4 Another Great R ally... Well, another summer is about to end and another TOR behind us. Those of you who know me are probably aware by now that when I need to find my happy place I immediately start planning some type of party or event that will no doubt involve good food, music and lots of people. As the rally chair for this year s TOR, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for allowing me to spend a great deal of 2013 in my happy place. And to all of those who volunteered to join me there, I sincerely thank you. With the help of Bob Bushta, our Paonia coordinator, along with other members of the teen center board, based on the many comments by those in attendance, I believe we provided our guests another wonderful rally experience. We hope you will join us again next year in Paonia, July for the 2014 TOR. 8 Thanks Everyone! Thanks for once again putting on such a great rally! I have now gone to TOR 22 times, all at Paonia. Bear with me while I tell you a story. I ve been using a Travel Chair at rallies for nearly three decades. Two years ago at TOR, while sitting around with my friends, the duck fabric seat gave out with a loud RRRIPP! plunking my keister down on the ground. I continued to use the ground, any un-used chair and/or a picnic table bench for the remainder of the rally. I then acquired one of those inexpensive umbrella folding chairs and used it last year and this year until one of those complex plastic corner knuckles had a come-apart, as usually happens with those things. Again, this happened while sitting around with my friends. I didn t hit the dirt this time though, as one part of the busted knuckle rested against the other and, with the assistance of some tie-wire, continued to function OK, as long as I sat down carefully and didn t wiggle around. Since I had now lost two camp chairs at TOR, my friends and I all agreed it would be good and proper if I won the Kermit! I never gave that theory much hope though. I ve been trying to win a Kermit at rallies ever since they were introduced, without any success. Two longtime friends at the rally were part of the group and they both have Kermits. They jovially said they would give me the chair if one of them had their name drawn. One of those friends is named Walter Czech. I still have to pinch myself when I recall the events of last Saturday evening! Photo attached. I am on the left, with a Big Grin! - Jim Mason, Wichita KS BMWMCC.org In the Wind 8

10 Lake City Ride Howdy all, For those wishing to ride as a group we will be meeting at The Fort parking lot just north of US 285 at Hwy 8 (toward Morrison) with a planned departure time of 9:00 am on Friday, Sept 6th. Of course, if you wish to make your own way there s nothing wrong with that; just mention you are with BMWMCC when you get down to the Elkhorn RV Resort. The owner at Elkhorn Resort said he would honor last year s price of $20 but only for cash dollars. Credit card transactions will incur a higher fee; I neglected to ask how much. For those so inclined there are cabins for rent. Although that weekend is the end of their season and traditionally slow, if you want a cabin I recommend calling down there to reserve one. Their number is You can get additional info off of their website Hope to see you there! Kerry Miller kerrymmiller@comcast.net (cell) Lake City Trip Details Here is a little info going out to the riders joining us for this trip was the inaugural of this event. This year, as last, we will be staying at the Elkhorn RV Resort, which has hot showers, a fire-pit, and nice camp area. With the scenic area, fun and varied riding available in the area, it is a terrific weekend trip. Lake City sits at 8,761 with a temperature range that averages 70 for a high to a low of 36 in September. Many of the passes in the area are in excess of 10,000 so, riders/campers should pack and dress accordingly. BMWMCC.org In the Wind 10

11 Campout Weekend Referring to the map at the left, all distances are approximate. Blue Line Outbound: US 285 to Buena Vista; Cottonwood Pass (lunch at Alta?); US 50 through Gunnison; CO 149 to Lake City. Yellow Line Return: CO 149 to Gunnison; US 50 to Canon City; CO 09 thru Florissant Fossil Beds; US 24 to Woodland Park; CO 67 to Sedalia; US 85 to Englewood. Green Line Saturday pavement trip: Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Montrose, back to Lake City. Red Line For those craving extra distance: Durango to Cortez, by Telluride and rejoins the Green Line at Ridgeway. The Outbound/Return trips are 280 miles each. The Green Line trip is 385 miles. The Red Line is 145 miles, but only adds 85 miles to the Green Line route. Much of the mountain riding is over switchback roads where 45 mph is a reasonable speed. Riders should plan accordingly in regards to time management. The Alpine Loop (west of Lake City) is one of the most scenic rides (drives) in all of Colorado and has options to drop down into Silverton or Ouray. Those wishing to ride this route are well advised to ride down on a GS or similar bike. For additional info on the Alpine Loop visit Photos from 2012 Lake City Weekend BMWMCC.org In the Wind 11

12 Photo Taken Where? Yes, I know you ve seen lots of these pictures before. They come from the poorest of countries all around the world. Those folks have no other transportation than a bike, if even that. Not exactly the intended use but... necessity is the mother of invention. So, here s the picture. The question I was asked was, Is this a Harley? I have a different question. Where was this picture taken? The answer: July 2013 on I-70 near Idaho Springs! No lie! Well, at least he has a helmet on. Submitted by Jeff Burns The records continue to fall under the wheels of BMW Motorrad USA HP Race Parts and CTEK Power USA-sponsored Valerie Thompson s S 1000 RR. A five-time motorcycle land-speed record holder and racing team owner, she is a member of the Mojave Magnum 200 MPH Club and the Texas Mile 200 MPH Club (earned with backto-back 212 mph runs). When she s not on the track, she s making appearances to promote her team sponsors and to support and inspire kids with charitable organizations such as HopeKids.org. While actually catching her on the track may be next to impossible, you can catch up with her latest activity on her Facebook page. BMWMCC.org In the Wind 12
