Page6 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The month of December isn t even half over and already it s memorable and bittersweet for me. Our annual Christmas/Holiday party held on December 1 was once again a great affair. Thanks to Les Browne for securing the Clinton Country Club. The food, as always, was delicious; there was good music and good friends. The facility is always tastefully decorated and the fireplace gives it that festive holiday atmosphere. Congratulations to Stan Griskewicz and Rhonda Forristall for being recognized for their continued dedication to the Club and to Les Browne for all he has done as Web Master and as Events Chairman. This past Sunday, December 9, Club Corvette participated in its annual Toy Drive in support of the State Police Troop G in Bridgeport. As my friend Dennis always says, This is truly a feel-good experience. We left McDermott Chevrolet with a State Police escort and approximately 75 Corvettes filled with toys. Upon arrival in Bridgeport the toys were unloaded and brought into the barracks and we once again filled the conference room. Then we headed across the street to Dunkin for coffee and. Thanks to Rich and Claudia Stewart for once again providing the refreshments and thanks to Joe Cetta for the morning spread and to McDermott s for the continued support of the Club. Also, thanks to George Macary for his continued dedication to organizing this event. One of the other great things that takes place each year at the toy drive is the presentation of a check to our partner, The Connecticut Food Bank. This year we donated $5,000. This brought us to a cumulative total of $50,000, which equates to 100,000 meals that the Club has donated since we began this affiliation with the Food Bank. But we weren t done. On the following day, Monday, December 10, the Club delivered 400 toys to WTNH Channel 8 where we met our good friend Gil Simmons and the Morning Team. These toys will be distributed through the Boys and Girls Club of Milford. A special thanks to another of our great sponsors, Ernie Betulia and Guilford Texaco, for an additional donation of $500 toward the purchase of toys.
Page7 The bittersweet part of this message is that it s my last President s Message. It has been an honor and a privilege to have served this great group of caring and giving individuals in Club Corvette of Connecticut for the past four years. Everything I did was intended for the betterment of the Club. Since becoming a member in 2000 I have tried to be an active member of the Club. I have served in many different capacities and have enjoyed every minute. As President (this being my second go-round) I have gotten to meet and rub elbows with some of the Corvette elite, some whom I have admired for many years, never thinking I would someday be in their company. I leave the position, but not the Club, knowing that it will be in good hands with new President Rick Wasserback. I wish you great success, Rick. Of course, I couldn t have been successful if it were not for the dedication of so many members of the Club. Thanks to all those who served on the Board and those who stepped up and volunteered to run an activity or man a particular work station at our annual Corvette show. One thing I have always prided myself with - and I mentioned this when I ran for political office - is my ability to surround myself with good, hard-working people who were always dedicated to the task at hand. I found this to be quite easy because the Club is filled with just that type of people. So I end this letter with heartfelt gratitude to every one of you. Thank you! Finally, I m going to close with some words from John Lennon: And so this is Christmas. I hope you have fun, the near and the dear one, the old and the young. A very Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. Let s hope it s a good one, without any fear! Peace, Jack

Page9 MEMBER NEWS STEVE LUDWIG S TRIP TO VETS N VETTES - November 8-10, 2018 In November I decided to go to the National Corvette Museum to participate in their annual event, VETS N VETTES. This trip was approximately 956 miles and 17 hours of driving. The first day, November 6, I drove to the Holiday Inn Express in Bridgeport, WV. 496 miles drive time took me about 9 hours with stops. On day two I drove 460 miles to the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green. That part of my trip took another 8 hours. I left early so I could get to the Museum late in the afternoon Wednesday to check in. There was a large group already there. We had free admission to the Museum the whole weekend. At 8:15 a.m. on Thursday, November 8, the opening ceremonies were held at the flagpole. It was nice to see all the Veterans with their hats from all branches of the service. We then staged in front of the Museum and caravanned over to the Motorsports Park. There was a driver s meeting and then we went to our cars to get our laps on the Motorsports track. They sent us out in groups of five, with a lead car. We were told to keep three car lengths apart. We traveled at faster-than-highway speeds and wide open down the straight in excess of 100 mph.
