I saw Dolores cleaning the stove. John Revelle and Karen donated a new vacuum to cottage #5, the electric broom was inadequate, and the new vacuum has a long hose so that the ceiling cobwebs can be easily removed. Please remember that cottage #5 users are responsible for leaving the cottage clean. Thanks to Jim Estep for washing the cobwebs off of the B-Dock lights and slaying spiders to make B dock presentable to our visiting guests. The Crab Feast was indeed a Feast - thanks to Terri and Greg Edwards, and helpers Cathy Schrader and Jim Test. Many members and guests were happy picking crabs. We had two special guests attend the Crab feast: Freddy Olverson, from Olversons Marina, and Larry Marcoux. Saturday was the first time Freddy has visited Corinthian YC. I am looking forward to Labor Day when Occoquan Yacht Club (OYC) will return for their annual visit to CYC. We will be having a Crab Feast/Pot Luck on Saturday, August 30 th. In addition, David Norris will be entertaining pool side, starting around 6:30 pm. Come join the fun! I would like to thank the nominating committee, as they are diligently seeking members to serve on the 2015 CYC Board. Please volunteer. Corinthian YC is truly a lovely location, and I have to commend our forefathers who purchased this piece of property. We are all proud of our location and heritage. Paula Hajos, Commodore Membership Meeting Saturday, September 20 th at 10:30 am Italian Night Cocktails 5 pm, Dinner 6 pm 1 Around the Grounds To my fellow Corinthians: Things continue to improve around the club as members and our contractors fix problems and make improvements. Thanks to two members, Chuck O Brien and Dick Teachout, who completely rebuilt the float used for hull work on our boats. They replaced most of the rotted wood on the bottom of the float and repainted the entire float. Some may know the float was partially sunk before they hauled it out and completely refurbished it. Ray Mercure proposed an entirely new solution for fixing the roof leaks in Houchen's cottage. His solution is to raise the pitch from the front edge of the roof to 16 feet back, using 2 X 10 beams, which, combined with installing new plywood across the beams, should be sufficient to eliminate the water pooling that occurs now, and eliminate the leaks. He plans to replace the current 1/2 inch thick plywood sheets with 5/8 inch sheets which will be less likely to bend and further guarantee the elimination of any water leaks. With the installation of 16 foot, 2 x 10 beams, thicker plywood, new tar paper and shingles, this should eliminate any new leaks. Along with Ray s proposal, he provided an estimate for the labor and material costs. Before any decision is made, we plan to get another proposal/estimate from D & S who did the work on the clubhouse. An electrical problem was found in the men's room behind Houchen's cottage. None of the lights would turn on, but the A/C ran fine. A check of the electrical panel revealed no blown breakers. Ray was advised of the problem and found it was the GFI (Ground Fault Interruptor) and reset it. Earl Waesche, VC

CYC Events The CYC Crab Feast held on August 16, 2014 was truly a FEAST and everyone had plenty to eat and drink. The weather was good, the company great, and everyone seemed to enjoy the evening. Corinthian Yacht Club was the perfect setting for this Crab Feast as the sun set over Smith Creek. The Crab Feast event was hosted by Terri Edwards, Cathy Schrader and Jim Test. Terri continues to lead the way with coordination and planning for CYC social events and the Crab Feast was no different, thank you Terri! Cathy and Terri did a great job of shopping for and preparing the food with help from Cindy Dahl and Ann Foster. Paul Kellham supplied the 6 bushels of Crabs and Mary and Brian Winsor prepared the tables for crab eating in the Bean room and in the yard. Special thanks to Eran Edwards and Mike Jackson for working the grille and cooking 120 Hot Dogs and helping with clean up! Also thanks to Ray for setting up the tent and picnic tables. Thank you Chuck Cipriotti, Dolores Derrington, Larry Marcoux and Commodore Hajos for bar tending. Additional thanks goes to Jim Estep for, once again, having the bar stocked and operating. The clean-up was a group effort led by Jim Test, Earl Waesche and Ann & Don Foster. The Crab Feast is a great Corinthian Yacht Club annual tradition and when we have surprise entertainment from John Wittman on the Piano (the singing was fun but not so good) it makes this traditional event even more special. Cruisin We are still actively looking for a Fleet Captain to complete this season and one for next year as well. If you re interested in helping to plan cruises, and have some fun on the water, this is the way to get started! Hello to all Corinthians Our account balances have been slowly growing. As of August 15, 2014 they are as follows: Operating: Heritage: Entertainment: Dollars and Cents 2 $NN $NN $NN I am happy to report that most of the dues have been collected with a few stragglers still out there. Insurance Our officers and directors liability policy was renewed with Chubb. The large marine liability policy comes up for renewal this October. I supplied additional information to our broker to obtain the renewal quote from Ace Insurance as well as competitive bids from other companies. We will analyze these to obtain the most cost effective policy. I will keep you posted. Budget - As promised I prepared an attached updated budget comparing year- end budgeted numbers with actual numbers that have been annualized. Looking at the income, the yearend budget amount on the left column is almost equal to the annualized amount on the right column. So we are on track there. Looking at the expenses, the actual vs the budget amount is also almost the same. This, requires some clarification. As part of the budget, I have allowed $NN for the year to cover unforeseen expenses. Since all of the expenses add up to the budget number, this means we may actually use the full $NN of unforeseen expenses this year. Most of the overrun is in maintenance. There have been quite a few projects completed in the first part of the year, many having to do with frozen pipes and some with the clubhouse renovation. This of course will