If weather permits, we ride afterwards. Most rides are spontaneous, with destinations determined that morning. Come with ride suggestions! P r e s i d e n t s L e t t e r What happened to summer? In 2014, that s a perfectly reasonable question. If it s not the temperatures, it s the rain or the threat of rain.

I picked a restaurant in Pine with the idea that it would make for a really nice summer evening ride to get there and back.

Our little dinner party was to be right in the middle of a string of heavy rainfall predictions. It got everyone s attention. Of the 19 people who came, not one arrived on a bike.

As it turned out, we would have ridden there entirely on dry roads and the return ride would have been on almost dry roads, having missed a very light shower just a little earlier.

I think everyone in the Club has been by it many times but if you haven t eaten there, you should. The menus change frequently and there is always something different to try. The atmosphere is great.

I was reminded of that this past Wednesday evening. I had planned a bit of a surprise dinner party for the members who had stepped up to work at the Top O the Rockies Rally. I picked a restaurant in Pine with the idea that it would make for a really nice summer evening ride to get there and back. The reservations were made in advance, of course, but this is Colorado so what s to worry about? Well, the weather forecast promised no such luck. Our little dinner party was to be right in the middle of a string of heavy rainfall predictions. It got everyone s attention. Of the 19 people who came, not one arrived on a bike. It s a good thing the restaurant had our name from the reservation or they would have had no idea we were a riding club. Mother Nature does have a way of rubbing it in. But what I really wanted to write about was the dinner. It took place at Zoka s Restaurant, right on the main drag in Pine. I think everyone in the Club has been by it many times but if you haven t eaten there, you should. The menus change frequently and there is always something different to try. The atmosphere is great. If you re going there for lunch, they even have designated places to tie up the family dog. The room we sat in has a really special mural, painted by a local artist, of the valley you look at right out of the restaurant window. On the upper walls and by the same artist, they have a series of large paintings of different aspen stands. I wanted it to be a special evening for this special group of volunteers, without whom key parts of our TOR would have fallen apart. 5 O f f i c e r E l e c t i o n Club Officer Election Notice From Mike Szabo, Vice President In accordance with the Club Bylaws, we are asking for members to nominate themselves or any other qualified member for any of the four elected Club officer positions which are President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Qualifications vary slightly by position but at least include the following: Candidates for elected office must reside in Colorado, be members in good standing of the Club for at least six (6) months, be sixteen (16) years of age or older, and own and be licensed in Colorado to operate a motorcycle. Please make your nominations known by contacting the Board appointed Election Officer, Siggi Pflumm at siggip@msn.com or at his cell phone which is (303) Please leave a message if you get his voice mail. The Election Officer will then verify that the nominee is qualified to run for the named position. Your immediate attention to this matter is very important. The details related to election of officers can be found in the Club bylaws, pages 5 through 7. However, it is especially important to note that the September monthly Club meeting is declared to be a business meeting for purposes of officer election activities. If between now and the close of nominations on the evening of September 10th there are unopposed candidates for any of the four elected offices, that person or those persons will be declared the winner for their respective positions. Thus, if you wish to be involved in determining the leadership and future direction of your Club, you must see to it that that your preferred candidates are nominated in a timely manner. Tour of Honor The BMWMCC Tour of Honor ride to Veterans Memorials started with a riders meeting and a group photo of about a dozen riders at the veterans memorial in downtown Morrison.

6 Tour of Honor The BMWMCC Tour of Honor ride to Veterans Memorials started with a riders meeting and a group photo of about a dozen riders at the veterans memorial in downtown Morrison. We then rode up to Idaho Springs where we stopped at the Steve Canyon statue which the patriotic citizens placed there in 1950 to honor all servicemen. Three years earlier they had renamed nearby Squirrel Gulch to Steve Canyon. Milton Caniff, the creator and artist of the Steve Canyon comic strip and its predecessor Terry and the Pirates was a guest at both ceremonies. Next up was the 10th Mountain Division ski trooper statue and memorial near the Dredge in Breckenridge. After some photos and a brief history of the 10th, we had a good lunch at Q4U Barbeque in Frisco which serves good Kansas City style BBQ. And it is still run by the gal who founded the place with her husband way back in to enjoy the views out over the valley while others rode some of the gravel roads over toward the old ammunition bunkers. From Camp Hale we broke into smaller groups, with one heading back over Tennessee Pass, one heading to I-70, Breckenridge and Hoosier Pass, and one heading to Vail and the 10th ski trooper statue. Of course those of us heading to Vail and beyond were able to ride that stretch of US-24 which is one of the most scenic and fun highways in Colorado. It certainly was a great day of riding, learning and being with other motorcyclists. My thanks to all who rode with us Saturday. Randy Bishop From Frisco we rode the scenic highway over Fremont Pass to Leadville s Evergreen Cemetery where a nice, but simple veterans memorial honors Leadville veterans, and especially LCPL Nicklas Palmer, a Marine who died in Iraq, and Sp5 Edgar McWethy an Army soldier who died in Vietnam. McWethy s Medal of Honor citation well described his bravery and sacrifice, something that is not uncommon among those that have served in our Armed Forces. We then rode to Tennessee Pass to see the 10th Mountain Division memorial and from the large stone monuments and the story boards we learned more about the exemplary service of the 10th during WWII. As an aside we also learned some of Tennessee Pass history from one of the 1929-vintage bronze Colorado Historical Society plaques placed nearby.
