2 Gungahlin Lions September 2014 President s report Fellow Lions, September has been a fairly quiet month ending with the Fly Shoot catering. We have a couple of community issues which are being investigated (see Board meeting minutes below) and we are preparing for the 1 st Vice District Governor s visit (16 October) which will be a partner s night Please be aware of the new security arrangement at the Gungahlin Emergency Services Centre, where the trailers are stored. Upon entering or leaving through the steel gates, you must wait until the gate is completely shut behind your vehicle before proceeding to park or drive away. This is a new police security procedure to stop anyone walking in when vehicles use the gate A formal welcome to Lion Ben who has transferred from Toowoomba Lions Club now that he is a confirmed resident of Canberra. Ben has agreed to manage the club s website, taking over from Lion Lee - who has gone to Queensland! I am keen to make our website more useful for people who go to it Lions and the public and so if you have ideas on what might be displayed please talk to Ben and me. Last meeting we were able to present Ben with his dinner badge so that we can fine him if he doesn t wear it! Our Zone Chairperson Beverly von Stein made her official visit during September to talk about issues affecting our zone and region and to prepare us for the visit of the 1 st Vice District Governor Sally Wilton and her Lion husband Stan. Beverly will follow up the suggestion of a zone/region project supporting the Canberra Hospital. Next month October - will be very busy as we get warmer weather, ramp up our catering efforts and get ready to sell Christmas cakes. Add too, the District convention and 1 st Vice District Governor s visit. Yours in Lionism Mick September Board Meeting Notes Request from a student for assistance to attend The Hague International United Nations (THIMUN) conference with UN Youth in January Being followed up. Decision made to donate unsold cakes to a food charity before the use-by date expires. Lion-at-Large status granted to Lions Lee and Moira who are moving to Brisbane. New member booklet (ex-belconnen Club) being compared to Lions International booklet and ex Fyshwick Club policy document. Financial status sound in accounts and term deposit. The need to find engaging speakers discussed including a proposal to approach the Spence Muslim Centre. Lion Greg Lee advised of his resignation pending a move to the South Coast. This was accepted by the Board recognizing that Greg will consider joining a local Lions club once settled. Lion Ben will take over duties of website maintenance from Lion Lee. Lion Mark advised that the Open Day for the new Cancer Ward at Canberra Hospital had gone very well and he was hoping for some recognition of Lions support. Lion Sue Chambers made a request for continued sponsorship of Karinya House and $1000 will be made available if and when requested by Karinya House. Page 2

3 September 2014 Gungahlin Lions Social night get ready for a turkey! (That s the name for a good score in bowling Graham!) It s time to challenge for the Bone of Contention the trophy awarded to the winning club, Belconnen or Gungahlin Lions for prowess in sportsmanship. This is a long-standing trophy though it hasn t been contested for a little while. But here is our chance to have it at our club. Graham has booked three (3) lanes at the Belconnen Ten Pin bowling alley for Thursday 30 October from 8pm till 9.30pm. The cost is $22.00 per person (including shoe hire) and that gets two games, perhaps more depending on time/score. Let Graham know as soon as possible if you can assist in demonstrating how good we are at the skilful art of ten pin bowling. Graham will confirm if there is a pre-game dinner at a nearby restaurant/café/bistro Lions activity results Belconnen Lions - ADFA Oratory Competition (By Lion Mick) Lion Graham and I once again attended the Belconnen Lions Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) oratory competition which reinforced our opinion that our ADFA cadets and midshipmen are great and that public speaking is a skill to be learned and, when done well, a delight to hear. The competition involves students talking about their choice of person who has Lion-like humanitarian qualities. Our District Governor, Lorraine Mairinger, was one of the judges who selected: 1st Officer Cadet Andrew Ha speaking about Harriet Tubman 2nd Midshipman Kate Milward whose subject was Dag Hammerskjoid 3rd Midshipman Emma Cook who spoke about Father Greg Boyle. The annual Fly Shoot went very well with these three stalwarts in attendance from beginning to end. Ear plugs are essential as the sharp cracks made by the rifles are very loud. A range of culinary delights was served bacon and egg rolls, sausage sandwiches, steak sandwiches, and The Lot (which contained steak, egg and bacon as well as onions). The shooters seemed to enjoy their meals and often came back for more. Lion Garry has the organisation of the event down pat and showed off his latest improvement a camping fridge which, by a series of levers, brought the fridge out of his truck at just the right height and right next to the BBQ! Never heard of these people? Why don t you Google the names to find out more about them and consider attending the Oratory Competition next year it s well worth while Watch Lions Quarterly (LQ) LQ is a quarterly video magazine put out by Lions Clubs International which shares inspiring stories of how Lions make a difference in communities around the world. It is posted in January, April, July and October of each year. Here is the link for those in the e business: The video lasts for about 15 minutes and will likely impress you with the different ways help is being given. If you have the time to read them all International, National, District and Club newsletters- you ll be well informed about how Lions around the world are helping their fellow human beings. As a counter to the ever-bad news from the general media these newsletters are a great tonic! Page 3

