1 President s Report March 2017 Zonta Club of Adelaide Flinders Inc District 23, Area 2, Club 993 Chartered December 1981 President: Eronwy Edwards Vice President/Treasurer: Lindy Berketa Secretary: Rochelle Woodley Baker Board: Marisa Cheese Kye Deleur Susan MacDonald Evelyn O Loughlin Contact us: PO Box 27 Unley Business Centre Unley SA 5061 Find us on line: zontaadelaideflinders.org.au Making a Difference At our February dinner meeting we considered our club s funding of service projects for the next twelve months. This process reminded us of the ways in which we strive to empower and support women in our local community and further afield. In looking at the projects, Service Committee considered the balance of local and other projects, and the balance between providing direct assistance to women in difficult circumstances, as well as looking to locate and support other young women who are on their pathways as leaders in their communities. Yesterday, at the Adelaide International Women s Day Breakfast, Julie Gillard reminded us of the value of education for girls. In doing so, she provided statistics about the millions of girls for whom education is still not a reality or even a priority in their communities. There is a long way to go. Membership Committee has been busy reviewing membership and preparing for the induction of our first new member for 2017, Donna Wright. On Wednesday, by chance, I tuned into the National Press Club of Australia where Dr Kakenya Ntaiya, educator and activist, delivered their 2017 International Women s Day address. In her address, Dr Ntaiya described her journey from a remote village with neither power nor running water to her present life as an educator who is proud that now, instead of one girl, many girls from her village are now entering university (continued on page 2) 15 th MARCH 2017 DINNER MEETING GUEST SPEAKERS: WENDY BRUCE AND MARY BURFORD Zonta Club of Adelaide A 17 year journey to develop service and advocacy projects The meeting is at the Public School s Club 207 East Terrace, Adelaide at 6.15 for 6.45pm start
2 (Continued from page 1) Dr Ntaiya s address was compelling and uplifting. I urge each of you to access it on ABC ivew. You will not be disappointed, and it will serve to remind you of how powerful one person can be in making a difference, and how a small change can lead to much larger changes. Dr Ntaiya embodied the best of a trailblazing Zontian. If she is not a Zontian, I certainly hope she will be soon. Closer to home, at our March meeting we will be hearing from two members from the Zonta Club of Adelaide, Wendy Bruce and Mary Burford, who will tell us about their club s seventeen- year journey to develop their service and advocacy projects to make a difference in their community. We will find this invaluable as we strive to come to grips with the recently released service definition that also defines and addresses the notion of root causes and/or early intervention and sustainability. As a club, we need to become well versed in this field of service. To assist us to understand our current level of hands on service, ask each of you to give a few minutes to responding to the service audit survey that will be out early this week. The aim is not to identify individual members, but rather to collect a snapshot of our current service hours as a club, so that we can then engage more meaningfully in our continuing conversation. I thank you in anticipation of your support. 3 MEMBERSHIP MATTERS At our February meeting we welcomed our first new member for 2017 DONNA WRIGHT MARJORIE SMITH I received a copy of an from Marjorie s daughter, Helen. You can delete mum's now, as we will be dismantling the internet at her unit soon. The salvos are coming on Tuesday to take whatever they want! Mum is in Resthaven Westbourne Park, 30 Sussex Tce, Richmond wing 358, but most afternoons she is in the hall for activities. She has a mobile but she can't use it now & is not good on the phone anyway. Her ulcers are never ending & her legs are bandaged daily. Thanks, Helen Smith For those members who have not had the pleasure of knowing Marjorie, she is an amazing and well loved member of our Club. I m sure she would welcome a visit from her beloved Zontians. Editor
4 WHAT S HAPPENING WITH OUR SERVICE PROJECTS? ZONTA CARES TOILETRY BAGS PROJECT 150 filled Toiletry Bags are donated to 2 women s shelters before Christmas to be given to victims of domestic violence as they arrive at the shelters. These women usually have had no time to collect personal items. The bags are made from rubber- backed curtain fabric, cord and wooden beads to finish, and filled with the basic toiletries, and with any extras we can collect during the year. Small cards with a greeting from our Club are included. Basic Toiletries Deodorant (roll- on) Face Washer in zipped bag Soap in Soap Holder Tissues, Kleenex (Purse pack) 2 Emery Boards or 1 Manicure Set Toothpaste Hair Brush Hair Shampoo min. 100ml Hair Conditioner min. 100ml Toothbrush in Holder Razor 3 Hair Ties Hygiene Pack of 1pr Ladies Briefs, 3 Sanitary Pads, 3 Tampons in zipped bag Whilst the club funds most of the budget for this project, it is very much appreciated that members donate toiletry items monthly, make an annual donation, or donate cash, to help to defray the club fundraising requirements. Other supplies are donated or purchased in bulk where possible. The Club purchases the sanitary items for the hygiene packs as it is important that these items are individually wrapped, and handled with care. Suggested items for each month appear in Flinders Facts and notice of what is listed for the following month. However any item can be donated at any time, and members requested that we publish the full list this month. TOILETRY OF THE MONTH MARCH: Facewashers and emery boards APRIL: Hairbrushes and razors
5 NO FGM Australia BROCHURES SPONSORED BY THE ZONTA CLUB OF ADELAIDE FLINDERS Dear Marianne Thank you so much once again for your support for our work. I have now finalised the brochures and they have been sent to the printer. The professional version is currently still being adjusted by the designer to include some of the most recent research we have which confirms that FGM is being performed on Australian girls. You may have seen this article about the research by Prof Elizabeth Elliott of the Australian Paediatric Surveilance Unit. I am so proud to say that we will be able to give the brochures out at the event on March 5th for International Women's Day we are coorganising in Sydney with Amnesty International. We really do need and appreciate any help we can and your support to help us to raise awareness. Thanks again Paula Dear Paula Thank you for your update about the status of the printing and launch of Brochures for No FGM Foundation. Also thank you for the opportunity for Zonta, Adelaide Flinders Club could assist with this important project within the Community towards eradicating FGM. It is wonderful that these Brochures will help towards raising awareness for saying no to FGM through the No FGM Foundation and that the Brochures are being launched for International Women's Day event in Sydney on Sunday. All the best to yourself and Khadija and wish you well with this and future projects. Again thank you for assisting raising this important issue within the Community and that Zonta could help with raising awareness to saying no to FGM. Kind Regards Marianne Kidd On behalf of Zonta Adelaide Flinders Club
