President s Message ***SOS***SOS***SOS***SOS*** SOS***SOS*** SOS*** I have to be very serious with this month s President s Message, and I hope this heading gets your attention. I have tried to reach out as Activities Director, Car Show Chair and President looking for new volunteers to step up and help with Eurocar as the volunteers who plan the show year after year are always the same. This past year, we had some more people step up and I don t want to short change those new volunteers - but I have to be honest. The current show volunteers are tired. They have successfully put on 9 shows, now, but have never been able to attend one. They are too busy fulfilling their responsibilities to even have the opportunity to see all the great cars or enjoy even a portion of the show. We are at a critical juncture, now. If the show is to continue, we need to make some changes and we need new people to fill the positions these volunteers have so aptly taken on for the past 9 years. So our October meeting will primarily be devoted to brain storming, and looking to YOU for ideas and assistance or even if we will continue sponsoring the show. Dave Winne and I have offered to chair the 2011 show. We have reached out to the Porsche Club to see if there is interest in sharing responsibilities for future shows. I know this was discussed at the August meeting, but we were primarily talking to the same core group that runs the show. SAVE OUR SHOW cont d Pg 4

from Page 1 I would be remiss if I didn t mention the fact that this function is our primary funding throughout the year. It helps to pay for day-today operating expenses, those great newsletters you get, not to mention one of the great benefits of our club is reaching out to the community through our charity donations. I am asking ALL members to make a concerted effort to attend our October meeting so we can discuss future plans and even the feasibility of Eurocar. We need you, your ideas and participation or this great event will surely become a thing of the past. I know many people will be disappointed should the show be dissolved remember, we had 229 cars at Eurocar Can I count on you? Meeting Date: Tuesday, October 5 th 6:00 pm - Dinner 7:00 pm Meeting Safety Fast! Sharon MG Enjoy The Ride! What s Going Around Dick & Clare Woods bought a 1999 Mazda Miata, red (of course) with 13,000 original miles on it. Looks like new, runs great and we are hoping that it won't require as much upkeep as the MG. We are getting too "mature" for the work. Also may sell both the MG and Volvo (this one is a work in progress). Remember to let me know any news, additions to family, new job/career/ graduations, etc. Just to cmwoods1138@yahoo.com - Clare Woods For Sale MGB for sale-1977 with 67,000 miles on it. Runs good, condition good, we need to make room for our new "toy". at RL44mag@yahoo.com or call There is a picture on the Classified section of the MG website and more available if requested. 4

How long have you owned your car? Think about it! Mr. Allen Swift of Springfield, MA, received this 1928 Rolls-Royce Picadilly P1 Roadster from his father, brand new, as a graduation gift in He drove it up until his death last year at age 102. He is the oldest living owner of a car from new. Just thought you d like to see it. He donated it to a Springfield Museum after his death. It has 170,000 miles on it, still runs like a Swiss watch, is dead silent at any speed, and is in perfect condition. Benefactor M. Allen Swift was actually a West Hartford, Connecticut native who was very fond of Springfield. A fifthgeneration gold beater, Allen was given a choice to either go to school or help his father run the family gold leaf business. If he chose the family business, his parents promised to buy him any car he wanted. Allen picked a $10,900, 1928 Springfield Rolls Royce. He owned that car 77 years, which put him on record as being the longest single owner of a British or Springfield-made Rolls Royce in the world. Allen lived to be 102. Two months before he passed away, he gave the car and a million dollars to the Springfield Museums. The money was to buy the building that now showcases Esta s Indian Motorcycle collection, the Smith & Wesson firearms exhibit, and Allen s wonderful car. 7 ATA* Tours to the Beardslee Castle Lawn Show by Dave Faulkner On Saturday July 11th the ATA joined the MG Car Club of Central NY and a MG Club from Albany, NY and maybe a couple of other British car clubs for a Auto Lawn Show featuring British Cars on the well shaded lawns of the Beardslee Castle located