6 Ride R eport & Photos Peak to Peak Annual Ride By Jeff Burns Mark Zimmer was leading the ride and I was running second, fairly close behind him.we were on the P2P highway when Mark hit a deer. More correctly, a deer hit Mark. We were doing about 60 mph. The deer came from the left side of the road and was running almost perpendicular to and across the road. He probably was focused on Mark in particular but he had to have seen all of us coming. It looked to me like he realized he was going to run into Mark s bike so he tried to leap over the back end of the bike, but didn t clear it. The deer was airborne when the deer s thighs ran into the outside of Mark s left sidecase. The leading edge of the case did not hit the deer, or the deer would have gone down. Instead, the impact was hard enough to spin the deer s back half forward in our direction of travel. It was pretty impressive really. In a very acrobatic move, the deer landed still running and got all the way across the road. I had seen the deer and was on the brakes before he even started across the road. Even so, I went by the deer just as he was reaching the right shoulder. He looked like he was running off but I was by him quickly. The guys behind us had a better look at the animal and reported that his back leg was injured, but that s all I know about that. Mark NEVER stopped or even slowed down. I thought that was kind of odd, but we all just kept on going. When we got to Estes Park, I went to look at Mark s bike and he asked me what I was looking at? I told him, You hit a deer and he just said, What? He had no idea. He remembered a thump but thought he had hit a rock on the road. Only then did he notice some light scrape marks on the painted sidecase. Pretty unusual event. Fun at FIBArk in Salida BMWMCC.org In the Wind 6

7 Tour of Honor Sites By Randy Bishop Photos by Randy Bishop and Rick Harvey. After a 5-day ride last year through southern Utah (UT-12), Nevada (NV-375 and US-50) and Death Valley, my cousin Rick and I decided it would be a good idea to ride to the seven 2013 Tour of Honor ( sites around Idaho this year. And that we should visit other ToH sites as we passed through Utah and Wyoming. A plan came together and off we went on May 24th. Day one took us through Glenwood Springs, Vernal, Price, and on to Provo. Highlights along the way were another veteran memorial in Rifle, riding curvy and scenic US-191 from Duchesne to Helper, and the picturesque field of US flags by the Veterans Memorial Monument at Spanish Fork. The next day started with a winding route through the mountains and along a large lake to Midway where a spiral gravel road took us to the top of Memorial Hill. In addition to seeing a nicely done veteran memorial we enjoyed a terrific view of the mountains all around the area. Next up was the Alpine Loop (UT-92) that was one of the tightest, twistiest roads I ve been on. Lots of first and second gear riding as we made it past Sundance, up to the summit, and down to Timpanogos Cave National Monument. Not exactly a short cut, but well worth the extra time it took. Then we started laying down tracks with stops in West Jordan and Tremonton, Utah, and Mountain Home and Meridian, Idaho, on the way to our visit with another cousin in Nampa, Idaho. Our third day took us up US-95 on mostly empty highways though farming country and small towns. Just north of New Meadows we started a winding 60-mile descent along the Salmon River which has more water in it than any river in Colorado. With mountains and forests on either side, blue skies and occasional views of picturesque old railroad trestles, it was a relaxing and great ride to White Bird Hill, an 8-mile, 8-percent grade up into more farm land with fields of yellow canola. After stops at a veteran memorial at Lewiston and the Nez Perce National Historical Park, we retraced our scenic route back to New Meadows, rode through some cold rain and wind, then followed ID-55 through McCall (an Idaho version of Estes Park) and to the SPC John Borbonus Memorial in Cascade. Day five took us over scenic mountain roads to Jackson, Wyoming, and the John Colter Memorial. Then across Togwotte pass with clear roads but with snow all around and chilly temperatures. After a warm and sunny stop at the Fremont County Veterans War Memorial in Lander we headed back north to see the memorials in Thermopolis and Cody. From there we pressed east following US-14A across the Big Horn Mountains where again it was chilly and windy with lots of snow beside the road. But what fun riding those twisty roads as they climbed and then descended the mountains. And in spite of the weather, the views were unbeatable. We made it to Sheridan by 8 PM, got photos of the Sheridan County Veterans Monument and then while waiting for dinner swapped travel stories with six guys from Vancouver that were also riding around the West. Our last day of the trip took us to the Chris LeDoux memorial in Kaycee and the USS Barbel Memorial in Evansville. We then headed south to Laramie on a tiring ride in very strong side winds that sure were making all the huge windmills on either side of the road to generate some kilowatts. We made our last stop at the Lincoln Memorial summit east of Laramie for photos of the Purple Heart Trail Marker, and then headed for our homes. During the six days we visited one Tour of Honor site Colorado, six in Utah, and all seven in Idaho and in Wyoming, and certainly appreciated those and paying our respects. Along the way we saw a ton of scenery and rode a bunch of very curvy roads we might have missed had we not been on the way to those ToH sites. We wanted to see Idaho, and we sure did, along with miles and miles of other Western highways and byways. See my Spotwalla trip map at php?id=67cc517f270a04d98 Continued on Page 8 Photo Below: US14 West of Sheridan, WY On our fourth day we rode ID-21 northeast through the mountains on a road that reminded me of Deer Creek Canyon, but it kept going like that for about 60 miles. Very entertaining. We arrived at Challis right after a veteran memorial service had ended where a local reporter covering the event then interviewed us, resulting in our photo appearing in the Challis newspaper. We then traveled straighter and drier roads to Arco for a stop at the grave sites of two of my great-aunts, then continued to the WWI memorial in St. Anthony and the Vietnam memorial in Idaho Falls. 9 Site Photos By Randy Bishop To the left is a photo I pulled off a page from the The Messenger (ID) newspaper. Rick and I arrived there just as a memorial service finished and we ended up being interviewed by Todd Adams, Reporter for The Messenger, who coincidentally grew up in Evergreen, CO. Rick s bike is a Moto Guzzi Stelvio. He also has a 2004 BMW R1150RT and an Aprilia Caponard. On the trip we ended up collecting one ToH site in Glenwood Springs, six in Utah (the 7th was way south in Cedar City), all seven in Idaho (good for a 2nd place ToH trophy in Idaho), and all seven in Wyoming (good for 1st in Wyoming). We saw a ton of scenery and rode a bunch of very curvy roads. We wanted to see Idaho and we sure did! Rick was with me for the Utah-Idaho- Wyoming part. I did the Nebraska ride a couple weeks earlier on my way to and from Omaha to see my folks. Photo Below: ID BMWMCC.org In the Wind 9
