1 4 Ruge Street Proserpine QLD 4800 Subscribe: Phone: June 2017 Date Claimers CARE CARNIVAL On Thursday 22 June the school will hold its Care Carnival. Students are to come dressed in their house colours or sports uniform to participate in the best day of the year! Principal Perspective I continue to be astonished by the immense talent of our students at Proserpine State High School. Each week I hear of more personal achievements and successes that students have accomplished at a regional, state or national level. We should never forget what great students attend Proserpine State High School. Congratulations! Jack Handley Jack Handley was selected earlier this term as a regional representative on the Indigenous Student Ambassador Network (ISAN) program. This is an exciting project that will connect exceptional and inspirational Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in state schools from across Queensland. Furthermore Jack has now been selected as one of only twenty-six students from across Queensland to attend a five day study tour exploring the contribution of indigenous people in the creation of the ANZAC legend. This is an amazing opportunity that will further Jack s leadership skills. Karrah Lea Vinnicombe Karrah Lea Vinnicombe who is one of only fifteen students selected in the state to attend the inaugural Global Citizens of the Future Tokyo Study Tour in June This program targets 15 high-performing Year 10 students with an opportunity to travel to Tokyo, Japan for a 12 day in-country experience. The Department of Education and Training, in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Board of Education, is providing eligible students with an offshore opportunity to see real world examples of the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) and partnerships between schools and industry. Karrah Lea will travel to Tokyo where she will experience school life and be given the opportunity to visit places of cultural and historical interest and to see how STEM subjects are taught in Japan.

2 Ben Cornish And Taine Brown Congratulations to Taine Browne and Ben Cornish who have been invited to join Ignatius Park College in Townsville for the Belgium-England-Scotland and Ireland Ruby Union Tour September/October The boys recently competed in Brisbane as part of the North Queensland School Boy s Under 18 Rugby Union Team at the Queensland Titles. The tour begins in Belgium where the team will honour fallen soldiers in Ypres. From there they travel to England to play the first of five games then continue on to play in Scotland and Ireland. Keyra Smith Congratulations to Keyra Smith who has been chosen to represent the Under 14 Queensland Girls Indoor Team at Mackay during July This is an amazing achievement and we are very proud of Keyra. National Representation Congratulations to Sebastian Heatley, Jack Wilson, Jacob Farrell and Imogen Tulk who have qualified to represent Australia in the All Japan Kyokushin Championships, held in Osaka, June This is once again an outstanding achievement and we wish the students all the best of luck. COMMUNITY SPIRIT I was very proud of our students studying Certificate II in Rural Operations through the Queensland Agricultural Training Colleges. Wonderful community spirit was shown by the students recently when assisting the Whitsunday Show Society with maintenance following Tropical Cyclone Debbie. Great community values were displayed throughout the day. Thank you to all involved! FAREWELL SANDY NICHOLLS From volunteer to valued staff member! From Scientific Officer to Happy Retiree, Sandy Nicholls has seen the lot! Sandy commenced working at the school in 1975, working to support the Science Faculty throughout her 41 year career with the School. Sandy has seen the school grow to the vast population of over 1000 students it is today. Sandy has opted for a low key farewell but in her typical generous fashion, as a parting gesture, all farewell funds raised for her retirement gift were donated to the Student Council organised Biggest Morning Tea (Cancer Council) where over $1100 was raised. On behalf of the school community, I thank Sandy for her magnificent contribution and commitment to the Science Department. Best wishes for a happy, rewarding and well deserved retirement. Mr Don McDermid Principal Deputy s Bits THE NEW SENIOR ASSESSMENT AND TERTIARY ENTRANCE SYSTEM IS COMING!!!! The Queensland Government is introducing a new senior assessment and tertiary entrance (SATE) system for students who enter Year 11 in 2019 (current Year 9 students). This new system will include: a new senior assessment model that combines school-based assessment and an external assessment for all general subjects. a move from the current Overall Position (OP) tertiary entrance rank to an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), as used by other Australian states and territories. Staff at the school are already heavily invested in being part of the new system, and commencing in second semester and continuing through to 2018, will undertake professional development about the new quality assurance processes and to familiarise themselves with the new syllabuses. These reforms are going to be the biggest change to senior education in more than 40 years, so the school is committed to ensuring that families have time to understand and prepare themselves for the new system. We will provide further information and resources throughout Semester 2 to enable parents to learn more about the changes and how they will affect their students. 2

3 More information about the transition to the new system is available online on the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority website at the link below. Mr David Gallagher Deputy Principal Early Childhood Studies UNDER 8s BIG MORNING OUT Mermaids, fairies, leprechauns, cheetahs and pirates were featured in the Year 11 and 12 Early Childhood Studies obstacle course activities conducted at the recent Under 8s Big Morning Out. Children delighted in testing their skills as they made their way through multiple obstacles to reach the end of their quest. The obstacle courses were part of an interactive story that each group of senior students created with the focus to develop fine and gross motor skills of children. Children at Under 8s revisited the obstacle courses multiple times having enjoyed the experience the first time. boat about the Proserpine River and its crocodiles supplied by Mr Steve Watson. The students are now writing reports about the crocodile habitat incorporating their field observations and a survey of the local community with a view to making recommendations regarding future crocodile management plans. An interesting result of the survey, is that while most respondents have seen crocodiles and support their protection they don t know how to be croc wise. Our class would like to recommend that readers visit the Queensland Government Department of Environment and Heritage website below. We know first-hand that there is more out there that bites than mozzies. crocodiles be_croc_wise.html PREMIER S ANZAC PRIZE COMPETITION Any students interested in nominating for the Premier s Anzac Prize should come to see me in A Block staffroom before the holidays. Only two students can be nominated from the school. Mr McDermid will make the final decision on nominees next term. Sports Section NQ VOLLEYBALL Congratulations to the Year 11 and 12 Early Childhood Studies students for providing both an entertaining and educational experience! Humanities and Social Science SENIOR GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION Senior geography students went on the Whitsunday Crocodile Safari last month to study biodiversity at Goorganga Plains wetlands. The students thoroughly enjoyed sighting the crocodiles in the wild and listening to the commentary on the From the 1st to the 4th of June, eight students from the Proserpine State High School and two from Townsville attended the Queensland School Sport Years Volleyball State Championships at Caloundra, Sunshine Coast. It was amazing to see so many of the Proserpine State High School students get chosen for this event. The team didn t get a lot of training time in due to Tropical Cyclone Debbie but they made up for it over many weekend and weekday training sessions. They were up against a lot of tough competition down there but they played extremely well and should all be very proud of themselves as this was also a great experience for them as well. Many thanks to Coach, Steven Moore and Manager, Tova Cernusco for the time they put in training the team. Congratulations on your efforts boys. You did North Queensland proud!! 3

Student Council Updates THE BIGGEST MORNING TEA On Friday 9 June, the Senior and Junior Student Councils hosted the Biggest Morning Tea (at big lunch!). In the lead up to the event four picnic blankets were auctioned off, allowing the highest bidders to be served in a VIP area and to be waited on. The line stretched from the Hall to near the Manual Arts buildings and we estimate that more than 300 students were able to be served. In total we raised $ Of course this event wouldn t have been possible without the work and assistance of many people; the student councils would like to thank everyone who donated food and their time cooking in the lead up to the event as well as people who helped to run the event on the day and everyone who made a donation including Sandy Nicholls whose donation was a beautiful gesture. We honestly could not believe the enthusiasm and support received from our school community and are incredibly humbled and blown away by everyone s involvement. Many thanks from the Senior and Junior Student Councils. See yah when I m looking at yah.
