1 16th International Handbell Symposium International Convention Center (ICC) JEJU, KOREA August 5th to 9th, 2014 The Korean Handbell Association (KHA) is pleased to invite handbell ringers from around the world to the 16th International Handbell Symposium to be held in Jeju, Korea from Tuesday, 5th August to Saturday, 9th August The Symposium theme is: Ring for Beautiful World" The venue will be ICC Jeju, a purpose built Resort and Convention Centre in the south of the island of Jeju Details of Event 1. Youth Choir During the symposium, KHA plans to run programmes for young, budding ringers of the future. Through this we are striving to open some opportunities for them to participate with adult ringers in a variety of events and programmes including workshops, solo concerts and last massed ringing. * The Youth Choir is for delegates of aged 18 and under. Our main objective for the youth-oriented programmes above is to encourage them to attain confidence in and come to love handbell as they gain enriching experience by participating in events that adult ringers run and enjoy. 3. Symposium Choir Ringers who are participating in the Symposium Choir cannot be in other workshops. When you are registered and participate in this programme, you will be able to perform in the final concert on the last day of the symposium. The number of slots are limited to 45 slots for those who want to join the Symposium Choir. 4. Solo Concert During the symposium, there will be solo concerts where each participating team will have a chance to perform their respective piece of music. We KHA request each team to submit one handbell piece of choice whose playing time is no longer than 5 minutes. Currently, the schedule for the solo concerts are TBD. When finalized, KHA will notify every team in a convenient and timely manner. 5. Early arrival solo concert KHA is reaching out to churches and organizations to prepare concerts for teams to perform who arrive early and are willing to volunteer. We have decided to select an available venue in advance for August 3rd, 2014 (Sunday), which is the only possible date for solo concert, for those who want to participate. As for early-arriving teams who wish to travel in Korea before the symposium, please be advised KHA will set a travel company up for you if you notify us of your desire in advance.

3 6. Half Tour During the week of symposium, there is a half-tour trip participants can enjoy in the afternoon of Thursday, August 7th. The trip will encompass three famous places where you can see and learn about original Korean culture and unique traditions of Jeju Island. They are as following: Yongmeori Coast Yongmeori Beach is a place where Mt. Sanbangsan stretches into the ocean and it looks as if a dragon is heading underwater. This area is made of Sa-am stacks, built up over thousands of years. There are chamber-shaped Gulbangs with layers of rocks stacked up along the cliff walls. Along the road down to the seashore, there is the Hamel Castaway Memorial, in remembrance of Dutch crewman Hendrik Hamel who drifted to this place in Just off to the right of the beach is a soft and dark sandy beach. You can meet the women sea-divers of Jeju selling their catches such as ll sea cucumbers, top shells, and abalones. O'Sulloc Museum (Green Tea Museum) People have enjoyed tea over 5,000 years. Chusa Kim Jeong-hee developed tea culture while he was in exile in Jeju by growing tea trees and enjoying tea with other scholars who loved tea and left a great deal of masterpieces. Jeju Island has perfect climate to cultivate best quality tea. Osulloc was built at the enterance of Seogwang Tea Farm owned by Sulloc Tea Company. It has served as a place of culture balanced with tradition and modernity and nature-friendly relaxation. It will also help you to understand traditional Korean tea culture while enjoying a varity of green tea. Spirited Garden A garden starts from a farmer s small thoughts. Since 1968, Spirited Garden director, Seong Bum-Young, has cut rocks, made his own oreum, searched for trees all over the country and planted them here. You will be able to see what a long way one man s tenacity and effort can go. *Many participants who go on this tour will have a great time enjoying Korean culture and just the sheer spectacle of magnificent nature that this island is gifted with. Jeju will certainly be one of your most memorable places!

Period : August 6th/Wed. ~ August 7th/Fri. (On August 7th, you will be joining other participants to take a Half Tour.) -Destinations : Sungsan Sunrise Peak. Sungeup Folk Village. Udo Island(Cow Island). Jeju Folk Village. Hallim Park, etc. -Details of the tour schedule is TBD and will be posted later. 9. Final concert and Banquet For final concert and banquet which will be held on the last day of the symposium, the cost is USD. Please invite your associates and families who came with you to

5 enjoy the final cherishable performances at the concert and sumptuous meals at the banquet. Also, please reserve your tickets early. 6 Travel Information: Incheon International Airport and transfer to Jeju International Airport and 40 minutes by Bus from Jeju International Airport to ICC Jeju convention. Fee of ground transfer from airport : $5.00 (you pay the fare as you get on the bus) Delegates are responsible for making their own hotel reservations. 3 hotels with settled prices are suggested by the host: Suites Hotel ( Hana Hotel ( Hayat Regency Hotel (jeju.regency.hyatt.com) There are other hotels available in the area. We hope to have information from KHA about discount rates at selected hotels at a later date. More hotel information can be obtained from Fee and Registration Registration Fee: US$ 800 per person, including meals (lunch and dinner), excursion, sightseeing, etc. The symposium program includes: Massed Ringing rehearsals, workshop and culture classes, excursion and sightseeing. A non-refundable deposit of USD 300 must be paid at the time of registration. The final payment should be made by March 15, The administration fee for HK groups will be HK$400 per group registered. This is to cover the cover administrative and exchange rate expenses. Please pay this fee along with your registration deposit. 2. All registration form and deposit should be mailed to the Handbell Association of Hong Kong at P.O. Box No , King s Road Post Office, Hong Kong no later than December 15, Please state on the envelope 16 th International Handbell Symposium. 3. The following items should be included when you send in your registration: a. Symposium registration form with all registrants names clearly printed.

7 b. Crossed cheque of $400 administration fee (payable to Handbell Association of Hong Kong) c. Non-refundable symposium deposit. Payment can be made in either USD or HKD: i. Payment in USD: US$300 per registrant. Please deposit the total amount of your group to Hang Seng Bank Account , a/c name: 'Li Kit Yiu Emily' and mail the original bank slip along with the registration form. ii. Payment in HKD: HKD 2,350 per registrant. Please send a crossed cheque (payable to Handbell Association of Hong Kong) along with the registration form.
