1 WELCOME CLUB OF HENDERSON COUNTY JUNE 2018 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Hi Everyone! Fun things are going on! Be sure to not miss out! A group of us really enjoyed our tour of the Veterans Healing Farm! What they are doing is amazing. They really appreciated the sheets and mattress pads from all of you. You will hear more about how we can continue to help out further in this newsletter. Maybe some of you can help serve on Saturday, May 19 th at their Boot Camp. They have 15 or so people coming for a three-day event from all over the United States to learn how to set up a farm of this sort in their area. On this same day we will be meeting at 4:30 to carpool to Tryon to watch a show at the Equestrian Center. We plan to have dinner down there and then watch some of the competitions. Should be a nice evening out! In June several things are going on that we can get together and enjoy! On the 2 nd is the Annual Ice Cream Social. It is held at the Town Hall across from the post office in Flat Rock. Several of us will be meeting there for the music and ice cream. The price is free, and you just bring a chair and a smile. On June 16 th we will go on a Pontoon Ride on Lake Lure. After a relaxing hour on the lake we will have a nice dinner in a restaurant in the area. Then, on June 19 th, we have our next Coffee and Conversation at Lorie Alexander s house. Read on for more information on these and other activities going on in the next month or so. You can also be putting on your thinking cap. In June we will have our Annual Game Day. When you fill out the sign-up sheet you can let us know what game or games you would like to play. Also, be on the lookout for a Childhood picture of yourself. We are having a Potluck meal, and everyone will have to guess what picture belongs to whom prizes will be involved If you ever have any questions or suggestions never hesitate to let me know. I love hearing from you and I look forward to seeing you all at one thing or another. By the way, the new roster is out! If you need a printed copy just let me know. Have fun! Susan
2 HUGE THANKS to Betsy Tibbs! After 14 years of keeping us all informed, Betsy has decided to pass on the reins of producing the Newsletter to Sarah Hutton. We have all loved Betsy s easy banter and her tongue-incheek sense of humor. She first started with typing, printing, folding and mailing the newsletters each month. With much work it has evolved into what it is today. On her own, Betsy took a college class on Web design, so she could set up our web-site. With the web site up and running she has kept us happy and connected by each month handling all the e- blasts, membership rosters and newsletters. Her company and valuable input has already been sorely missed at the board meetings. From all of us at The Welcome Club Thank you for coming into our lives and enriching our days! For the past several months Betsy and Sarah have been working together on the Newsletter. This month Sarah is writing the newsletter with Betsy close by. Thank you also to Sarah for taking on this daunting task! Thank you again, Betsy, we look forward too many more years of valued friendship. 3 SCAVENGER HUNT Update! And a good time was had by all! Lorie does it again! Lots of fun was had at the Scavenger Hunt! First we met at the Court House and then used clues to lead us to the 18 different stores that participated. A big thanks to the different shops that helped make this day fun. 10 of the shops went above and beyond and gave us some neat prizes. When visiting downtown Hendersonville be sure to stop by these places and thank them. The ten shops that had special prizes and give aways for our group were: Spice It Up, Vessel, Wag, Three Chopt, High Country Furniture & Design, Art on 4 th, A Walk In The Woods, Carolina Mountain Artist Guild, Woodlands and Cafe Crepe Mania. We then had a great lunch at West First. They easily accommodated our whole group with a smile. Be sure to not miss our next special event!!
4 GUIDED GARDEN TOUR of the NC ARBORETUM JUNE 15 9AM - 12 Learn a little bit about the history of the Arboretum, the culture of the Southern Appalachian region, and see the beautiful blooming flowers. The tour takes about an hour and twenty minutes to cover the five cultivated gardens, then a break for lunch and some time to peruse the gift shop. COST: admission to the Arboretum is free, but there is a fee of $14 per vehicle for parking (we ll carpool from Hendersonville and share the cost between driver & passengers in each car). Lunch at the Bent Creek Bistro (on-site at the Arboretum) runs appx. $8-$12 for soup & sandwich-type meal. CONTACT: Gerri Fore gerr.h.fore@hotmail.com
5 CHARITY MATTERS 2018 A group of Welcome Club members and guests spent a wonderful May afternoon recently touring the Veteran s Healing Farm. The tour was a second attempt after being rained out on the original tour date of April 15 (could it be the curse of tax day?) John Mahshie, founder, enthusiastically shared his vision where veterans are given a new mission in life through tending the farm and receive high quality organic produce and flowers as the first fruits of their labors. The farm, which John started having no experience in gardening or farming, now uses state of the art agricultural techniques combined with a passion for making the world a better place. Fruit trees, garlic, asparagus and even hops were some of the early crops seen in this pastoral setting, along with sheep and bee hives. There are many opportunities to volunteer at the Veteran s Healing Farm. If you or someone you know is interested in looking into volunteering on an individual basis, information is available at The Welcome Club will be officially supporting the Veteran s Healing Farm in a volunteer capacity by contributing to the potlucks planned for veterans and their families at the farm throughout the summer. We know from our Coffee and Conversation events what great cooks we have! The dates of the potlucks are June 16, July 21, August 18 and September 15 all 5 to 9 pm. If you would like to contribute a dish to the first potluck in June, please contact Carol Dembeck, Charity Liaison, for details. Additionally, folks are needed to help serve lunch at the boot camp on Saturday, May 19 (no need to bring food). If you can volunteer for an hour or so, let her know that as well. Thank you so much for supporting this great cause!
