Chairman s report THE PAST YEAR HAS SEEN A LOT OF PROGRESS AT QPCU. AS WELL AS CONTINUING TO PROVIDE GREAT SERVICE TO OUR MEMBERS, WE HAVE EMBARKED ON A NUMBER OF MILESTONE PROJECTS, INCLUDING ENTRY INTO THE MORTGAGE BROKER CHANNEL AND SETTING A PATHWAY FOR QPCU TO TRADE AS A BANK. This year has been one for deepening relationships and partnerships with our membership and community, and looking to the future to determine how we can improve our service to our members and community even further, through business operations and of course our sponsorship, donations and volunteering. 4
2015 QPCU EVERYDAY HEROES AWARDS Our second Everyday Heroes Awards (EDH Awards) was a resounding success based on the feedback we received from those involved. The 2015 EDH Awards were held at the Queensland University of Technology for the first time and hosted by Channel Nine s Melissa Downes (who did an outstanding job). Our partnership with Channel Nine meant the awards received unprecedented coverage through both traditional and social media channels. I am confident that the profile and legacy of the awards will continue to grow long into the future. DEEPENING RELATIONSHIPS AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH OUR MEMBERSHIP AND COMMUNITY STAYING STRONG INTO THE FUTURE This year the Board voted unanimously to support a resolution at the 2015 Annual General Meeting (AGM) which would set QPCU on a path to trade as a bank. The Board sees this resolution as a key driver in the future growth and strength of our organisation. If approved by the membership, QPCU will be able to follow the lead of several large credit unions in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia and apply to the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) to trade as a bank. Our credit union was founded to serve those who serve the Queensland community, our Everyday Heroes. Moving to bank status will allow us to strengthen this commitment even further. As our organisation grows, we will be in a better position to support our members and community through sponsorships, donations and volunteering. QPCU has a proud history of innovation and adaptation to changing market conditions with an unwavering commitment to personal service. We understand your unique needs and more growth will mean more investment into our service and accessibility for members. We look forward to providing information about the outcome of the AGM special resolution in due course. JILLIAN STEINKAMP Chairman QUEENSLAND POLICE CREDIT UNION LIMITED ANNUAL REVIEW
CEO s report IT HAS NEVER BEEN MORE IMPORTANT FOR QPCU TO STAY RELEVANT TO ITS EXISTING AND PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS. THE FINANCIAL YEAR HAS SEEN US CONTINUE TO INNOVATE AND CREATE MARKET-LEADING SERVICES AND PRODUCTS ACROSS OUR BUSINESS. Our 2015 Member Survey provided valuable insight into the views and behaviours of our members and eligible non-members when it comes to accessing financial services. One of the most significant findings from the research was the importance of staying up-to-date with technological advances and improving access to our products and services. Of the member and non-members surveyed, 84% said that internet banking was the most commonly used and important service channel, followed closely by smart phone apps and mobile banking websites especially for those under QUEENSLAND POLICE CREDIT UNION LIMITED ANNUAL REVIEW
QPCU SMART APP We listened to that feedback, and early last financial year introduced the first QPCU Smart app, allowing our members to bank on the go. Members can check account balances, transfer funds, pay bills, locate ATMs and utilise several different financial calculators all through the QPCU smart app. Since its launch, the smart app has been downloaded by more than 7,000 members and with new updates and improvements in store, we look forward to seeing this number rise even further. RESPONSIVE WEBSITE We also launched our new responsive website which allows members to use our website more easily and more comfortably from a variety of devices including smart phones, tablets and laptops. The website optimises content based on the type of device being used. This significantly improves the user experience without the need for a separate mobile or tablet site. ONLINE ACCOUNT OPENING Another exciting service now available to members is our online account opening capability. On Call Savings, NetLink Direct Savings, QPCU Bonus Saver and Christmas Club Accounts can all be opened through internet banking on the QPCU website. The process is easy, secure and only takes a few minutes. Since this function was launched, 500 accounts have been opened online. Our investment into technology underpins our commitment to provide outstanding service to our members, on the platforms which they are using in their everyday lives. We are excited to bring more functionality and improvements to our digital banking assets in the near future. S&P RATING Part of growing stronger for the future has also meant undertaking a number of important initiatives to ensure our growth is sustainable. This financial year, QPCU obtained an Issuer Credit Rating with Standard and Poors for the first time. This rating has enabled us to commence issuance of Negotiable Certificates of Deposit, raising $9.4m during the financial year. Through this process QPCU has been able to raise funds at a more favourable price than from other funding sources. QUEENSLAND POLICE CREDIT UNION LIMITED ANNUAL REVIEW
