I m not sure about everyone else, but I m soooo confused as to what month we re in! We ve had gorgeous June weather not snowy, cold Syracuse March weather. I LL TAKE IT! Our summer cars arrived unscathed at the house after four months of hibernation. We ve driven the BMW almost daily for the past week or so. Dave has been working on the MGC out in the garage quite frequently over the past few weeks. You can always tell that he s out there when the radio is blaring and the air compressor is running! My sweet Emma Lou (our Golden Retriever) lies by the kitchen door and waits for her Dad to come in for another cup of coffee. With the awesome winter we've had, maybe Deb and Tom will think twice about moving South wishful thinking, I know. Anyone can handle this type of winter! The Club had a busy March: Dick Jeffers provided the tech talk at the March Membership Meeting by showing a great video about vintage classic sports cars. It was very entertaining. Thanks much Dick! On March 15 th Janet and Lynn Moyer hosted dinner night at Pier 57 Restaurant in Liverpool. We had a super turnout and everyone was in a fantastic mood because SU won their first game (of hopefully many) in the NCAA tournament. Bob Knauff and Ray Hevner hosted the March Eurocar planning meeting at Driver s Village. Very good progress has been made so far. Sign up sheets for day of show volunteers will be available at the April meeting...look for Bob and Ray's Eurocar update in this issue. On March 21 st the Larkin s hosted pub night at Meghan MacMurphy's in Liverpool. Great fun was had by all! If you have ideas for a Spring event or would like to host one, please contact Jamie Currier Dix, our activities director. Upcoming April events: The date for the 2 nd annual Progressive Dinner has been set for April 28 th, beginning at 4:30 PM. We ll begin the evening with hors d oeuvres at the Moyer s in Fulton and then make our way to the Winne s for dinner and end our eating and social extravaganza at Dorion s in Bridgeport for dessert. If you're interested and didn't sign up at the March meeting, there will be a sign up sheet at the April meeting. So far the turnout looks great! The last pub night of the season will be hosted by Patty and John Golas at Spaghetti Warehouse on April 13 th. Much thanks to all who hosted either a dinner or pub night this winter! Message Pg4

7 by Bob Knauff Greetings yet again, fellow Eurocar volunteers. Does the date June 17 th, 2012 mean anything to you? If not you re either a) not a father b) don t have a father or c) forgotten already that the MG Car Club of Central New York will be hosting its annual Eurocar extravaganza that day at the Lorenzo State Historic Site in beautiful Cazenovia, New York. If the weather in June is as nice as the weather in March we can expect a record turnout. To that end. judging has been simplified this year with a new consolidated Contemporary category for all cars 25 years and newer. Judging will go from 10:00AM to 1:00PM, no exceptions. We will also hold the awards ceremony (sounds grand, doesn t it?) at 2:00PM instead of 3:00PM to keep things moving and to avoid having the awards given amid the sights and sounds of teardown activities. And speaking of the activities, I m pleased that so many of you have chased me down pleading to sign up for the volunteer list. If you haven t yet you stand to become the object of ridicule and scorn from all the cool kids and I can t guarantee that a swirly or two might not be in your future. Come to the April and May club general meetings ready to sign up to do your part. Two months and counting. Jean and I left our Winter Texan Home in Mission and flew to Las Vegas for a few days. We stayed at the Imperial Plaza on the strip. When we entered the lobby the first thing we saw was a 1951 MG TD displayed in front of the main desk. The placard Indicated that the MG TD s were built between 1950 and 1952 and that 30,000 were manufactured with 23,488 exported to the United States. The TD was a four speed with a 2500cc motor and could reach 77 mph and from 0 to 60 in 18 seconds. The Auto Collections is located at the Imperial Palace and features over 250 classic, race, muscle and celebrity cars. Most are for sale or on consignment. There are also not for sale and loaned for display cars. Car prices range from $10,000 to $10,000,000. The $10,000,000 car is a 1961 Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato Lightweight which is only one of two factory built. Included in the collection are more than 25 Rolls Royce cars. Johnny Carson s 1939 Chrysler Royal Sedan, being his first car, is there and is not for sale. When he became famous he tracked the car down in Nebraska and had it restored. At the end of his career he sold to The Auto Collection for $1. Also included is the 1962 Lincoln Continental Towne Limousine JFK rode in, 1977 Lincoln Continental Mark V owned by Elvis Presley and 1940 Cadillac owned by Howard Hughes. Included with the British cars is a 1988 MG Metro 6R4 Group B Race Car. It is powered by a V6 engine which was modified from a Rover V8 engine. The car was not very successful in rally competition and changes in rally rules retired the car. The Auto Collection has an excellent web site which has photos and description of all the cars. 8 8 Submitted By: Brian Daley On June 22, 2011 I purchased a 1976 Triumph Spitfire from my friend and neighbor Kim Simmonds. Kim is a professional musician (of Savoy Brown fame) born in Wales and settled three doors north of me in Scriba, NY. We became friends after he called my office years ago looking for some insurance. Since he was literally on my way home I stopped by to review policy forms with him and realized he was THE Kim Simmonds. The lead guitarist and progenitor of the English Blues Rock Band that I had spent many hours of my wasteful youth listening to on vinyl LP s. Shortly after my acquisition I ran into another neighbor and friend Neal Johnson at a watering hole on Lake Ontario. It was a beautiful summer evening so I took my E36 BMW convertible into town to enjoy the sunset and a few cold ones and as I was parking my car Neal pulled in with his TR3 (his license plate says Not MG). At that point the car was in my garage up on jack stands so I could clean and inspect it as it had been used rarely