Joe Monroe, our new member, is recovering from surgery to remove pressure on his brain. Trustees, Winsor and Storey, have volunteered to help move the Monroe s CJ from Deltaville to CYC. Claire has been keeping me up to date and is very grateful to receive the help with the boat. The September membership meeting featured an in depth, open discussion on our club policy concerning float-ins of visiting yacht clubs. For over an hour we talked and listened to the objections to our current policies and procedures. The yacht clubs we discussed are not traditional YCs. They have an organization, but they do not have facilities. There is no opportunity for reciprocity. The discussion centered on the benefits we receive, financial & good will, versus the cost to our members. We collect dock fees and allow these groups to use our facilities. Our transient dock income, this year, is over $7,000. The cost to our members is the loss of exclusive use of our pool, club house, and other facilities, as well as the additional labor that our members must provide to feed and clean-up after these groups at our events. We fed 110 people at our crab feast in August; at least 40 of those were float-in guests. It was clear to me that a 1 majority of the members want to curtail our organized float-ins on event weekends and holidays. The outcome of the September board meeting was a resolution to not allow organized float-ins on event weekends and holidays except with specific board approval. We look forward to further discussion and additional ideas to refine our policy regarding this issue. Thanks to all of those that participated in the discussion. Spotlight on the Board. Marv Storey s service to CYC as Trustee has been invaluable. He saw the need and offered to audit our dock lockers. He started by correcting our terminology from dock box to the more nautically-correct dock locker. Marv determined which lockers were being used by which slip holders. He and Andi repaired the doors and reattached numbers. I think they may have killed dozens of wasps in the process; good riddance. The next step involves attaching name plates and removing locks from the three unidentified lockers. Marv has added to our meetings by being the level headed person that calms down the group and gets the discussion back to the subject. Statesman that he is, Marv summarizes the issues and offers solutions that are acceptable to both sides. Thank You, Marv Storey. 2 SPECIAL NOTICE: With a heavy heart and a tear in my eye, I tell the members of CYC that Past Commodore Ron Ryland crossed over the bar. Ron Ryland has been a member of Corinthian Yacht Club since He served as Commodore in Ron thought of CYC as a place where people could join together in fellowship and share their enjoyment of being on the water with friends. Ron fought a valiant battle but succumbed to the ravages of cancer. He was highly respected and much loved by our membership. We will all miss him. Our condolences go out to Judy and the Ryland family. The Ryland family are using the CYC club house as a gathering place. A memorial service will be held next week, more specific information about this will be sent out later. James Test Commodore Around the Grounds/ Vice Commodore Around the House and Grounds: It s been a great summer and we can all look forward to how beautiful fall is on Smith Creek and around the Club. Thank you for keeping the Clubhouse, Bathhouses and Pool areas clean. And keep those suggestion coming wherever you see a need around the Clubhouse or grounds. The property is in good condition (relatively speaking) but there are a lot of maintenance and project items lining up. We are evaluating the condition of the Seawall between A & B docks and potentially working to develop a repair design. We re looking to finalize a draft design for Clubhouse kitchen remodel. We have a new Air Conditioner being installed to service the Bean Room and considering new AC units for the Clubhouse bedrooms. And we continue to look at new flooring options for the Bean room and carpeted areas. Thanks to all who are providing feedback for each of these efforts. We are better together! Better get your fill of swimming in the CYC pool now because as soon as we have multiple days of weather dictating we will close it, or by Oct 1 latest. Payments are being received and reservations being confirmed for the Clubhouse rooms and Cottage #5 rentals. The 2015 calendar on the CYC Web Site ( will be updated periodically by John Carey to reflect 2015 reservations. Please keep in mind Cottage #5 and the Clubhouse rooms are for rent by CYC Members only. If you have plans to accompany a guest at CYC please let us know and we will work with you to process your request. Reservation requests should be ed to me at Edwards_Greg28@msn.com. After we verify availability and collect the rental payment then reservation information is passed on to John Carey who will post it on our Website. The reservation is not officially scheduled until the check made out to CYC is received at: Greg Edwards 7114 Camp Alger Ave. Falls Church, VA Clubhouse and Room Rates; Bean Room Rental $150 per day Cottage #5 $65 per night $400 per week # 5 Supplemental Pet Fee $10 per night Commodore s Room #1 $55 per night Vice Commodore s Room #2 $50 per night Rear Commodore s Room #3 $40 per night NOTE: Check-In 2PM, Check-out 12:00PM when necessary. Member/renter is responsible for cleaning upon checkout. Let s go for a boat ride. See you at the Club. Greg Edwards, Vice Commodore 2 CYC Events/ Rear Commodore Forget about going to your local beef house for prime rib. You cannot beat the prime rib served by CYC Chefs last Saturday night. There is no doubt that we have great cooks within our membership. The beef was perfectly prepared and cooked by Darrell and Paul over hickory on the grill rotisseries. In the kitchen you had our hosts busy at work. Cindy and Don Dahl, Sally and John Dressel and Dolores Derrington preparing and cooking the appetizers, sides for the dinner and homemade desserts, including Julie Shier s cookies. Truly a good meal