She took the idea back to the school where it was quickly adopted as a community service project by the students.

4 Gungahlin Lions September 2014 Ring Pull collecting by Lion Mick My neighbour s sister is a teacher at Sherwood Ridge Public School west of Sydney. On a visit to Canberra some time ago heard about the collection of aluminium can ring pulls and their transformation into walking aids for amputees and Thailand and nearby countries. She took the idea back to the school where it was quickly adopted as a community service project by the students. Since then I have received many plastic bags full of ring pulls which I send on to Thailand. In recognition of their efforts in collecting and thinking of others I recently presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the teacher who was again visiting Canberra. The certificate will be presented to the student assembly and then put on display. I have given the teacher the contact particulars of their nearest Lions Club and suggested that they be contacted about the students undertaking further community service activities. There are many that young people can do collecting used glasses for instance Learn more about GI Cancer Being diagnosed with cancer can inevitably lead to many questions. Survivors, patients and carers dealing with the challenges of gastro-intestinal cancer are invited to hear from leading health professionals about the latest advancements in research and treatments. Organised by the GI Cancer Institute, the Engage Community Forum is a free event that provides an opportunity for those impacted by gastro-intestinal cancer to discuss quality of life issues and cancer survivorship with experts in the field. 5 September 2014 Gungahlin Lions From Greening Australia: Help us grow some natives! We are beginning to grow our plants for next year's revegetation projects. Please join us to get your hands dirty and have a good yarn! Our nursery produces tens of thousands of seedlings each year, and each one of them is nurtured by a volunteer like you! These plants are integral to our landscape repair work, being planted in nature reserves, National Parks and on farms. Propagation sessions are an easy and fun way to help out. You will also learn about techniques for propagating local native plants. These sessions are very social, and require no prior experience. Light refreshments will be provided. When: Where: Afternoon sessions Thursday 13 th November 5-7 pm Tuesday 18 th November 5-7pm 1 Kubura Pl, Aranda. The Kiwi takes three biscuits and puts them into his pocket with such speed the baker doesn't notice. The Kiwi says to the Aussie: "You'll never beat that!" The Aussie says to the Kiwi: "Watch and learn!" He says to the baker "Give me a biscuit, I'll show you a magic trick!" The baker gives him the biscuit which the Aussie promptly eats. Then he says to the baker: "Give me another biscuit for my magic trick." The baker is getting suspicious but he gives it to him. He eats this one too. Then he says again: "Give me one more biscuit." The baker is getting angry now but gives him one anyway. The Aussie eats this one too. Now the baker is really mad, and yells: "Where's your famous magic trick?" The Aussie says: "Look in the Kiwi's pocket!" Found in the airwaves Dear Robyn I am writing with a plea for you to increase Graham s allowance. In his current form, he will need to bring a pocket full of change to Lions meetings in order to pay the fines the Tail Twister is likely to levy against him. At tonight s meeting he almost needed to hit Mick Richardson up for a loan because he had provided so much Tail Twister fodder, not one bit of which related to football of any code! If you were able to bump his allowance up by even 50 cents a fortnight, it might help him out of some of the holes he can dig. Thanks in anticipation. Danny PS.
