3 INTRODUCTION AMSA Global Health is the largest committee of AMSA, and is the peak representative body for the global health interests of medical students in Australia. The 2016 AMSA Global Health Committee, for which this application package has been assembled, are responsible for the day-to-day management of AMSA Global Health. This includes the organisation of AMSA Global Health Council meetings, engaging with Global Health Groups (GHGs), and running projects and campaigns on a number of global health issues. The term for all positions will be from January 1st 2016 until December 31st 2016 unless otherwise specified (the AsMSA Regional Chairperson and National Exchange Officers have atypical terms). The deadline for all written applications is July 31st 2015 at 23:59 AEST. It is highly recommended that individuals contact the incumbent position holder as a matter of priority to discuss their application. It is also highly recommended that interested individuals apply for a maximum of two to three positions for which they hold a relevant skill set. CHANGES TO THE APPLICATION PROCESS FOR 2016 In 2016, the AMSA Global Health Committee will be divided into a small Executive and a larger Management Team. The Executive positions will be elected by Representatives of the twenty Global Health Groups at AMSA Global Health Council on the 26th August 2015 in Perth. The Management Team positions will be selected by a small committee of three people in the weeks after AMSA Global Health Council. An organisational chart is available below. Important note: All positions are designed to be held by a single person. However, a joint (paired) application may be submitted for any position*. *The exception to this are the roles of the National Coordinators and National Exchange Officers, which are designed to be held by two people, but applicants must apply individually. For more information please see the specific information under the specific position description below. 3

4 APPLICATION PROCESS AMSA GLOBAL STRUCTURE There is a two-stage process for all applicants: 1. A written application, and; 2. Either an in-person/videoconference presentation (for Executive positions on 26th August 2015 in Perth) or an interview via Skype (for Management Team positions in the weeks following AMSA Global Health Council). All applicants in their written application must include: A letter outlining your motivation and vision for the role of no more than one A4 page (two pages for Chair applicants) A Curriculum Vitae of no more than two A4 pages (per person) These documents should be in the same document and sent in a single PDF, with the title Position Title, First name, Surname.PDF to the AMSA Global Health Vice Chair (Internal) Chavy Arora (chavy.arora@amsa.org.au). The subject of the should be the same as the PDF file name. The deadline for all written applications is July 31st 2015 at 23:59 AEST. Late applications will not be accepted. In the days following the written application deadline, PDF applications for all Executive roles will be forwarded to AMSA Global Health Representatives for consultation with their Global Health Groups prior to voting at Council. 4

Calls for National Exchange Officers were open in June 2015, and have been reopened in this callout. To be eligible for a position, the applicant must: Be a medical student in one of Australia s medical schools; Adhere to the Application Process; Not have been the AMSA Global Health Chair for more than a total of two (2) years, for an application to the position of AMSA Global Health Chair. 5

PROCESS FOR NOMINATION AND ELECTION OF EXECUTIVE POSITIONS (EXCLUDING TREASURER) Applicants must submit their written applications (requirements outlined above) by July 31st 2015 at 23:59 AEST to the Vice Chair (Internal) Chavy Arora via org.au. Applications will be distributed to the AMSA Global Health Representative of each global health group by the August 3rd 2015, who will coordinate a consultation process with their global health group. Elections will occur on the final day of AMSA Global Health Second Council in Perth, Wednesday 26th August Each applicant will be expected to deliver an oral presentation including time for questions, in-person or via video-conference, to the AMSA Global Health Council (including Management Team, Representatives and guests). Time limits are as follows: For the position of Chair, candidates will give a 5-minute (maximum) presentation, followed by 5 minutes for questions. For all other Executive positions, candidates will give a 3-minute (maximum) presentation, followed by 3 minutes for questions. Candidates will be permitted to use audiovisual support (eg. Powerpoint slides) if desired. One AMSA Global Health Representative (or their appointed proxy) from each Global Health Group will cast their vote on behalf of their GHG. Candidates elected to the Executive positions will be announced once votes are finalised, on the same day (26 August 2015). 6