about 6 miles east of Little Falls, NY. The Beardslee Castle sits on a rising hill on the north side of the Mohawk River. The Beardslee grounds offered a splendid and outstanding view of the Mohawk River and the Mohawk Valley. Mike Mastracco the Activities Director for the MG Car Club of Central NY along with fellow club member Randall Brown, the owner of the Beardslee Castle had the idea for a car show. They decided on a day and placed an order for a sunny warm day from Mother Nature and bingo a car show was born. Some s to other clubs and the car show ball was rolling. There were 10 members and guests of the ATA on the shady front lawn of the Beardslee Castle parked right near where lunch was going to be grilled and the beverage supply were set up. Arriving first does have its advantages, sometimes. Parked in line in no order were; Lynn Arnold with her 1957 TR 3, Maynard and Barbara Daigle in a 1980 TR 7, Stephen and Frances Kramer in a 1966 Morgan +4, Dave Faulkner with his 1975 Spitfire, Scott and Sheila Zirlin in a 1978 MGB Roadster, Mike and Karen Warzek with a 1959 MGA, Doug and Ann Shaver with a 1979 MGB, Craig and Connie Terbush with their 1973 TR 6 along with their friends Dave Perry & Suzanne Clark in a MG and Mark Kellet and John Phelan (a fellow MG owner) in Mark s 1958 Jaguar XK 150. A good representation of British automobiles and colors, there were no duplicate colors in this group. Meeting Doug and Ann in Cobleskill were Craig & Connie from Schenevus, NY and Dave & Suzanne from Oneonta, NY. The drivers & passengers of the three LBCs drove along the back country roads to the Village of Nelliston, NY on NYS Route 5. According to Connie & Craig, the back roads were crooked and smooth perfect for their LBCs to play on!! Arriving in Fonda, NY about 10 miles east of Nelliston were Mike & Karen at the designated meeting spot in the center of Fonda. They were soon joined by Dave, the Daigle s, Lynn, the Kramer s and the Zirlin s. After some chit chat about our drives to Fonda, it was time to start up the engines and head west on Rte 5. Leading the away to Nelliston to meet up with the rest of the gang was Dave. Arriving in Nelliston, we were soon back on the road heading west to the Beardslee Castle with Doug & Ann in out in front. NYS Route 5 follows the Mohawk River and is a scenic drive through the Mohawk Valley and another good road for Little British Sports Cars to play on. There are places along the Mohawk River where the remnants and remains of the Erie Canal can be seen. Pulling into the Beardslee Castle driveway we were greeted by the owner Randall Brown and directed to a premier parking spot under the trees on the well shaded front lawn. Mark and John arrived a little while later. Mark had taken NYS Route 20 and then head northwest to the Villages of Sprakers and Canajoharie in Montgomery County and then on to Route 5. Mark mentioned that route could have been a tour all by itself. Before Mark and John s arrival, the members of the MG Car Club of Central NY started to arrive. They like us made a tour out of the drive to the castle. Within 45 minutes to an hour the whole front lawn under the trees was covered with Little British Cars. The lawn show hours were 12 to 4, which was just right. Also at the show and parked on the other side of the driveway was a variety of automobiles that were invited. I counted between 50 and 60 cars on the fields and over 40 of them were British!! A jolly good showing. It was a great day to hold a British Car Lawn Show, the lawn of the Beardslee Castle was outstanding, Randy and his staff were terrific hosts. Lunch was fantastic, there was a very good selection of lunch choices. The cooks on the wood fire grills were getting a good workout as were the grills and other food service personnel. It was also great to meet, mingle and talk with the folks from the MG Car Club of Central NY and the Albany area MG Club as well and the other car owners on the other side of the driveway. There were people who were driving along Route 5 that stopped in just to admire all of the cars. Everyone agreed the Castle was a cool place not only because it was very refreshing to go in there on a hot day and cool off for a bit. It was also a very interesting inside to just look around. If you want to read about the history of the Beardslee castle the web site address is: The members of the ATA all enjoyed the day watching the British Sports Cars pull in, meeting and talking with fellow British car owners and we look forward to another trip out to the Beardslee Castle. Both Randy and Mike did an outstanding job!! Craig and Connie who are new members in the ATA and this was their first ATA event have the finally thoughts of the day. Perfect weather, meeting new friends, winding roads, British Spots Cars..it just doesn t get any better than this! *ATA is The Adirondack Triumph Association 7

