2 P r e s i d e n t s L e t t e r Officer Elections for the 2016 terms In case you missed it, the Club s election process went smoothly in the months of September and October. The Club is open for officer nominations starting June 1st of each year. This year, all four officer positions were ultimately filled by candidates who were unopposed for their respective positions. As stated in the Club bylaws, unopposed candidates are declared winners by acclimation, thus requiring no vote of the membership. This year, the positions of Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer were all filled at the September meeting by the 2015 incumbents, Mike Szabo, Jeff Kelley and Frank Ricci respectively. As of the September 9th Club meeting, there had been no nominations for the open position of president. The bylaws called for extending the nomination period for unfilled offices until the following month s Club meeting, scheduled for October 14th. As of two days before that, no one had stepped up. What turned out to be the only nomination for president was made on the 12th for Michael Kilgore, a highly regarded long-term and current member of the Club Board. He pointed out to us that while he has owned and operated a BMW motorcycle in the recent past, he did not currently own one, but he has been shopping for one. The executive Board, recognizing Michael s excellent qualifications, unanimously agreed to suspend the ownership requirement in his specific case, thus allowing him to meet that final qualification for nomination. A final opportunity for nominees to step forward and be recognized was made at the Club meeting on October 14th. Seeing none, Michael was elected by acclimation. So, please join me in CONGRATULATING Michael Kilgore, Mike Szabo, Jeff Kelley and Frank Ricci for once again stepping up on behalf of the Club! The experience they bring to the table in their various positions bodes well for the continued health of the Club. Ride safe, Jeff BMWMCC.org In the Wind 2
3 2016 BMWMCC Board Michael Kilgore President Michael has been a member of BMWMCC for 9 years. He grew up in Chattanooga, TN where he started riding dirt bikes with friends on powerline cutouts. Michael and his wife, Keren, of 34 years, raised their family in Raleigh and Charlotte, NC. They relocated to Castle Rock in 2006 and joined the club that year. They now live in the Lakewood community of Belmar and have 3 amazing grandchildren. Michael is an avid motorcyclist. He has ridden over 40,000 miles on a BMW 2004 K 1200 GT and has recently purchased another K bike, a GT. During his club membership has been an active volunteer for events as well as served as Vice President and Trustee. He has also served as Vice President of the BMWMOA Foundation. Using his experience in organizational development, and public relations he has assisted the growth and sustainability of local and national human service and charitable organizations. Michael looks forward to meeting our many new members, enjoying the camaraderie in the club, and greatly appreciates all the volunteer efforts that it takes to keep the BMWMCC rolling on two wheels. Mike Szabo Vice President Mike Szabo is a Colorado native; born in one of the best states to ride motorcycles both off road and on. He has lived his whole life in Colorado accept for 4 years when he served in the US Air Force. His first motorcycle was a Benelli Buzzer mini bike that he and his brother purchased together one summer from JC Pennys Auto Center. Ever since then he has been hooked on motorcycles and has almost always had at least one. When he was a kid, his Dad had BMW motorcycles. That is where Mike got his introduction to BMW s. His first BMW was a 2002 R1150R that his wife got him for his birthday. He was instantly hooked on BMW s and now owns four. He enjoys all types of riding all year around, from off-road (two of his bikes are GS s), and on-road, short trips, long trips and long distance challenges and especially enjoys overnight camping rides. He has completed several Iron Butt rides. The longest is the Bun Burner Gold; which is 1,500 miles or more in less than 24 hours. Mike s latest accomplishment is his solo ride from Denver to Dead Horse, Alaska and back to Denver in under 10 days riding approximately 7,350 miles. Mike has been a member of the BMWMCC since He has enjoyed all types of riding with the Club. It has introduced him to ride with many different personalities and to different places. Because he enjoys the BMWMCC and its members so much, Mike is honored to continue serving the Club in his fourth year as Vice President. BMWMCC.org In the Wind 3
4 2016 BMWMCC Board Jeff Kelley Secretary Jeff, a Colorado native, has served as Club Secretary since He currently rides a K1300GT and enjoys the many Club activities. Jeff is proud to continue serving as a Board member of the BMWMCC. Frank Ricci Treasurer Frank, a Finance executive and Bostonian living in Conifer, moved to Colorado six years ago to combine his passion for the outdoors (climbing 14ers), with his love for riding the twisties and sport-touring. He has served as club treasurer for five years and rides a 2006 Honda Interceptor VFR800, as well as a 1st gen, 1985 version (a Beemer in the family keeps him legit!). He s a former amateur sports car racer and track instructor and thoroughly enjoys an enthusiastic ride. BMWMCC.org In the Wind 4

10 Colorado News WILDERNESS BILL THREATENS COLORADO OHV RECREATION As printed in AMA Magazine H.R. 3336, the Colorado Wilderness Act of 2015, introduced by U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), will designate as Wilderness 32 areas totaling 715,000 acres. This federal Wilderness designation will make the land off limits to off-highway-vehicle enthusiasts. It is important to note that none of the proposed Wilderness in DeGette s bill is located within her district. This means the residents living in these areas those who are most impacted have limited options to voice their disapproval, because they are not the sponsor s constituents. We need your help to stop H.R in its tracks. You can your representative immediately by entering your information into the AMA form located at and clicking the red Submit button. A prewritten message is available.
