Whitsunday Regional LGA covers the areas Bowen, Gumlu, Proserpine, Airlie Beach, Cannonvale, Daydream Island, Hamilton Island, Hayman Island and Collinsville and is located approximately 225 kilometres south of Townsville. 2 Current as at 21 st May 2015 Rural Coastal Fringe Sub-Region Department of Education and Training INTRODUCTION The North Queensland Department of Education and Training (DET) Region is comprised of 16 local government areas of Boulia Shire, Burdekin Shire, Burke Shire, Carpentaria Shire, Charters Towers Region, Cloncurry Shire, Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire, Flinders Shire, Hinchinbrook Shire, McKinlay Shire, Mornington Shire and Mount Isa City, Palm Island Aboriginal Shire, Richmond Shire, Townsville City and Whitsunday Regional. This snapshot is of the Whitsunday Local Government Area, it can be viewed as a document on its own or as part of the Rural Coastal Fringe Sub-region profile. The information contained in this document is intended to provide a snapshot in time of the demographic, industry, employment, education and training information with the purpose to inform the requirements for education and training sector services to the region. Information is to be used as stated in the disclaimer at the end of this document. Responses will support the Queensland Government Training and Skilling Programs including VET Investment Plan and Skilling Queenslander s for Work. Information includes a range of statistical data by local government area where possible and regional intelligence gathered by Training Queensland, North Queensland region and stakeholders. Labour force data will be updated quarterly, all other information will be updated in June each year. Regional intelligence will be updated on a regular basis, any updates will be recorded by current date in the header of this document. POPULATION Whitsunday Regional estimated resident population as at 30 June 2014 was 34,211 persons or 0.72% of 7 Queensland. The population of Whitsunday slightly increased by 0.7% between 30 June 2013 and 2014 compared to Queensland s annual growth rate of 1.5%. The average annual growth rate from 2009 to 2014 was 1.4% compared to 1.8% for Queensland. Population projections indicate that by 2016 the expected population will continue to increase to 35,830 persons. 3 Current as at 21 st May 2015 Rural Coastal Fringe Sub-Region Department of Education and Training LABOUR MARKET In the December 2014 quarter, Small Area Labour Market statistics in Whitsunday indicated an unemployment rate of 9.2% compared to Queensland rate of 6.4%. 9 This has increased compared to the September 2014 quarter of 7.8%. 6 Current as at 21 st May 2015 Rural Coastal Fringe Sub-Region Department of Education and Training TRAINING Whitsunday Regional Apprenticeships and Traineeships In-Training 15 As at June 2014, there were 353 apprentices and 292 trainees in-training with a work and home address in the Whitsunday Regional local government area. Of these, 49 were school-based. The number of apprentices in-training has decreased from 410 apprentices in May 2013 to 353 apprentices in June Significant decreases occurred in engineering- general 23, construction-general 16, automotivegeneral 12 and utilities-electrotechnology 6. A significant increase occurred in the construction-civil industry 10. Food processing-baking and furnishing-general industries remain the same. The number of trainees in-training significantly decreased from 492 trainees in May 2013 to 292 trainees in June Significant decreases occurred in business-general 93, hospitality-general 27, retail-general 16 and community services-aged care 15. Slight increase occurred in retail-personal services 4, communications-information technology 3 and transport and distribution-warehousing 3. Primary industryagriculture and transport and distribution-marine remain the same.