PROCESS FOR NOMINATION AND SELECTION OF MANAGEMENT TEAM POSITIONS (INCLUDING TREASURER) Applicants must submit their written applications (requirements outlined above) by July 31st 2015 at 23:59 AEST to the Vice Chair (Internal) Chavy Arora via chavy. After reviewing your motivation letter and CV, a selection committee will shortlist applicants for an interview over Skype in early September. You will be notified of your interview in the week following Council. The Selection Committee for each position will consist of: 1. The current (2015) position holder (or equivalent); 2. The current (2015) leader of the relevant stream*, or another relevant member of 2015 Executive; 3. A member from the incoming (2016) AMSA Global Health Executive (preferably the incoming Chair or incoming stream leader*). This person will have been elected at Second Council in August *e.g. For the role of Education Officer, the 2015 stream leader is the Vice Chair (Internal), and will participate in the selection panel. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of the application process within a week after their interview. 7

9 EXECUTIVE POSITION DESCRIPTIONS CHAIR The Chair uses their passion for global health to oversee and provide vision for AMSA Global Health. They are the main liaison with the AMSA Executive, Board and Council, and external organisations. The Chair s role is to foster a global health community that is robust, inclusive, open-minded, sustainable and effective. Provide strategic vision and lead AMSA Global Health, with direction from the AMSA Global Health Council and the Vision, Mission and Objectives; Ensure the fulfillment and review of AMSA Global Health s three-yearly Strategic Plan (which expires in 2016); Represent AMSA Global Health within internal and external forums, including regular communication with AMSA Council, Executive and Board, and proactive engagement with AMSA s other bodies; Direct the global health activities, priorities, and perspectives of AMSA; Alongside the Vice Chair (International) represent AMSA at, and proactively engage with international forums, including the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA); Provide leadership to ensure the fulfilment, engagement and enjoyment of team members in their work for AMSA Global Health; Establish ground rules with Vice Chair (Operations) on team communication and professionalism standards; Contribute to the handover process for the 2015 AMSA Global Health Management Team to the 2016 team; Organise a Management Team Retreat in January/February, in collaboration with the VCO and Treasurer. 10 EXECUTIVE POSITION DESCRIPTIONS VICE CHAIR (OPERATIONS) The Vice Chair (Operations) oversees internal governance and day-to-day management of the AMSA Global Health Management Team. This includes management of official documents, finances, accountability, team motivation, democratic participation and empowerment. 11 EXECUTIVE POSITION DESCRIPTIONS VICE CHAIR (EXTERNAL) The Vice-Chair External is responsible for oversight of AMSA Global Health s externally focussed activities. This includes advocacy campaigns, national projects, and policy. Importantly, in 2015, the VCE has participated on the AMSA Central Advocacy Team, and assists with the implementation of AMSA s advocacy priorities in all areas. 12 EXECUTIVE POSITION DESCRIPTIONS VICE CHAIR (INTERNATIONAL) The Vice Chair (International) is responsible for the international engagement of AMSA. Primarily, this revolves around the International Federation of Medical Student Associations (IFMSA), which is a not-for-profit organisation established to provide collaboration and unity amongst medical students globally. This also includes facilitating internationally-based global health opportunities for medical students. Foster and grow AMSA s international engagement; Facilitate, select and coordinate the AMSA delegation to the March General Assembly, the August General Assembly and the Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting Communicate opportunities that arise from the IFMSA to Australian medical students (e.g. international conferences, exchanges, workshops, WHO internships) via the AMSA Global Health Management Team Alongside the Chair, represent AMSA at, and proactively engage with international forums, including IFMSA general assemblies; Chair the International Stream which includes close liaison with the Regional Chairperson of AsMSA-International Australia & IFMSA National Exchange Officers; Proactively engage previous conference attendees with current AMSA Global Health activities; Facilitate opportunities for AMSA activities to be showcased and shared on an international platform; Work on the long-term AMSA / AsMSA / IFMSA collaboration in the Asia-Pacific; Foster relationships between AMSA and other Asia-Pacific medical student associations. Facilitating and organising the selection and logistics of Australian medical students to attend the IFMSA Meetings (3 in total March, August & Asia Pacific regional meeting); Responsible for the IFMSA server for which AMSA Global Health receives updates from what is ongoing in the IFMSA and communicating the opportunities to the rest of the committee for further distribution to other medical students; Engaging with potential opportunities within the