual, the group enjoyed an extended lunch, filled with great

11 Page11 conversation, after which members made the return trip on their own. (I know that some of the members purchased bottles of wine from the selection at the Purple Cat, both for gifts and for personal consumption, before traveling home.) Despite the weather, I m pretty sure that those who attended enjoyed a leisurely day in the historic town of Chepachet.

12 MEMORIAL DAY EAST HAVEN by Jack Stacey, photos by Kurt Ryder Fortunately, the rainy weather held off for this year s Memorial Day festivities in East Haven on Monday, May 28. This year s Honored Veteran was USAF Phil VanDeusen. Phil was a Cold War Veteran, part of a crew who flew over Russia photographing various secret sites. These missions have just recently been declassified. As Chairman of the East Haven s Veteran Council, I, as well as the Town, would like to thank Barry Baiardi, Les Browne, Don Byrne, Gary Kolasa, Dennis Krajewski, George Macary, and Kurt Ryder, for making their Corvettes available to chauffer a vet to and from the Town Green. (Dennis car was unavailable so he drove mine.) This year every Corvette was occupied with a veteran. Without the participation of Club Corvette these veterans would have difficulty getting to the Green and would perhaps would have been unable to participate. Club Corvette of CT and their program of Vets in Vettes have partnered with the town of East Haven for several years and it is most appreciated by the Town, by American Legion Post 89, and by the East Haven Veteran s Council who sponsor the event each year. Page12 The town and I look forward to the continuous support and participation of Club Corvette of CT in our military celebrations.

36 On Friday, April 27 as part of the Michelin NCM Bash, General Motors held their annual event seminar providing an update on Corvette. With the 2019 model year starting earlier than usual, most of the details had already been released. But the team at Chevrolet saved one fun piece of news for the event attendees. Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge Juechter and Corvette Product Marketing Manager Harlan Charles were joined on stage by GM Bowling Green Assembly Body and Paint Manager Chuck Valentini who brought two surprise show and tell items to accompany the announcement of two new colors. Displayed were rear quarter panels featuring the new blue exterior color, Elkhart Lake Blue, and the new Shadow Gray. Elkhart Lake replaces Admiral Blue while Shadow replaces Watkins Glen Gray. Watkins Glen Gray, as of April 3, 2018, was the third most popular color for 2019 Corvettes with 15%. Admiral Blue was the 7th with 5 % of the 7070 produced. Timing for the color swaps is as follows: GJ1 Shadow Gray (replacing G7Q Watkins Glen Gray) Page36 May 17: G7Q Watkins Glen Gray Last Day to Order June 18: Last Day of Production June 28: GJ1 Shadow Gray Available to Order August 6: First Day of Production

37 Page37 There are no more allocations of Watkins Glen Gray for ZR1 GS7 Elkhart Lake Blue (replacing GTR Admiral Blue) June 28: GTR Admiral Blue Last Day to Order August 13: Last Day of Production August 30: GS7 Elkhart Lake Blue Available to Order October 1: First Day of Production In an interview with WBKO Television, Chuck shared some information on the new paint shop, explaining how it enables the Plant to create colors like the new hues. The new paint shop we just installed certainly is a key enabler to it. We have a lot better technology and are able to control the spray a lot better than what we used to do in the past. Chuck added that the new blue shade is more metallic than that of their Admiral Blue Metallic option, and the new gray metallic takes on a lighter shade than previous gray colors, along with being a tinge greener. This is also a different paint formula that we use in our new shop. And that s allowed us to push the limits a little bit more on paint pigments, and how we are attaining color positions, he said. MUSEUM EXHIBITS Louis to LeMans: History of Chevrolet Racing The Museum s Exhibit Hall has once again been transformed to feature a special themed display. For a period of about seven months, that theme focuses on Chevrolet racing history. The story of Chevrolet racing is told from the early days of Louis Chevrolet as a racing driver for Buick, through the AMA ban on racing, to Chevrolet Racing s involvement in NASCAR, and the Le Mans winning Corvettes. Significant stories are told through the display of various cars and artifacts, from engines including one from a C5-R, and a fuel injection cutaway, to race suits and more. The exhibit will run until January 4, 2019.

46 Page46 News from Club Clothing The wind shirts that I ordered after last month s meeting were available on Monday, just in time for the June meeting. It appeared to me that all the members who ordered a wind shirt were delighted with it. The only bad news is the color Sand is on backorder and will not be available until October. The other 4 colors (Red, Royal Blue, Navy Blue and Black) are available. I can say now that I have seen all the colors and they are all very nice. The following photos show the embroidery on Royal, Red and Black. I neglected to get a picture of Navy. ROYAL RED BLACK The order for the wind shirts is attached. The price is $35.00 for Small through XL and $38.00 for XXL. Our Vendor, Galli, will be coming to our Corvette show and has offered to bring with them any duffle bags ordered by members without the shipping charge. The duffle bags cost $45.00 and must be pre-paid. If you would like a duffle bag, please send me the attached order form plus a $45.00 check for each bag. I am going to place the order with Galli no later than Tuesday, June 12th. Please me at walt.kaercher@comcast.net or call my cell (203) with any questions. Thanks! Walt Kaercher