enjoyed by those attending. Your hosts for the evening would like to acknowledge all the help provided by Jim Estep, Jackie Herbert, Mary Johnson, Cathy Schrader, and Eine Wittman, plus those who helped out where they could. It is the extra help that makes for a successful evening. The evening was topped off by music played by the Mosby Territory aka Will and Alona Williamson. We had a good crowd who stayed late and enjoyed their talent. Later they were invited for an impromptu jam session that went on way after midnight in Cottage #3. The October 10 th event is a planned Pot Luck dinner hosted by the Shiers; Julie, Tom, Sylvia and Pat. Now is the time for all the Chefs to prepare their specialty. You will not go away hungry. There will be a variety of dishes and plenty for all to enjoy. See the attached flyer for details. Be sure to indicate what type of dish you plan to bring. There is a section on the CYC invite where you can comment to write in your dish selection. Entertainment will also be pot luck so if you have something to offer now s your chance. Looking forward to having another good CYC evening at our club. Mark your calendars for the oyster scald and dinner on November 7 th. Plans are underway for this all day annual CYC

3 event. Look for a flyer with all the details in the next newsletter. Harriet Bean, Rear Commodore Cruisin Fleet Captain On the Sunday of Labor day weekend a couple of CYC members made a small mini cruise to Tall Timbers for the BBQ and boat burning. The Altman crew and the O'Brien crew anchored just off the beach on a beautiful evening to watch the boat burning and fireworks. Calling all Corinthians! On Saturday October 17th, a day cruise to Cobb Island. A nice ride to lunch at Shymansky's, and a great ride home. Armantina II It is with great sadness that we report the passing of a Good Ol Egg that shared many Corinthian owners. The last name on the boat was Armantina II, and resided on A-Dock. A respectful boat burning was held at Tall Timbers to return the boat to the sea. She was a proud and mighty vessel for many years. Boat Burning at Tall Timbers Please contact me at rivahpra@yahoo.com or (240) Dollars and Cents/ Treasurer Hello to all Corinthians The bank accounts as of 9/11/15 are as follows: Operating Account Heritage Account Entertainment Account Trust Account 3 (Approximate) It should be noted that, as approved by the board, has been recently transferred from the Operating Account to the Trust Account. These numbers reflect this transaction. Transient Slip Rentals as of 9/11/15 It is worth noting that last year for the year we had a total of. The higher amount this year is due to the higher amount we are now charging for a transient slip. Last year it was only $35 and this year it is a more realistic figure of $50 per night including electric. Cottage and room rentals as of 9/3/15-4 th Quarter Invoices The invoices for the 4 th quarter will be going out the end of this month. Each quarter there have been several people sending in their checks to the Bean Road address. Please send them to our PO Box as indicated on the invoice. It is Corinthian Yacht Club PO Box 31 California, MD When sending them to Bean Road there is a chance they could get lost as the mail is not checked regularly there. In fact one of our members had to issue a new check as the first one was lost somewhere at CYC. Also, anyone that is having work done for CYC should make sure the vender also sends the bill to the PO Box address. Various bank accounts and funds Questions have arisen regarding the various bank accounts and funds that we have. What are each of them for? Here is a summary to clarify the matter: The Operating Account This is the main checking account where all maintenance bills, utility bills and taxes are paid from. It is this account that we closely track on our budget spreadsheet. The Heritage Account Major capital improvements, those projects or large equipment that is not immediately expensed but depreciated over time. For instance, the new commercial refrigerator we bought this summer was paid for through the Heritage Account. We will be needing a new air conditioner in the Bean Room. This will be funded through the Heritage Account. Each year the board decides how much money should be transferred from the Operating Account to the Heritage Account. This amount for the past few years has been for each year. We usually do this at the beginning of each year. So, if we don t spend more than per year on capital improvements, we are on track. The important thing is that we average no more than per year. For instance next year we may be doing some extensive kitchen renovations along with new flooring in the Bean room and other areas. If all of this were to cost, then it would be hoped that in the next three years we would make no major capital improvements. In this way we are still only averaging per year. The Entertainment Account This is the bank account that collects the money for the various events, and pays the bill directly related to those events. This account is in the hands of the Rear Commodore and basically funds itself from the event revenue. A small profit on each event is typical, and at the beginning of the next year excess money is transferred out of this account into the Operating Account or Heritage Account, wherever the Board sees fit. The Trust Account All of the above accounts are controlled by Board members. The Trust Account is not. The Trust Account is the Members account. Chuck Cipriotti is the caretaker of this account. No money can be drawn out of this account without membership approval. This gives the membership additional safety with their money. Generally large projects like bulkheads, new cottages may be funded or partially funded from this account, but again only at membership approval. For instance, in 2022 we have a loan due which will have a balloon payment of. This could be a good use for this money either paying all of it or part of the balloon from this account. And since it is the Trust Account, the membership would have to vote on its use.