ONE OF OUR NEW MEMBERS E MAILED ME THIS INFO: (c'mon other new members, let s hear from you, too!) Terri, As we discussed the evening of the club meeting attached are a few pictures of a MG I saw the car during a recent trip to Wright Patterson AFB OH. When I first saw it I wasn t sure what it was, and upon inspection saw that it had an MG emblem on it. The owners, Peter and Anne Cosmides explained the car was an MG 1100 I forget what year they told me it was and although it sported an MG badge, they said the car was more Mini than MG They told me they were attending a Mini Rally there in Dayton. Peter said the 1100 was very near completely original I believe even the paint was original. As we chatted, Peter gave me his business card turns out he restores old cars primarily British ones. He also told me he s originally from Central New York so some of the long time club members may recognize his name. I took a few pictures of the 1100, then said so long to Peter and Anne, and their dog Cooper (for real!). Hope you enjoy the pictures. If anyone would like more information on the MG 1100, I ve included Peter s business card with his phone number and web site I m sure he d enjoy chatting about his car and it s history. Thanks Rick, For your great story and pictures! Rick Shaughnessy 8

Showing our Stuff By Rick Kunz Well, I was sitting home on Sunday the 22 nd of August, I think it rained that day, and was thinking about not going to Rochester, or not going out on the boat, or not mowing the lawn, or well you get the idea. I was thinking about the great little show we went to in Parish, put on by the Parish Volunteer Fire Department complete with a great Chicken BBQ. We saw a lot of cars we have never seen before and also talked to quite a few people about our little cars. There was one guy there that usually comes to Eurocar with a solid Healey Blue Austin Healey 3000, real nice car. Bob Shanahan with his TD and Jean Heckathorn and her daughter, with her Midget, joined Terri and I for a nice breakfast in Central Square and then we took some back roads to Parish for the show. It was a small show, about 100 or so cars, but they had a nice craft show and pretty good Chicken BBQ for $8.00. Shows like that are the root and backbone of the car hobby and we may even see a new member or two out of that encounter. Check out some of the pictures Terri took on our web site. We will send them to Jimmy. Last week we went to McGraw. We met for breakfast at the Denny s in Carrier Circle, same suspects as went to Parish, and we took all back roads there. We traveled through Jamesville, Lafayette, Apulia and Truxton on a day that weather was invented by the Chamber of Commerce or the New York Tourism Bureau. It was another small show, about 100 cars, trucks and motorcycles but very nicely laid out and once again cars that we haven t seen around before. Future MG Owner 1971 Karmann Ghia While talking to the firemen that put the show on they told us that they were excited when they saw us pulling in. We were directly behind a 71 VW Karmann Ghia owned by the same family since new and a 72 Midget, so it looked like a parade of European classics. There was also a drop dead gorgeous Pantera DeTomaso from Liverpool NY. The owner spent quite a bit of time talking to us about MG s and is thinking about getting one so his daughter can drive it to shows along with them and they can drive it the rest of the time. They are another prospect as we invited them to attend our monthly meeting. We packed a picnic lunch and took along my 10X10 pop-up and had a little encampment with quite a few visitors including the fire department inviting us back next year. They will give us a spot for the club so we can promote our little part of the hobby. Best in Show Parish Winner s Circle Yeah, it s a hemi September is a busy month with Watkins Glenn, Wampsville and White Lake. But let s not forget those little local shows. They are the breeding ground for new ideas and a different prospective on the hobby. Not to mention the possibility of new members and even meeting new friends. Keep an eye on the Bulletin Board and I will let you know the next time we are going out to Show our Stuff Safety Fast! Enjoy the Ride 9