Page10 I got four sessions on the track at 3.3 miles per lap, 3 laps per session. I put 50 miles on for the day. We had a free lunch of grilled hamburgers and hot dogs. There also were local Veterans there that you could give rides to around the track.
Page11 After the exciting day at the track we all went back to the Museum where they had a Social with a cash bar and Meet & Greet Welcome and early Thanksgiving Dinner. We also received a 10 th Anniversary glass gift. On Friday we went on a road trip to the Barren River Lodge for a buffet lunch. It was a nice cruise with all of the Vets N Vettes. On Saturday we again gathered at the NCM circle. At 8:45 a.m. we departed for downtown Bowling Green for the Veterans Day Parade. It was Vets N Vettes as far as the eye could see. We returned to the Museum later to regroup and travel to the Local VFW for a fish fry and chicken dinner. Registration for the event was $ Vets N Vettes Sweatshirts were $20 and $18 for NCM Members. The Meet and Great Dinner was $25 and Barren River Lodge was $25. Registration is limited for all events so you need to sign up as early as you can. It was a great trip and I plan to go back next year!

CONNECTICUT FOOD BANK A DAY OF SERVICE by Rick Wasserback Photos by Rick Wasserback, Leon Bailey, and Kurt Ryder Club Corvette committed to a day of service at the Connecticut Food Bank on November 17 to help the Food Bank provide meals to those who do not have enough food to fulfill their daily needs and also to transport meals to homebound individuals. Page14 There were 17 Club members in attendance and Kurt Ryder graciously recruited the assistance of 2 of his friends to assist as well. This was, as Dennis Krajewski would say, a feel good event where you have this overwhelming sense of accomplishment and self-fulfillment for helping someone else. The food donations received by the Food Bank are received randomly - in boxes, paper or plastic bags, and loose - and then loaded into huge carboys, which are 4 x 4 open-top cardboard bins on a wooden pallet. The contents of each bin must be sorted according to type: breakfast foods, prepared foods, pasta, vegetables, condiments, canned goods, personal care items, etc. Unusable product must be segregated and discarded. Our members sorted 10,177 lbs of product that Saturday! In addition to sorting all of the various foods, we were able to fill 150 boxes of strictly Thanksgiving foods that were to be distributed to the homebound.
Our appointed crew leader from the Food Bank was Lenny. Our assistant leader was CCC member Ellen Dressel, a very competent leader. Lenny is a 19 year employee of the Food Bank. He takes pride in his work and truly enjoys what he does. The Food Bank is very special to Lenny because years ago, after serving in the military, Lenny was out of work, struggling to get by. As a hungry young man with nothing to eat he began to frequent soup kitchens. Lenny never forgot his early years and the struggles he endured. Working at the Connecticut Food Bank brings him great satisfaction, and it shows in everything he does. Our members worked as a finely tuned machine that Saturday. Together we worked to accomplish so much in so little time. Everyone had jobs to do and did them with pride and enthusiasm. Hyla & Ellen Cookie Page15 Frank

Page25 FUTURE NEWSLETTER ARTICLES We really need your help in writing articles for the newsletter. You have responded very well with photos of events, but we also need more articles. Anyone who organizes an event should prepare a write-up for the newsletter after the event or ask someone in the group to do it. You don t have to be concerned with the spelling or grammar - I ll take care of that. That s my job as editor. I also look forward to any tips you can contribute to the newsletter to help your fellow members. Let s try to continue the Tips From Members section of the Vette Gazette, similar to what you see in your car magazines. 28 Page28 Corvette Trivia for Dec 18 By Les Browne Here is some C1 trivia for you to think about. 1) In 1951 a group of Harley Earl's "Special Projects" crew began work on a GM sports car. Bob McLean designed a general layout for the car. What was code name of this project that ultimately became the Corvette? 2) Who is credited with naming the Corvette and where did the name come from? 3) Corvettes have been assembled in three different cities, can you name them? 4) What did the original front emblem and horn button on the "Autorama" Corvette feature? And why was it changed? 5) How many cross bars, or teeth, were on the original 1953 Grill? When was it redesigned and how many were teeth were on the new grill? 6) The first Corvettes were actually "rolled" off the assembly line. Why?
