Burdekin Shire covers the areas of Giru, Brandon, Ayr, Clare, Dalbeg, Home Hill, Millaroo, Alva Beach, Airville, Inkerman, Jarvisield Mt Kelly and Osbourne. Burdekin Shire is located approximately 80 kilometres south of Townsville. Burdekin Shire Burdekin Shire sits in the State Electorate of Burdekin and Federal Electorate of Dawson and Kennedy. 2 Burdekin Shire, Local Government Area Snapshot December 2014 Quarter INTRODUCTION The North Queensland Department of Education and Training (DET) Region is comprised of 16 local government areas of Boulia Shire, Burdekin Shire, Burke Shire, Carpentaria Shire, Charters Towers Region, Cloncurry Shire, Doomadgee Aboriginal Shire, Flinders Shire, Hinchinbrook Shire, McKinlay Shire, Mornington Shire and Mount Isa City, Palm Island Aboriginal Shire, Richmond Shire, Townsville City and Whitsunday Regional. This snapshot is of the Burdekin Local Government Area, it can be viewed as a document on its own or as part of the Rural Coastal Fringe Sub-region profile. The information contained in this document is intended to provide a snapshot in time of the demographic, industry, employment, education and training information with the purpose to inform the requirements for education and training sector services to the region. Information is to be used as stated in the disclaimer at the end of this document. Responses will support the Queensland Government Training and Skilling programs including VET Investment Plan and Skilling Queenslander s for Work. Information includes a range of statistical data by local government area where possible and regional intelligence gathered by Training Queensland, North Queensland region and stakeholders. Labour force data will be updated quarterly, all other information will be updated in June each year. Regional intelligence will be updated on a regular basis, any updates will be recorded by current date in the header of this document. POPULATION Burdekin Shire LGA estimated resident population as at 30 June 2014 was 17,916 persons or 0.37% of Queensland. 7 The population slightly increased by 26 persons (0.1%) between 30 June 2013 and 2014 compared with Queensland which also recorded a decrease of 1.5%. The average annual growth rate from 2009 to 2014 was 0.2% compared to 1.8% for Queensland. Population projections indicate that by 2016 the expected population will be 18,001 persons. In the 2011 Census the residing population was comprised of 50.2% males and 49.8% females. 8 In June 2013, 19.9% of persons were aged 0 to 14 years, 11.6% aged 15 to 24 years, 23.3% aged 25 to 44 years, 26.9% aged 45 to 64 years, and 18.2% were 65 years and over. 7 As at 30 June 2013 the estimated median age of persons was 41.2 years of age, 4.6 years above Queensland s average Census data shows a small percentage of indigenous persons residing in the community with 5.1% compared to Queensland as a whole of 3.6% Census of Population and Housing Usual Residence Data 8 7 Queensland Regional Profiles Burdekin Shire OESR (2011 Census) 8 Australian Bureau of Statistics Burdekin Shire Basic Community Profile (2011 Census) Published on / SITlink Programs / NQ Regional Profiles Page 2
3 Burdekin Shire, Local Government Area Snapshot December 2014 Quarter LABOUR MARKET In the December 2014 quarter, Small Area Labour Market statistics in Burdekin Shire LGA indicated an unemployment rate of 7.1% compared to Queensland rate of 6.4%. This is a slight decrease compared to the September 2014 quarter of 8.9%. 9 The 2011 Census showed Indigenous unemployment rate of 9.2% (18.1% Qld) compared with 2.9% (5.9% Qld) for non-indigenous persons. 10 INDUSTRY 2011 Census of Population and Housing Usual Residence Data 11 Burdekin Shire LGA has dominant industries based on place of usual residence in Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing (1,604 persons), Manufacturing (1,158 persons), Retail Trade (817 persons) followed by Health Care & Social Assistance and Education & Training. 12 Industries with large numbers of employed females were in Health Care & Social Assistance (651 persons), Retail Trade (543 persons), Education & Training (451 persons) and Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing (357 persons), where a large majority of males were employed in Agriculture, Forestry & Fishing (1,247 persons), Manufacturing (946 persons) & Construction (388 persons) and Retail Trade (274 persons). 5 Burdekin Shire, Local Government Area Snapshot December 2014 Quarter TRAINING Burdekin Shire LGA Apprentices and Trainees In-Training 16 As at 30 June 2014, there were 241 apprentices and 68 trainees in-training with a work and home address in the Burdekin Shire LGA. Of these, 21 were school-based. The number of apprentices in-training has slightly decreased from 247 apprentices in May 2013 to 241 in June Minor decreases were identified in industry areas of food processing-meat ( 4), engineering-general ( 4), furnishing-general ( 3), hospitality-general ( 2), automotive-general ( 1), construction-civil ( 1), construction-general ( 1) and furnishing-glass ( 1). There has been an increase in the utilitieselectrotechnology industry ( 6), followed by food processing-baking ( 2), utilities-general ( 1), retail-personal services ( 1) and arts & entertainment-general ( 1). Arts & entertainment-graphics have remained unchanged. The number of trainees in-training has also decreased from 98 trainees in May 2013 to 68 in June A significant decrease was identified in business-general ( 25) followed by community services-aged care ( 3), business-property services ( 2), business-finance ( 1), arts & entertainment-general ( 1), arts & entertainment-entertainment ( 1), hospitality-general ( 1) and health-general ( 1). Increases occurred in the industry areas of community services-general ( 4), primary industry-agriculture ( 2), communicationsinformation technology ( 1), construction-general ( 1), and retail-personal services ( 1). Engineering-general remained unchanged.