BROKER CHANNEL In we set the foundation for entry into the Mortgage Broker channel. Since then, QPCU has further cemented its place in the home lending market by partnering with one of the largest providers of mortgage broking services in the country. Australian Finance Group (AFG) has over 500 mortgage brokers servicing all areas of Queensland, giving QPCU members around the state access to our unique range of products and services through a local expert. This partnership will be critical to the future growth of QPCU and ensuring we continue to provide the best personal service to our members. We consider AFG the ideal partner for us because they understand Queensland and have a great connection with police, fire, emergency, health workers and public servants. RBWH FOUNDATION PARTNERSHIP The 2014/15 financial year also saw a partnership formed between QPCU and the Royal Brisbane and Women s Hospital (RBWH) Foundation. By providing access to knowledge, skills and technology that may not otherwise be available, RBWH Foundation ensures the RBWH s doctors, nurses, researchers and allied health professionals are able to provide patients with the highest level of care. Peter Treseder (RBWH CEO) 8 QUEENSLAND POLICE CREDIT UNION LIMITED ANNUAL REVIEW
We re reinforcing our partnership with RBWH Foundation by sponsoring and supporting a number of their community events and fundraisers. QPCU attended and sponsored the launch of the Royal Alumni and have helped to facilitate many generations of RBWH doctors and nurses to network and connect. QPCU also attended the RBWH s most prestigious and important fundraising event, the Right Royal Affair. The event brings together representatives from the medical community, former patients, politicians, philanthropists and business leaders to raise money for the advancement of health care in Queensland. We look forward to continue building our relationship with the RBWH Foundation in the months and years ahead. We ve seen innovation right across the business in the last financial year, but our driving principles will always stay the same. Our team has never been more focussed on putting members best interests first and providing outstanding service to our unique community. We have a lot of exciting developments in the pipeline over the next 12 months and beyond. I look forward to sharing those with you as they come to life in the next financial year. 12 Community proud QPCU HAS LONG STANDING PARTNERSHIPS WITH VARIOUS ORGANISATIONS WHICH SUPPORT OUR MEMBERS AND THEIR FAMILIES. WE ARE COMMITTED TO BUILDING LONG TERM RELATIONSHIPS WITH ORGANISATIONS THAT CAN MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY OVER TIME. POLICE LEGACY We are very honoured and excited to have an ongoing partnership with Queensland Police Legacy who provide invaluable support to families of deceased and terminally ill Police Officers. Each year QPCU provides a $15,000 sponsorship package to assist in the preservation and fundraising activities of Queensland Police Legacy. BIKE 4 BURNS This is an annual charity bike ride organised by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) where participants ride long distances over one week to raise funds for the Royal Children s Hospital Burns Research Group. Along with fundraising for the Royal Children s Burns Research Group, the charity ride is a part of the QFES wellness initiative which aims to enhance the health and fitness of QFES personnel, improving their occupational skills in responding to incidents effectively and safely. This year the team of 50, including 3 QPCU staff members rode 800km from Gladstone to Brisbane and raised over $300,000. QPCU was proud to donate $5,500 and we look forward to continuing this support for many years to come. 10 QUEENSLAND POLICE CREDIT UNION LIMITED ANNUAL REVIEW
KJM FOUNDATION The KJM Foundation came to life as a memorial to Kenneth James (Jim) McPherson who through his strong commitment to training, education and research embodied the qualities of Queensland Ambulance Service Paramedics compassion, accountability, respect, ethics, responsibility and sensitivity. QPCU has supported the KJM Foundation for a number of years, as it contributes directly to improving patient care through pre-hospital research and learning activities for QAS. We re very excited about growing a strong partnership and supporting such an important foundation well into the future.