not occur in the last half of the year, so we may make up some ground here as the year goes on. This will be the item to watch. I will do this again at the end of the third quarter when the numbers will be even more accurate. At that point the board will have to look at our fee structure to make sure we are still covering everything. We will know much better if any changes are needed when I get the third quarter numbers. Please feel free to study these numbers and me with questions or comments. That is all for this month. Now back to the boats. Your CYC Treasurer, John Wittman Membership/Secretary The August Membership meeting began with a moment of silence in memory of Martha Walters, wife of Ron Walters. A brief tribute was made by the Commodore. Martha passed away on August 9, 2014 at Johns Hopkins Medical Center. Please remember Martha and Ron in your prayers. Barbara and Mike Walter were guests of Jim Test at CYC s August Crab Feast. Barbara and Mike have cruised to CYC as members of MOTA in the recent past. The Walters are considering CYC as their new homeport. Barbara and Mike bring a boatload of experience with them as each is a past

commodore of Patuxent River Sail and Power Squadron. CYC is looking forward to processing a membership application from Mike and Barbara. Speaking of membership and honors, the Board elected to make long standing member Audrey Lewis an Honorary CYC member. Audrey has been a member of CYC since Congratulations to Audrey! Sally Dressel, Secretary, CYC Several CYC families are in need of thoughtful support as they or a close family member is ill. Please say a prayer for the following families: Ron and Judy Ryland, Eine and John Wittman, Cathy Schrader, John and Sally Dressel. Also, include in your prayers: Ron Walters, Bud and Nancy Schatz, Elizabeth Marcoux, John Krisko and Pat Krisko. Around the Docks (Measurer) Hurricane Season. It is time for members to review the CYC rules section, pages 6 & 7, of your membership book. High winds and high water are the primary risks to our boats and our property. I will address some of the things we can do as boat owners to reduce the damage caused by these threats. Wind: Reduce windage by lowering masts & Bimini s and removing canvas. Stow cushions and electronics below deck. Secure coolers, fishing equipment, & anything that can become a projectile. Few canvas covers can withstand 75kt winds. Trailered boat s wheels should be chocked and drain plugs removed. High Water: Boats in slips are vulnerable to wind and high water damage. Small boats can be put on trailers (recommended). We have several tall boats that could be damaged by high water as the surge and tide lift them up, into the rafters. Not only will the boats be damaged, but the dock roof could be lifted and blown away. These boats will have to be moved out of covered slips. We have 5 slips on E dock, 1 slip on D dock, and 2 on A dock tee. E dock is not well protected from west winds; we had significant damage to E dock and a member s boat in a storm. Other options include anchoring out and haul out. Some members have made arrangements with local marinas for storm haul out; our local creeks are good hurricane holes for anchoring. Boats that remain in slips will require additional mooring lines and chafe protection. Move your boat forward in the slip to insure your stern does not rub against the dock as the boat rises; a rise of 4-6 ft above normal is not uncommon. Tie lots of lines to lots of posts; I use as many as 15 lines to create a web. Your regular lines should be relaxed and chafe protected; the supplemental lines should be strong and fixed to alternate hard points on the boat and dock. Get a mental picture of your boat riding in the slip with knee deep water on the dock; where would your lines be? 2014 Transient Schedule: 20 Aug-20 Sep. Doyles, 34 PDQ Power Cat. Cancelled. Labor Day. OYC. 12 boats. Host: Commodore Paula Hajos. Another great month of sharing our facilities with visiting yachts. Colonial YC came in on 26 July with10 boats hosted by PC Edwards. The Marine Trawler Owners Association (MTOA) came in 27 July with 12 boats hosted by Liz Riesman. Our Crab Feast on 16 August was joined by 10 boats from Lodge Creek YC and 6 boats from Westmoreland YC. I want to thank all of the dock hands for their help; without their assistance, I would have looked like a bumbling idiot. There was one boat on C dock that needed lots of help; I think it took five of our strongest, healthiest members several minutes to get them squared away. It absolutely had nothing to do with the scantily clad blonde lady on the boat; I ll swear to that. From the MTOA visit, we have had two requests for membership packages. One couple, Mike and Barbra Walter, presented their application at the Crab Feast. This is what Jim & Vaughn Quince envisioned when they put together this outreach program for CYC. Larry Marcoux reclines in his new home in Bradenton, Florida, with the CYC Burgee above his head. Larry is in the process of re- 4 locating himself, Elizabeth and his business to a warmer climate. Since Elizabeth s stroke, Larry has now found excellent full time care in Sarasota for Elizabeth. To reduce his own stress, Larry bought a house in Bradenton after selling their rental in McLean. He still retains a residence in McLean as well, but is establishing his full time residency in Bradenton. Larry is on the water (as you can see), and has a boat lift in the back. He welcomes one and all to visit and enjoy the view, the water and the weather. Larry is a long time visitor to the Ridge, MD and Chesapeake Bay area, a big fan of Maryland Crabs, and all things boating. He hopes to purchase a center console in the near future to cruise and fish around Bradenton, Sarasota and Tampa Bay. August 16, 2014 Wedding Bells for Pat and Sylvia Shier! Bluefish are finally here in some good numbers trolling by Camp Brown right on the edge of the outer most crab pot row. Venture across to the Southwest middle grounds and larger blues are present along with Spanish mackerel and a few large Red drum. Stripers are still not making a presence. Perch and Spot at Ragged Point. (Courtesy of Capt. Gary Sacks) The wedding day came. They are married now and their hearts are filled with love and joy.