by Kim (about 3000 miles in 9 years from what the records he gave me showed) as well as the previous owners as the odometer showed barely 57,xxx miles on it. The guy who serviced it for Kim had also serviced it for the two prior owners all in our area over the past 20 years so it was confirmed original mileage. I told Neal once I got it road worthy I d bring it by his place, about 2 miles from mine, to show him. A new set of tie rod ends, tires after painting the wheels, some minor repairs to the soft top and a good interior, engine and underside cleaning along with an oil & filter change was all it took to get her on the road. The visit to Neal s was how this story began. He was planning on attending the 2011 British Invasion in Stowe, VT in September and wondered if I d want to go too. His wife Linda wasn t keen on going and my girl Melissa although always up for an adventure wasn t too sure a 560 mile roundtrip through the Adirondack mountains and a ferry ride across lake Champlain was a sensible maiden voyage. It sounded perfect to me! So at approximately 5am on September 17, 2011 with the air temp at about 36 degrees Neal stopped by my house with his very cool trailer in tow. We threw a few things of mine into the trailer and headed northeast before the sun came up. It was scheduled to rain that day and aside from raising the top to repair a few minor cracks I had never driven the car with it up before. I wasn t sure how much rain the top would keep out and since I had never run the heater or defroster wasn t sure about the visibility either not to mention the ability of the wipers. Dressing warmly with gloves and hat was all I could do while I hoped for the best. Our goal was to make the ferry in Port Kent by 10am, it s scheduled departure for Bennington, VT. We figured it would take us about 4½ hours so we had a 30 minute cushion for the unexpected. That happened about halfway there. I wasn t sure what my range was as I had only gone through one tank of gas by the time we left so we stopped for gas a couple of hours in. When we went to leave Neal s car wouldn t start. I went in to use the bathroom and get a Coke and by the time I got back he had the distributor apart and was removing the electronic unit and installing the points and condenser. The car never missed a beat after that. We had just used up half of our cushion so now we had to make time. My Spitfire was running flawlessly and the rain had stopped by then so with Neal leading the way we drove those two English Sports Brian's Spitfire Cars the way they were designed to be driven on the type of roads they were meant for. By the time we got to Port Kent the ferry was unloading the cars from Bennington so we had time to stretch our legs, pat our stead's and relish in the afterglow of a great drive! Upon arrival at the motel we checked in, unloaded then headed over to the show field to register. Since we had signed up early we each got a commemorative beer mug and a goody bag. We checked out the vendors and clothing racks then decided it was time to get serious we needed to find a bar and get some beers Saturday morning Neal snuck out early and by the time he got back I was ready for breakfast and a day at the car show. He told me about his morning drive up and over Smuggler s Notch over breakfast and we made a plan - the itinerary of the weekend show included a group ride over the mountain through Smuggler s Notch on Sunday morning but we decided that an early start before breakfast with no other cars other than ours would be much better. We headed over to the show field after breakfast to park in our respective designated areas, him with the TR3 s and me with the Spitfire s. The number and types of cars was incredible. Every motel and restaurant parking lot was filled with English cars. We passed Bentley s, Rolls, Lotus, Jaguars, Morgans when was the last time you were waved at by a couple in a three-wheeled Morgan?!! The whole day was one surprise after another. By the time the judging was over and the parade of winners was completed we were ready for a good dinner and some cocktails. Sunday morning dawned cool and foggy but no rain. I had installed my new tonneau cover the night before and was anxious to see how it was on the road. After wiping off the dew and warming up the motors we headed up to the

9 Notch. I have been driving cars since my Aunt Daisy taught me to drive her Galaxie 500 when I was 13 years old on the roads bordering the cornfields of Downers Grove, Illinois. I ve been behind the wheel of Twin Turbo Porsche s at speed at Watkins Glen racetrack and in the passenger seat of a Cadillac CTS-V with Brian Redman at the wheel at Monticello Motor Club and close to a million road miles in all types, makes and models of cars, trucks and RV s but yields 70 mph and that little bugger will hold that as long as the roads and the traffic police will allow. Keeping up (or trying to) with Neals TR3 through those fabulous roads and scenery, passing cars like they re standing still ( a 70 Pontiac GTO included!) was the icing on the cake of a fabulous 3-Day Car Fest. We found a bowling alley just north of Neal's TR3 - Not An MG Ferry Ride to Bennington, VT the ride we took that morning was one of if not THE best ride ever! The breakfast after the run allowed us to warm up and plan the rest of the day. We decided to check out of the hotel, head over to the show field for a last look at the cars and people and then make our way back home. The weather turned out to be perfect all weekend (in spite of the Friday morning drizzle) and since we had about a six-hour drive home we left the site about 11am to catch the ferry in Bennington. Neal's Trailer in Tow on the Ferry Mexico, NY where we made our last stop. A few beers, some bar food and reliving the events of the weekend was a great way to end the trip. This year s event is September If you don t have anything better to do I suggest you sign up and plan on it. Maybe a group run from the CNY MG Club? More Info is at Photos by Neal Johnson Please submit your Club Dues are $25.00 Applications available at The ride home was better than the ride up as the weather was perfect. About 68 degrees and sunny. Tops down and dry roads was all we needed to carve those Vermont and Northern NYS roads into submission.
