6 Reports SAFETY OFFICER/s Brett Chirio Ride in formation. The staggered riding formation allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to manoeuvre and to react to hazards. The leader rides in the left third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-file formation with a minimum 2-second following distance is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or manoeuvring room is needed. Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. You don t want handlebars to get entangled. Periodically check the riders following using your rear view mirrors. If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this procedure, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up. If you re separated from the group, don t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup. Don t break the law or ride beyond your skills to catch up. For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants. If a rider leaves during the ride, the rest of the group should re-form the staggered formation by crisscrossing into the next vacant position. Although it would seem more efficient for the column directly behind the missing rider to move up, we do not recommend it because passing another rider within a lane can be risky Robert Dwyer Hello and good evening everyone. I would like to talk about tyre pressures and why it's important. Looking at a typical motorcycle tyre, the obvious point of difference is that the motorcycle tyres have a curved profile as opposed to a typical automotive tyre. The significance of this is that the patch of tyre that actually contacts the road surface is fairly small, several square centimetres. Of course this varies with tyre and bike and this several square centimetres of contact area also varies with lean angle and weight distribution. Are you accelerating, breaking or just in normal riding situations? How much of this section of tyre depends on design, weight and tyre pressure. Now the boffin s at XYZ Tyre Company stress a lot when designing and specifying tyres and setting tyre pressures they are not chosen randomly, Which is why it's important. Too low a pressure and the contact patch will not maintain surface contact. In fact distortions in tyre profile causes very poor tyre to road contact performance usually resulting in a not so good a day for rider and bike. Under inflated tyres give a sluggish unresponsive feel to the road and generally causes more wear and tear on the tyre walls due to excessive flexing. Also increases the chance that the tyre bead may unseat from the rim. Not a good look. Over inflated tyres, cause less of the contact patch area to actually contact the road surface bringing with it poor traction higher wear rates. Over inflated tyres also provide a stiffer ride which in turn increases the effects of bumps and divots leading to loss of control. Okay so how the tyres should be correctly inflated? Good question I hear you ask. Typical servo tyre inflator s are generally not the most accurate and at times begrudgingly provided at best. Besides that tyre pressure quoted is cold no not winter but certainly not after a 20K ride to the servo. So best advise get a compressor, filter water separator and a decent tyre gauge, Guys that's a good reason to get a compressor, right? Alright practically you'll be fine if the servo is only a couple k's away and you go straight there. But do get a decent tyre gauge to check your actual pressures.

16 Safe Riding
17 Safe Riding GUIDELINES FOR SAFE RIDING ON HOG RIDES There will be a briefing before all rides so arrive at the designated start point half an hour before departure time. Pay attention to the ride briefing given by the Road Captain. If in doubt - Ask. If you are experiencing any difficulty that might affect others, let the Road Captain know before departure. Always fuel up before the start of the ride. Make sure your bike is in roadworthy condition. Check this before you leave home, not 5 minutes before the ride time. Check all lights, battery, tyres, etc. As a general rule, the group will depart and arrive as a group. Unless arranged prior to departure, do not pass the Road Captain. Use only one lane of a multilane highway. Follow the lead of the Road Captain as to which lane to use. Ride in a staggered formation except on narrow roads where you should follow in Indian or single file. When a rider leaves the group (e.g. turning off to go home), or changes position in the formation, the remaining group will switch lanes using indicators to signal intention, and restore the staggered formation. When overtaking, maintain your overtaking speed until those overtaking with you have enough room to pull in behind without having to break suddenly. If you intend to travel at a slower pace than expected on the ride, position yourself towards the rear of the group and not in the front or the middle. New riders should take up position in front of "Tail End Charlie" for the first few rides. This is at the rear of the Pack. Keep an eye on the rider behind you. If they stop unexpectedly, you stop and determine the problem before proceeding. The rider behind you is your responsibility. An exception to this rule is "Tail End Charlie" - there should be no one behind him/her. Most importantly - "RIDE SAFE AND HAVE FUN"
