7 Several meeting rooms open out to expansive terraces overlooking San Diego Bay, allowing attendees to soak up San Diego s yearround sunshine. LOCATION The San Diego Convention Center is favorably located within a mile and a half of more than 12,000 first-class hotel rooms and is just 10 minutes from the San Diego International Airport. Within easy walking distance are hundreds of unique restaurants, shops, city parks, museums and attractions. Before or after meetings, attendees can stroll to the lively Gaslamp Quarter, Seaport Village, The Headquarters shopping district, Horton Plaza shopping center, the historic USS Midway Museum and Petco Park, home to the San Diego Padres. Getting around the rest of town is also simple with taxis, buses, rental cars and the Trolley, San Diego s light rail system linking downtown, Old Town and Mission Valley to the convention center. You can even rent a bike and see the sites on two wheels. FEATURES The building s architectural centerpiece is a white Teflon-covered 90,000 sq. ft. Sails Pavilion that provides an open-air feel. The glass-enclosed meeting space features an industry standard trade show floor, high-tech lighting and a cooling and heating system for maximum comfort year-round. The column-free space is equipped for a variety of events, from trade shows and receptions to banquets and galas. The Sails Pavilion is flanked by two ballroom foyers that provide excellent prefunction space. Receptions, coffee breaks and registration activities can take place throughout these areas. Adjacent to the foyers are two ballrooms, each with over 40,000 sq. ft. Designed for maximum flexibility, both ballrooms can be easily divided into smaller sections. Many of our 72 multi-function meeting rooms are accessible via glass corridors. Several meeting rooms open out to expansive terraces overlooking the San Diego Bay, the perfect place for attendees to soak up San Diego s year-round sunshine. The Sails Pavilion is also conveniently accessible to meeting rooms. SPACE Our waterfront facility features 2.6 million gross sq. ft. with 615,701 sq. ft. of exhibit space and 204,114 sq. ft. of meeting space including two 40,000 sq. ft. ballrooms. The center is home to 284,494 sq. ft. of prefunction, lobby and registration areas, as well as 184,514 sq. ft. of outdoor terrace space. Ultimate flexibility is offered for groups of any size. More than a half million sq. ft. of contiguous exhibit space is divisible into seven halls of varying sizes. Fifty loading docks offer convenient access to exhibit halls. One of the most environmentallyfriendly convention facilities in the nation, our center is LEED Silver-certified by the U.S. Green Building Council. 11 FACILITY OVERVIEW WASTE MINIMIZATION Recycling in 2016 diverted approximately 62% of our total waste from local landfills, earning the convention center a Recycler of the Year Award by the City of San Diego. Initial recycling efforts began in 1990 with the diversion of glass and plastic bottles, aluminum cans, mixed paper, wood pallets and clean green waste. Mixed recyclables (paper, plastic, aluminum and glass) are collected daily in clearly marked bins throughout our building helping to make it effortless for attendees to keep recyclables out of the waste stream. Used batteries, printer ink cartridges, lightbulbs, tires and corrugated cardboard are diverted. Cooking oil is collected and recycled into bio-diesel fuel. Heating/cooling system replacement and upgrades save 2.7 million kwh annually. Energy-management software and a full-facility conversion of more than 10,000 lighting fixtures to more energy-efficient LED lighting saves approximately $850,000 annually. The more environmentally-friendly LEDs offer a number of benefits including improved visibility and reduced energy consumption. Energy-efficient dishwashers in our kitchen save 3,297 kwh and 8,198 gallons of water annually. Our in-house green team is dedicated to exploring and implementing the best green practices by encouraging sustainability, waste minimization and energy and water conservation. WATER CONSERVATION Low flow automatic sinks and toilets are in all restrooms. Outdoor landscaping uses drip irrigation, drought-tolerant plants and mulch to reduce watering. Combined conservation efforts save 81,026 gallons of water annually. FOOD COMPOSTING Nearly 150 tons of food waste is diverted annually. The convention center composts all food scraps eliminating the need for garbage disposals in our kitchen. Approximately 100 tons of food is donated to local charities annually. ENVIRONMENTAL PURCHASING Products made with biodegradable and recycled materials including copy paper, legal pads, envelopes, toilet paper, facial tissue and paper towels are purchased. Environmentally responsible cleaning products are purchased for carpets, floors, kitchens and bathrooms. Dry cleaning and laundering services for staff uniforms use biodegradable solvents. Fruits, vegetables, olive oils and seafood are purchased from local farms and suppliers that are within a 100-mile radius, as supply and season allows. Green disposable cutlery and plate ware are available on request. There are compostable, sustainable and recyclable options. Please inquire as to the best options for your event. All in-house contractors require adherence to green practices. DONATING REUSABLE GOODS Coordination with clients ensures excess food is donated to local charities following events. Approximately 100 tons of food is donated to local charities annually. Annually, approximately 20 tons of leftover convention items, unclaimed lost and found items and surplus furniture and computers are donated to over 25 regional nonprofits, schools, libraries, churches, veterans groups, women s centers and shelters. LEADERSHIP Executive management develops best practices to minimize the impact of events globally by participating on IAVM s Sustainability Committee for environmentally responsible public assembly facility management. The San Diego Convention Center is proud to be a member of the Port of San Diego s Green Business Network, a group of local businesses dedicated to improve their operational efficiencies and track their successes. TRANSPORTATION Downtown is home to hotels, restaurants, retail shops and attractions all within walking distance of the convention center, eliminating the need to drive when meeting downtown. Our convention center is easily accessible via the San Diego Trolley or bus. Close proximity of hotels to the convention center reduces shuttling emissions. 50 TRANSPORTATION GETTING AROUND SAN DIEGO AIRPORT SHUTTLES Shuttle vans and buses operated by off-airport companies are available at the airport s Transportation Plazas, located across from Terminals 1 and 2 and curbside at Commuter Terminal. CAR RENTALS All car rental agencies near the airport are located offsite and do not have counters inside the terminals. Car rental shuttles operate regularly and pick up passengers outside of terminals. Car rental information is available at the convention center s Concierge Desk in Lobbies B and E. TAXIS Several companies provide taxi service at the San Diego International Airport. Follow signage from the gate to the airport s Transportation Plazas, located outside terminals where a transportation coordinator will place you in the first available taxi. Fares from the airport to convention center and downtown hotels are based on trip and average around $25. To get a taxi from the convention center or a downtown hotel, simply dial 511 and say taxi to be directly connected to a taxi dispatcher 24/7. SAN DIEGO TROLLEY MTS Trolley is a light-rail system that operates on three lines (Blue, Orange and Green) throughout San Diego. Two trolley stations, the Convention Center Station and the Gaslamp Quarter Station are located across the street from the convention center, providing convenient service around downtown and to other areas including Mission Valley and Old Town. LIMOUSINES AND TOWN CARS Several limousine companies provide service from the airport. However, be sure to verify they are licensed to pick up airport passengers before hiring their services. TRAINS The Santa Fe Depot (Amtrak) is located in downtown within walking distance to the center. Rail service from San Diego includes numerous round-trips to Los Angeles and other Southern California destinations. The Santa Fe Depot station offers access to the Coaster, a train service linking downtown San Diego to our region s coastal communities. San Diego is incredibly accessible. From taxis and rental cars to the San Diego Trolley and water taxis, attendees can choose from many modes of transportation. Located directly across the street from the Santa Fe Depot is the San Diego Trolley station at America Plaza where the Orange Line connects to the convention center.