4 The Commodores Capital Fund This is a fund that was set up a few years ago where the membership was given the opportunity to pledge an amount of money as they see fit that would then go into the Trust account. There are several members that have done this, most of them paying an amount quarterly as part of the quarterly invoice. All of these contributions will be fully satisfied with this next quarter invoice. The board and membership, if it wishes, could discuss continuing this program with new pledges if it is felt beneficial to the club. I hope this sheds some light on the matter. I would be glad to answer any questions you may have on this. Just send me an . That s all for this month. Let s look forward to some fall boating! John Wittman, Treasurer Membership/Secretary Cool brisk mornings, pleasant breezy afternoons, Fall is in the air. The hint that the close of boating season is fast approaching; not what boaters wish for! The Commodore, Cathy Schrader, John Dressel and I attended the St. Mary s County Chamber of Commerce Business after Hours on Wednesday, August 26 th. We mingled with local business leaders and a past President of the Chamber. We were able to put our newly minted CYC business cards in the fish bowl for a chance at a door prize and more importantly into the hands of contacts! After being House-bound for several months, Mary Niebuhr was able to make the trip to CYC for the membership meeting and Prime Rib Dinner. It was great to enjoy Mary s company at CYC! Welcome back! The following Corinthians continue to need our emotional support, John Revelle, Terry Kivett, Liz Reisman, Dick Teachout, Joe and Clare Monroe. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Respectfully submitted, Sally Dressel, Secretary, CYC Tom Martin is recovering from his hip replacement surgery, and doing well. He has some other minor issues, but is in pretty good shape for someone his age. Several CYC members and families continue to need your thoughtful support: Chuck Clark, Edith Deming, Judy Ryland and family, Martin Russell, Elizabeth Marcoux, Cathy Schrader, John and Pat Krisko, and Nancy Schatz. Reminder to send notes for Liz Marcoux to Liz s caregiver, Florence at: PrvtHomeCare5@aol.com Please include Elizabeth's name in the subject line, as Florence cares for several people. Our prayers and good wishes continue in your direction. Around the Docks (Measurer) No slip changes. No more float-ins this season. The board approved the return of The Great Harbor Trawler Association (GHTA) 6-9 June We are looking for a sponsor for this mid-week visit of 9 boats. This is a dignified group of experienced cruisers that showed respect for our club and its members. Hurricane season is here. Boats in covered slips are at the most risk for damage from surge. A storm surge of 3 or more could cause damage to radars and Bimini s. More importantly, a rising boat could lift the roof off our pier. Have a plan to move your boat out of a covered slip. No additional nominations shall be accepted after the November meeting. Election of 2016 officers and other Board members will be held by club members actually present at the December meeting. Please take time to thank all those that have graciously agreed to volunteer their time and efforts by serving on the CYC Board. This is the bedrock of why CYC has been such a terrific place for 100+ years. My personal belief is that every member should take a turn, sooner rather than later, serving on the Board. You will appreciate your club even more. Think about it for next time.

Please mind your speed. Thank you. Rear view of the Wellcraft NOVA Past Commodore Dr. Clarence F. Schatz, Jr. (better known as Bud ) passed away on 17 September. Bud was a World War II veteran, serving late in the war in the Battle of the Bulge. Fortunately for CYC, Bud returned from that war and established his dental practice. He helped start multiple organizations, including a chapter of the Kiwanis. Our current membership needs to remember in particular that he was instrumental in locating the current CYC location, and convincing the membership to move to this new, beautiful location. He and Nancy have been strong supporters of CYC Another Courtesy: Please try to distribute your trash in the dumpster near B-Dock. If you have other trivia you would like to share, links to include for your fellow boaters and CYCers, please send them along. I also accept photos and other info to include. 5 Another view Great job, Dick!
