The evocative World Press Photo Exhibition 2018 shines the spotlight on the most compelling and controversial moments as captured by the world s best photojournalists; a not-to-bemissed experience attracting thousands of visitors in an annual pilgrimage to Brisbane Powerhouse each year. Australia s legends of comedy, Lano & Woodley are back together after a 12 year hiatus, taking the stage with their own unique brand of comedy in FLY, a tribute to the pioneers of flight The Wright Brothers. There s also a superb lineup of music to fire up the senses. Lior & Paul Grabowsky unite for one night only in August, country music star Kasey Chambers celebrates her new album Campfire and in At Last: The Etta James Story, seasoned songstress Vika Bull shares the story of this soul legend. Plus experience ground-breaking digital performance including the visionary French work Hakanaï a live generated graphic illusion through dance, multi-media instrumental artist Kaki King and the Australian Virtual Reality Film Festival. 5 WELCOME 045 Artistic Director s Message Round and round, up and down Through the streets of your town Brisbane is a different town since the seminal local band The Go-Betweens released this iconic love song to our city in 1988: a time when there was a greater exodus of young creatives and Brisbane was seen as a sleepier soul. I said changed, right? In June, we shine a spotlight on the story of this generation of Brisbanites and the city that shaped them, told through the songs of The Go-Betweens. I am so excited about this new Australian musical, The Sound of A Finished Kiss. It is a look into Brisbane s unique subculture in the final decades of the twentieth century and a celebration of one of Australia s best song-writing collaborations in Grant McLennan and Robert Forster. In contrast, winter is also home to our Digital Powerhouse season, where we re shining a light on artworks that live at the meeting point of creativity and technology. The centrepiece of this season will be the astounding international digital dance work Hakanaï, which we have brought from France for an exclusive season. This major work has been seen in arts centres around the globe, and here it is matched with events such as Kaki King in concert; local gaming industry celebration GO423; retro console installation Go Out and Play; and the return season of the Australian Virtual Reality Film Festival. In 1989, Brisbane Powerhouse was handed back to Brisbane City Council and the seeds were sown for the venue we are today, nurturing and supporting emerging artists and our seasoned creatives; a vibrant artistic hub remembering where we came from but pushing the boundaries of what we can become.

12 11 THEATRE Letters to Lindy by Alana Valentine Filled with humour and heartbreak, this stunning work by award-winning playwright Alana Valentine (Parramatta Girls, Head Full of Love) explores the public s relationship with one of 20th century Australia s most iconic figures, Lindy Chamberlain. The story captivated a nation. A mother accused of murdering her child, her claim that the baby was taken by a dingo denied and discredited by zealous police and a flawed legal system. The media circus, the rumours, the mob mentality and a nation s prejudices laid bare. Over three decades, from baby Azaria s death to the final coroner s report, the public wrote more than 20,000 letters to Lindy Chamberlain. From sympathy to abuse, letters from children and letters from those who have lost a child, these letters traverse the gamut of human response to Lindy s story. Letters to Lindy draws on this correspondence, as well as extensive interviews with Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton herself, to create an enthralling, moving and long overdue dialogue between Lindy and the nation. 36 35 THE BRIDGE The Bridge is a Brisbane Powerhouse and Brisbane City Council $300k four-year funding initiative designed to support local performers and producers in order to grow the presenting capacity of Brisbane s performing arts sector. The initiative is divided across four financial years, with selected shows aligning to Brisbane Powerhouse s programming vision of being a home for living art, ideas and experiences. In its first year, , The Bridge is dedicated to supporting festival artists in Wonderland Festival and MELT: Festival of Queer Arts and Culture. In the subsequent years, , The Bridge will support projects across the genres of independent musical theatre, digital and tech-based artists, and circus. Created in response to Brisbane City Council s Creative Sector Survey, The Bridge will give Brisbane creatives the necessary time and support to present shows of a professional standard. 37 MADE AT BRISBANE POWERHOUSE 36 Made at Brisbane Powerhouse Some of the most fun we have at Brisbane Powerhouse comes with supporting the creation of new projects. This month, we have had two works in the building as part of creative developments both being made by and with local artists. Blending theatre and virtual reality, strongly influenced by science fiction and horror genres, Afterlife invites the audience into a research lab, where they can experiment with technology that is creating the seances of the future, with spirits summoned into a virtual world that they can collectively visit. Of course, as the audience move between virtual and tangible worlds visiting the pasts of those in the room, the line between realities starts to blur in terrifying ways. A collaboration between theatre makers, coders and technology artists, Afterlife will be a first for Australian theatre, with Brisbane as the leader in the integration of virtual reality into live theatre. Black Box is the new work by Paul Hodge, who most recently was a co-creator of the musical Joh for PM. It tells the untold true story of Australian David Warren, inventor of the black box flight recorder, as he battles to reckon with his past and change aviation history. A fascinating one-man musical, Black Box overlays music, recordings and other characters to create the soundscape of Warren's life. Expect to see all of them on a stage very soon!

LOCATION CITYCAT: Bewteen mid-april and late 2018, the New Farm Park ferry terminal will be closed due to an upgrade. BUS: The 195 and 196 stop at New Farm Park. Take a short, enjoyable stroll along the riverside path from the CityCat jetty. If you want to give your legs a bit more of a workout you can catch the 199 bus, which stops on Merthyr Road within walking distance via Lamington Street. BICYCLES: It s cool to be green! Bike racks are located outside the Stores Building (beside the car park) and Brisbane Powerhouse. A CityCycle station is also located at the entrance to the car park on Lamington Street. TAXI: If you need a taxi it s as easy as using the free taxi phones located in the foyer opposite the box office. Our collect and drop off area is in the car park beside the Stores Building. CAR: We have 140 free car parks on site via Lamington Street. After 4pm a link road opens to New Farm Park where there are more parking spots available. The parking fills up very quickly during busy shows so if you do plan on driving we recommend that you arrive early and have dinner at one of our two restaurants before the show. WHEELCHAIR: Wheelchair parking is available on-site via Lamington Street with lift access from the car park level beside the Stores Building.
