1 COST FP1205 Training School Bangor, Wales (UK) 3 rd 4 th March 2014 Applications of cellulose in industrial film application COST FP1205 (Innovative applications of regenerated wood cellulose fibres) will hold its first Training School at BioComposites Centre, Bangor University on 3 rd 4 th March, The University was founded in 1884 as a direct result of a campaign in the late nineteenth century for higher education provision in Wales. Funds were raised by public subscription to establish a college of university rank in Bangor. An important feature of its foundation was the voluntary contributions made by local people, including farmers and quarrymen, from their weekly wages over a period of time. Today the University is home to nearly 12,000 students and 2,000 staff. Bangor is situated on the north-west coast of Wales, on the Menai Strait between the island of Anglesey and the Snowdonia national park (Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales at a height of 1085 metres). The Training School, will focus on a series of lectures and practical sessions, providing attendees with knowledge of the application of nano-cellulose in film production at pilot scale and the assessment of properties.

3 Getting to Bangor Delegates are once again advised to travel to Bangor on Sunday 2 nd March to ensure full participation at the Training School Arriving By air Liverpool John Lennon (approx. 130 km) and Manchester International (approx. 160 km) airports are the closest airports to Bangor. Other alternatives are Birmingham International airport (230 km) and Heathrow airport (420 km). There are regular train links from these airports to Bangor (Liverpool requires a bus transfer from the airport to the city centre). Arriving By train Bangor is on the main London Euston to Holyhead rail line, with several direct trains from London (if flying to Heathrow it will be necessary to take London Underground from London Paddington to London Euston). There are regular train services from Manchester, Liverpool, and Birmingham. 4 Directions to the recommended accommodation Delegates are advised to stay at the Management Centre. Directions from the train station to the Management Centre are as follows: About a 15 minute walk Head east up Holyhead road, Go past a small roundabout by Morrisons supermarket Turn right onto College Rd Walk along college road and past the main university building Destination will be on the left.

5 Directions to the Training School from the Management Centre The Training School will be held in the Thoday building of the University for Day 1 session. For persons staying at other accommodation, Thoday building can be found on Deiniol Road. About a 7 minute walk Walk along College Road toward College Lane, Turn left onto Deiniol Street and walk down the steps at the end Walk down hill and then turn left and walk down hill towards the main road (Deiniol Road) Turn right and the Thoday building is on the right The introduction will be held in room F1 on the first floor

6 For Day 2, the Training School will be held in Environment Centre Wales (ECW). This venue is further along the road from Thoday building (going towards railway station, approx. 400 metres, set back from road by mini-roundabout). So it is possible to follow directions for Day 1 from management centre, but on reaching main road, turn right, walk 400 metres. Alternatively, it is possible to go through the university car park as shown on map below: Walk along College Road toward College Lane, Turn left onto Deiniol Street and walk down the steps at the end Walk down hill and then turn left then turn right into car park Follow path to end, then take slight left then right, ECW entrance on right hand side.
