1 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE WELCOME CLUB OF HENDERSON COUNTY MARCH 2018 Hi Everyone! If we think Spring, will it happen?! Let's hope March brings in warmer weather and good health! We have all kinds of fun things in the works. Some are still to take place before March even gets here. Like the Coffee & Conversation on February 20 th. These Coffee's are always nice and a great way to meet more of our members. Be sure to let Peggy know you want to be a part of this relaxing morning spent with fun people and good food. In March our different interest groups will be off and running and then on Thursday, March 8 th I hope to see you at the Library between 2 and 4. We will open with some quick announcements and then you can move from table to table to see what is in store for the year. There will be sign-up sheets for one- time things like Egg Decorating on March 27th, Game Day with Soup/Salad and Desserts and an International Food fest of our own making. There are some tours planned for places like the Sierra Nevada Brewery, Bold Rock Cider, a Spa Day or a visit to the Salt Cave, lunch and a visit to the Greenville Zoo. You will also be able to hear more about new groups forming. Flick Chicks plan to enjoy lunch and afternoon movies together the list goes on... So mark your calendars! but I would hate for you to miss out on the fun things The Welcome Club has to offer. Have a great month and I look forward to seeing you. All the best, Susan MARCH BIRTHDAYS 1 Mar Carole Repici 6 Mar Pam MIstina 9 Mar Cathy Veal 10 Mar Sherry McMakin 11 Mar Peggy Hamlin 11 Mar Laverne Pace 17 Mar Joyce Adams 27 Mar Elaine Moyzis Our new roster will be coming out so if you have not paid your dues for this year, be sure to do so! Not only would we miss you,
2 enjoying dinner out and supporting this worthy cause. There is also going to be a dedication ceremony at the Farm on July 7 - more on that to come. CHARITY MATTERS 2018 The Veterans Healing Farm is located off Rte. 64 West on a beautiful parcel of family land owned by founder John Mahshie. John, an Air Force veteran, and his wife Nicole founded the farm in 2007 and spend nearly all their time and energy keeping it organized and running. The main need at this time is financial, with a goal of hiring at least one person to help with the administrative duties. This would give John and Nicole some much needed support and would enable the Farm to expand in new directions. Already planned for this year is a series of boot camps this summer at the Farm where vets can come from other locations around the country to learn about organic gardening and organize similar farms. There is not a lot of need for volunteer help since a main emphasis of the Farm is for veterans to heal by working the land. That said, they do have occasional open days for volunteers from the community to come and help tend the fields. Your Board recently voted to start off the new year by making a donation from the Welcome Club in the amount of $1000. Stay tuned throughout the year for more information about visiting the Veterans Healing Farm and supporting their mission. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Charity Liaison, Carol Dembeck, at dembeckcarol@gmail.com Here s a picture of the Whist group at one of their recent meetings looks like fun and the food looks good too! Farm Burger in South Asheville is sponsoring the Veterans Healing Farm on March 22 from 4 to 8 pm. 10% of the proceeds from the restaurant will go to the Veterans Healing Farm. Please consider

8 FOOD AND FRIENDS Food with Friends is about food, fellowship and fun. Couples who like to cook, gather in members homes for a theme meal four times a year. The hosts determine the theme and entrée and the other couples (3-4 couples per home) bring the accompaniments as simple or complex as they want. In the summer all couples meet for a picnic and in December all share a soup meal. Themes have included Greek, Italian, Irish, and Cuban. Possible themes for this year might be make-your-own-pasta, an omelet party or fondue. If you are interested in joining, contact Lynne Cigal (home ) or lcigal37@gmail.com. You may wish to sub at one of the homes and then decide if you would like to continue as a regular member.