But no one was there. How could this be so It came without invitations!... it came without flowers!... it came without a party or a cake!... without bridesmaids, or groomsmen, or even family for heaven s sake! These things don t make a marriage. It still came. Somehow or other it came just the same. You may be puzzled or think it strange, but don t be sore. Maybe weddings don t have to come from a store. Maybe marriage can still mean just as much or more. As much as we love our family and friends we decided to have a very simple wedding with just the two of us before God on August 16, 2014 at the Galilee United Methodist Church in Sterling, Virginia. We did miss being able to share this special occasion with all of those who hold such special places in our lives. Yet at the same time to dedicate our focus on each other on this day without the common stresses of celebratory flair also made the day mean that much more. Patrick and Sylvia Shier National Hurricane Center Old Dominion Boat Club Capitulates: After years of pressure-including lawsuits and threats of eminent domain-from Alexandria s forces for revitalization of the city s waterfront, members of the Old Dominion Boat Club in July gave final approval to the sale of their King Street property to the city for $5 million. The Club s headquarters building and adjoining parking lot have been a prominent feature on the Potomac since the 1920s. recently, though, the city has been after the property to provide more public access to the river as part of its scheme to spark Old Town s rebirth as a lively maritime hub. Public opinion on the project has been divided and often heated. The boat club will establish its new headquarters in the nearby Beachcombers building.* ODBC from the Potomac River side Schooner Virginia on the block: She s beautiful, sleek, fast and up for sale. The 126- foot schooner, Virginia, a recreation of the last Virginia pilot schooner on the Chesapeake, cut her summer schedule short as persistent funding problems led her owners, the nonprofit Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation, to give up on the fight and seek a buyer. The Virginia, which receives no state or municipal support, ran into financial difficulties not many years after her launch in She was deactivated for a couple of seasons, but relaunched for Norfolk s OpSail in She continued her educational programming along the East Coast until the July announcement by the foundation. For more see * All, Schooner Wharf, Virginia *Source: Chesapeake Bay Magazine I attended a community meeting on Thursday to gather information and represent the interest of the Corinthian Yacht Club. The meeting 5 was held at the Vlandingham Farm off of Calvert Bay. This farm has a beautiful view that is sure to be disrupted by the proposed aquaculture lease. See the attached documents for an idea of what is being proposed by JD Blackwell (a local business person). Essentially, the State of Maryland is trying to promote aquaculture to add to the economy of Maryland and to help clean up the bay. This is known as water column farming because the oyster beds are not on the bottom of the water but are suspended on large floats and cages. I did a quick search and came up with 2 photos of variants. I also generated a rough map to show the location in relation to the Corinthian Yacht Club. The meeting was attended by many (approximately 35) including Roy Dyson (Maryland State Senator for St. Mary s County), John Bohanon (Delegate and member of Steny Hoyer s staff), Joe Salvo (owner of Point Lookout Marina), and many local farmers and land owners. The agency answering the questions was the Army Corp of Engineers. The Army Corps of Engineers must approve the lease request in addition to an approval process by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The opinion of the community was overwhelmingly negative toward the proposed size and location of the farm. It started as a lease request for 110 acres, but has subsequently been reduced to 80 acres and now approximately 40 acres. The primary concerns seemed to be: 1. Obstruction to Navigation 2. Obstruction to other wildlife activities (Fishing, Duck Hunting, etc.) 3. Community impact of having such a large commercial / industrial operation so close to shore 4. Movement of traps when storms occur (beached traps) 5. Rights of farm owner / operator to retrieve traps from property owner s beaches

It was requested that any interested community members (Corinthians) included should send written (and hopefully drawn) information about how the proposed location and size would negatively impact the activities they conduct on the water. The address for the local group head that is organizing against the permit is: 'Calvert Bay' Deb Raley is one of the leaders. People can also report their comments and concerns to the Army Corps of Engineers: Laura is collecting comments. CYC may want to comment as a whole, or on an individual basis.