IFMSA and Asian Medical Students Association (including the Australian chapter). There is incredible potential to work alongside the Australian chapter of the Asian Medical Students Association and collaborate future opportunities. Prior experience with IFMSA either as a general delegate or some prior work Willingness to attend one (or more) IFMSA Meetings, most likely as Delegation Leader Good organisational skills and time-management priorities Creative insight into how to expand AMSA s presence and influence in the IFMSA & abroad Weekly: 8-12 hours Peak times: 10+ hours, Prior to the IFMSA General Assembly in March, August and the IFMSA Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting, usually in June. 13 EXECUTIVE POSITION DESCRIPTIONS NATIONAL COORDINATORS The National Coordinators link AMSA Global Health to the Global Health Groups it represents. It involves communicating with AMSA Global Health Representatives and overseeing Councils, where Representatives and the Management Team come together. The core purpose of this role is to create and sustain an inclusive, motivating, collaborative and accountable community within AMSA Global Health. NB: This role is a dual position, but candidates are expected to apply individually. If you have a candidate you would like to work with, you can indicate this in your written application and presentation at August Council, however, joint applications will not be accepted. Ideally, the two National Coordinators will be from different Global Health Groups. The reason for this request is to increase equity and representation among the GHGs. Act as liaison between AMSA Global Health Management Team and Representatives Introduce Representatives to AMSA Global Health, and ensure that they are fully aware of their role and responsibilities after being elected. For example, updating the annual Representative Package and Google Drive with resources; Arrange monthly reports and Skype meetings with each Representative/ Stage Group (or more as needed); Participate in fortnightly Capacity Stream and Executive meetings and monthly Management Team meetings and communicate any queries/ themes from discussions with the Representatives; Communicate on a weekly basis via to all Representatives to inform them about AMSA Global Health events, promotions, other tasks related to their role; Collect any announcements from AMSA Global Health Management Team to the Representatives and prioritise these within the weekly . Organise the logistical aspects of both Councils, including: Registration of Representatives, Management Team and guests via an online form; Booking the venue, accommodation and catering (according to the Budget) and overseeing these during Council; Collecting Bi-Annual Reports from the Representatives to distribute as part of the Pre-Council package; Sending out a Pre-Council Package with details of accommodation, venue, agenda, pre-readings; Being the go to person for Representatives with any issues at Council, and make sure that they feel included and aware of what is happening. Oversee and liaise closely with the Training Coordinator. 13

The core role of the treasurer is to ensure the fiscal accountability, transparency and efficiency of AMSA Global Health. This involves being responsible for the creation and overall management of the AMSA Global Health s budget and finances, with the goal of achieving financial growth and sustainability. 17 MANAGEMENT TEAM POSITION DESCRIPTIONS EDUCATION OFFICER The role of Education Officer is to oversee and coordinate educational activities for AMSA Global Health. This is a wonderful opportunity to be creative, drive and take ownership of the education projects you are passionate about and to work with enthusiastic partners. The role includes convening or overseeing AMSA Global Academy and the Pre-Departure Training course. Convening these courses may be outsourced to a recruited subcommittee member, in discussion with the 2016 Chair and Vice Chair (External). 18 MANAGEMENT TEAM POSITION DESCRIPTIONS POLICY OFFICER The Policy Officer coordinates and supports authors writing AMSA policy relating to global health and public health policies. The Policy Officer is also responsible for maintaining the currency of global health policies (at a maximum, <5 years old) in conjunction with the AMSA Policy Officer. In conjunction with the Vice-Chair External and AMSA Policy Officer, coordinates the policy development process of AMSA Global Health: Coordinating policy working parties Seeking out advice from externals Include consultation processes with medical students Ensuring policies are up to date, and reviewed after 5 years (at a maximum) Convening a policy subcommittee if required Running/coordinating policy teaching sessions for interested individuals and the policy subcommittee Liaising with the AMSA Policy Officer and AMSA Global Health Vice-Chair External Liaising with policy authors and review teams Reviewing and editing policies Coordinating the policy review process Previous experience and knowledge of policy and policy processes, preferably with experience in monitoring and evaluation Facilitation and communication skills Weekly: 5-8 hours Peak times: hours in the lead up to AMSA Councils, during the peak periods of policy review team set-up. 19 MANAGEMENT TEAM POSITION DESCRIPTIONS IT & PUBLICITY OFFICER The IT and Publicity Officer brings together and presents the independently functioning elements of AMSA Global Health in a coordinated and appealing fashion to the medical students of Australia, in order to promote and publicise global health opportunities. 