BULLETIN 19 June, 2014 This week is Pres Pat s ast meeting and we have Man Behind the Badge New Member John Osborn Fresh from his induction ast week we have John Osborn to te us his story. At ast week s meeting he had his famiy aong for support with father Greg, mother Yvonne and doting grandma Wyn who hid her 97 years very we. She made a of few of our members ook sow by bounding up the stairs at Mianos ast week. 2 Last meeting s speaker - 12 May, 2014 Russe Zimmerman CEO AUSTRALIAN RETAIL ASSOCIATION Russe is the CEO of the Austraian Retaiers Association. ARA is the peak body representing Austraia s $265 biion retai sector, which empoys 1.2 miion peope. ARA works to hep ensure retai success by informing, protecting, advocating for and educating its 5,000 members across Austraia. This doesn t do justice to Russe s tak but the Editor ran out of time to put in the fu version. Suffi ce to say there were many great questions asked from the f oor and great answers given by Russe. 4 3 NEW MEMBERS INDUCTED and more to come!!! Chairman Aan Pinkus handed over to PP Ron Sher to introduce the three new members to be inducted ast week - Peter Sneddon, John Osborn and Danie Tenagia. Ron said to be a member of Rotary is a priviege and to be a member of the Rotary Cub of Brighton is a rea honour. PP Ian Mence proposed Peter Sneddon, Russe Zimmerman proposed John Osborn and PP Aan Pinkus proposed Danie Tenagia. Each proposer got up to say a few words about their inductee and then Pres Pat was caed forward to commence the process. Peter comes in under the designation of Buyers Advocate Rea Estate; John comes in under the designation of Business Advocacy; Danie under Hairdressing suppies. Each gave a short speech to the Cub. There wi be 3 more inductions next week. 5 PRESIDENT S REPORT Presented by President Pat Kearns Pres Pat wecomed Rotarians and guests. Pat said that at the previous meeting we had a great speaker Prof Rob Moodie who gave us his Recipe for a Good Life. There were many questions asked by members. Pat said we had a very busy night coming ast week incuding donations for 2 worthy charities, 3 inductions and of course our exciting speaker. Pat then introduced his front tabe comprising Chairman PP Aan Pinkus, specia guest speaker Russe Zimmerman, Secretary Bi Howey and Vice President PP Ron Sher. Pat then asked for a very warm Brighton Rotary wecome for Russe. Pat then asked for Members to introduce their guests. He aso thanked PP Tony Nanfra for ooking after the adies with a gass of bubby on arriva. Pat then asked PP Pau Nichoson and Cameron Ward to come forward to present cheques to Ron Shieds of RMH Monash (Ronad McDonad House) and Jim Campbe of the Epiepsy Foundation which were proceeds from the Sportsman s Night this year. Pau and Cameron aso acknowedged the major sponsorship of Brighton BMW. Pat then asked Peter Sneddon, John Osborn and Danie Tenagia to come forward to be inducted into the Cub. At the end of the meeting Pat summed up the night and spoke about the upcoming Mayer Page Heath Wak which was hed ast Sunday (see report and photos back page) and of course the Changeover Dinner which wi be next week at the Sandy Yacht Cub. He then thanked the speaker Russe Zimmerman for his tak and said he was proud to have 3 new members inducted into the Cub. He acknowedged wives of past members and aso sponsor Brett Jakes of Brighton BMW and aso Jim Campbe and Ron Shieds. There s a new name for Mercedes-Benz on Nepean Highway. SECRETARY S ANNOUNCEMENTS Presented by Secretary Bi Howey PP Robert Ward - Firsty wecomed the new members to the Cub and said he had been a member for over 40 years and suggested that they shoud enjoy themseves and have a ot of fun. He then asked if we remembered the od Bug House. The Brighton Historica Society are putting a paque there on Friday 20 June at 2pm where the od Prince George was. Afterwards you can go to the Town Ha at 2.30pm and have a siver service tea courtesy of the Hysterica Society. However it was a breaking bad for Bi thereafter, seemingy suffering from symptoms of dendrophiia. It was a great morning for gof - mid, overcast and no wind. Competition was keen. David Lee was a mode of consistency, winning both Longest Drive and Lowest Score. Ron Stark got Nearest the Pin whie Ivan Vojay exceed in narrowy winning the Handicap Trophy from an improving Ray Street. At the Venus trophy hoe, Arthur Hubbard surprised himsef by successfuy negotiating the water hazard whie Acting Captain Bruce Crossey drove on to the green ony to narrowy miss a birdie putt. 8 Highights of 15 June Mayer Page Heath Wak GREAT TO SEE YOU WEARING THE CLUB CAPS GUYS! On Sunday 30 pus Rotarians, partners and wives (not forgetting the dogs!) and one fitness trainer braved the chiy conditions on the foreshore at Hampton Paviion to enjoy an afternoon of feowship and gente exercise. A except the Editor managed to touch their toes in the warmup conducted by Pete Beaumont. This was foowed by a sow wak to Green Point and on return tunne ba and tug-of-war. We a fet we deserved a good feed after that and that s what we got. A BBQ with saads and desserts foowed. Many thanks to Genn and Suzie Ross, Sue Fairam, Vera Sherman and Say Morris for organising such a great day! Rotary Internationa Conference SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA 1-4 JUNE The 105th Rotary Internationa Convention was hed at Sydney s Oympic Park from Sunday 1st June to Wednesday 4th June. Approximatey 18,000 peope from around the word attended, incuding about 170 peope from District It was a wonderfu experience. With 4000 cubs from around the word represented the Convention created a rea awareness of being part of an internationa organization. The opening ceremony was a particuar highight. (There were actuay two ceremonies to cope with the numbers of peope attending.) The Premier of NSW and the Prime Minister of Austraia both made great wecome speeches. PM Tony Abbott received a standing ovation when he announced that Austraia woud make a $100 miion doar donation to the End Poio campaign. Life savers rowed the Rotary fag from Many to the Aphones Arena and paraded the fags of the 200 nations represented. Human Nature then entertained with an hour ong show of Motown songs.