Two New Board Members Join NCM The National Corvette Museum would like to welcome two individuals to our Board of Directors. Chuck Fast Chuck Fast is no stranger to the Museum or Motorsports Park. In fact, his daughter s name (Kimberlee A. Fast) adorns not only the pavilion at the track, but also the entry road that takes you there and on the Acre Club wall as you enter the Holley Tower, recognizing the family s contributions for six acres at the track. Chuck s involvement with Corvette started in 1964 when he purchased his first, a 1965 Convertible, and joined the Corvette Club of Michigan the following year. Having owned at least one Corvette at a time since, Chuck has had a total of 20 so far, with four currently being in his garage a 1967 Coupe, purchased new that he plans to donate to the Museum, a 2011 ZR1 and 2016 C7.R Convertible, both of which were picked up at the Museum through the R8C Delivery Program, and Kim s 2004 which will also be donated to the Museum. Page29 Kaye Wagner After Kaye's dad purchased a Corvette, she caught the bug. Shortly after purchasing her own C7, Kaye visited the National Corvette Museum, doing a V.I.P. Plant and Museum tour. Since then, she travels to car shows on her own, including the Corvette and Camaro show her club, the Sioux Falls Corvette Club, holds each June. Kaye has held several offices in the club, including Vice President and most recently President. It was Kaye s involvement with her
Welcome Two New Museum Staff club that caught the eye of National Corvette Museum Board Chair Lon Helton. Our club plans an opening event to kickoff Hot Summer Nights and then drives in a caravan to the Black Hills Corvette Classic where participants from all over the country gather. Lon introduced himself, so I invited him to be a dignitary and lead the 400+ mile drive to Spearfish, said Kaye. We chatted off and on all weekend. He asked me to consider applying for the board position, and here we are! We have two new full-time team members we'd like to introduce you to! Maci Hensley With the retirement of NCM Events Manager, Karen Renfrow, and promotion to Manager of Bryce Burklow - we needed another member for our Events team. Maci served as an intern at the NCM Motorsports Park over the summer, and is a graduate of Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation Administration with concentration in Facility Management and Event Planning. Be sure to welcome her when you see her at our next on-site event - the Michelin NCM Bash April 25-27! Page30 Mandi Thomas As the number of team members at the Museum and Motorsports Park has grown, so has the need for an HR Manager. Mandi Thomas comes to us with over 15 years of experience, both in the non-profit and for-profit sectors. Mandi moved to Kentucky in 1996 when her dad transferred from the GM assembly plant in Tarrytown, NY to GM Bowling Green Assembly. A SHRM Certified Professional with BS in HR Management from WKU, and MBA from Morehead State, help us welcome Mandi to the NCM team!

He took the name from the smallest class of vessel considered to be a warship. 3) Flint, Michigan , St. Louis, Missouri 1954 thru 1981, and Bowling Green, Kentucky 1982 to present. 4) It featured an American and a checkered flag. It was discovered that using an American flag on a product trade mark was against the law and the emblem was changed before the New York Motorama. 5) There were 9 vertical bars, or teeth, on the original 1953 grill. It was redesigned for the 1956 Corvettes and it had 13 vertical bars, or teeth, on it. 6) Chevrolet had not yet figured out how to ground the car to a fiberglass body so the cars would not start and had be rolledoff the production line when they were complete.