20 MANAGEMENT TEAM POSITION DESCRIPTIONS SPONSORSHIP & PARTNERSHIPS OFFICER The role of the Sponsorship and Partnerships Officer is to initiate and facilitate financial and non-financial partnerships with Australian organisations. This involves working as part of AMSA s sponsorship team, and serving as a communication channel between AMSA Global Health and external organisations. 21 MANAGEMENT TEAM POSITION DESCRIPTIONS TRAINING OFFICER AMSA Global Health Training aims to upskill and empower medical students across Australia to help them enact change in global health. The Training Coordinator role is to ensure that AMSA Global Health Training is accessible, sustainable, goal-directed and innovative. This role involves the development of training in professional development and global health topics that enable students to be confident in using their voice as future healthcare professionals. The vision for Vector is for medical students to be interested and actively involved in academic writing in global health. Our mission is to produce a high quality peer-reviewed academic journal that is dedicated to the needs and interests of medical students. Most importantly, we aim to provide a platform for medical students to participate in the publication process, and as such, feel empowered to continue sharing their knowledge and opinions in global health through academic writing in the future. 23 MANAGEMENT TEAM POSITION DESCRIPTIONS CODE GREEN NATIONAL PROJECT MANAGER Climate change is the greatest global health threat of the 21st century. As health advocates and future medical professionals we will be at the frontline of responding to the health consequences of climate change. We have a great interest and responsibility in tackling climate change to protect human health and wellbeing globally. The role of the Code Green National Project Managers is to support the strengthening and expansion of a network of Climate Change and Health projects across Australia. With high expectations of the outcomes at the COP21 negotiations in Paris in December, and upcoming federal elections, 2016 will be a very important year for advocacy for action on climate change. Maintain an updated contact list of Local Coordinators, for each university to engage medical students in national projects, encourage and support divestment and support them in local initiatives Liaise directly with Doctors for the Environment Australia, the Climate and Health Alliance and other community climate advocacy groups Recruit and oversee a core national team working on Code Green Promote the concept of Code Green to Australian medical students through AMSA Global Health and AMSA, including through incorporation of sustainability principles and climate and health concerns in other projects Work with AMSA and AMSA Global Health to reduce our own internal environmental footprint Where appropriate, facilitate political advocacy through submission writing and meetings with MPs Collate information on each Code Green project through annual reports Sending and responding to s to above mentioned groups and individuals. Crossing Borders committees are committed to working closely with local community organisations that support refugees and asylum seekers, and are run by enthusiastic and highly skilled local Crossing Borders for Health committees around Australia. This role acts as the key representative(s) for all refugee and asylum seeker health issues in Australia for medical students. NB: Two exchange officers will be selected. Applications were open in June 2015, and have been reopened. The term will start immediately following handover. Work with Local Exchange Officers (LEOs) across the country, to coordinate the Professional Exchange program of the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA), a Federation of over 1.2 million medical students from 110 countries around the world Solidifying the AMSA Exchange Program encouraging as many Medical Student Societies as are willing, to have a Local Committee and LEO and to support these LEO s by keeping in regular contact through s and meetings To attend monthly teleconference meetings with AMSA Global Health Management Team, including the International Stream meeting and submit monthly reports To support AMSA Exchanges by establishing the necessary online resources, with the help of the AMSA Global Health Management Team To continue to work for the growth and sustainability of the AMSA Exchange Program, the AMSA Exchange Hosting Program and AMSA s relationship with the IFMSA To coordinate outgoing and incoming exchanges with the LEO s and the IFMSA Standing Committee on Professional Exchanges.
