5 Great saves Chairman s report 2012 has been a landmark year for St John Ambulance (Qld) - a year of great challenge but even greater achievement. Dr Vlas Efstathis Chairman, State Council Imogen Kerr Imogen Kerr, 18, was at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane waiting for a class to start when a fellow student suffered a cardiac arrest. I didn t hesitate, I went straight to the casualty, Imogen said. The young woman was on the floor. She was breathing but not responding to my calls. The 19-year-old casualty suddenly stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest. Imogen immediately began CPR with the help of a nearby security guard. Soon after, the security guard handed me a defibrillator, she said. Thanks to my first aid training I knew exactly what to do. Imogen successfully shocked the university student with the defibrillator twice before paramedics arrived. If I didn t know first aid or how to operate a defibrillator, the outcome could have been very different, she said. Cheyenne Ross Nine-year-old Cheyenne, a St John Maryborough Division Cadet, was playing in a pool while on holiday with her family. A little boy was walking around the pool to pick up a ball and he leaned over too far and fell in, she said. I grabbed him and tried to pull him up, but he was confused and accidentally pulled me in too. Cheyenne, who is not a strong swimmer, used her body to pull the young boy to the side of the pool where his mother was frantically waiting. I didn t really think about myself - I just wanted to help him, Cheyenne said. It was an instinct. Cheyenne s instincts proved to be spot-on, and her quick actions saved the boy from a potentially fatal accident. I was just really glad he was okay. It just goes to show that accidents don t always happen to someone else they can happen to you too. Cheyenne credited her training with St John for her quick response. I ve learned a lot through being a St John Cadet, she said. It s a lot of fun and I m glad I was able to put what I learned into practice. Imogen always knew that first aid skills were important, and on that day it was those skills that saved someone s life. Godwin Grech Torquay resident and senior citizen Godwin Grech did not want his sister to worry about him when she went on holidays so he had a St John lifelink medical alarm system installed. I live alone, so I had a St John lifelink medical alarm system installed so I could remain in my own home safely and independently, he said. Godwin was not expecting a medical emergency to occur, and was frightened when he had trouble breathing one evening. I suddenly began gasping for air and could hardly breathe at all, he said. I just pressed the button on my St John lifelink pendant and someone was speaking to me straight away, he said. The St John lifelink operator called triple zero 000 for an ambulance straight away. St John was able to provide the paramedics with details of my recent operation, so they knew everything about me before they came on scene, he said. The paramedics responded quickly and rushed Godwin off to the nearest hospital. Who knows what the outcome would have been if I didn t have St John lifelink? St John saved my life, he said. Action and results are essential; at the core of everything St John does is the one central focus of keeping Queenslanders safe we train, we educate, we build community resilience, we save lives. Countless Queenslanders have directly (and indirectly) interacted with St John during the past year by using our charitable services. Our people, our services Volunteer members are at the heart of all St John activities; the dedication and commitment they show to the community is unparalleled. The First Aid Services team enjoyed another busy year, forging ahead in a stronger, more focused direction. A number of regional councils signed memorandums of understanding with their local St John Divisions to assist in the response to, and recovery from, disaster events. Community Services continued to grow and adapt to community needs was a year of transition for the team; changes in government contracts and service agreements have brought about positive changes to the structure and delivery of our services. Our members in First Aid Services and Community Services received a total of $283,475 in grant funding from government and private agencies in These funds have been used to purchase much-needed equipment, enabling our volunteers to continue their work in the community. St John members are immensely proud of our rich history, and the History and Heritage Committee has worked tirelessly throughout 2012 to gather and preserve documents for future generations. Yet again, 2012 was another active year for the Ophthalmic Branch of St John Ambulance Australia. St John (Qld) provides financial support to the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem and the Oecussi program in East Timor. Highlights of 2012 n First Aid Services volunteers provided 123,624 hours of their time in the provision of first aid at public events such as sporting activities, music concerts and school fetes. n Transport Access Project (TAP) Brisbane conducted 53,364 trips, and TAP Wide Bay provided 21,253 trips for clients who have difficulty accessing transport. n Silver Cord Service volunteers provided 50,578 security and friendship calls to those in need. n 122 Healthcare volunteers provided more than 20,160 hours of services to Logan and Caboolture hospitals. I would like to acknowledge and thank the Chief Executive Officer, St John (Qld) staff and my fellow Board members for their collaboration during the past year. Faced with many challenges we have managed to grow our business and, as a result, our service to the community. Of course, it is our many volunteer members who make this organisation what it is. I applaud each and every St John member for the excellent service they provide to the community. Dr Vlas Efstathis OAM RFD Chairman, State Council Volunteer members are at the heart of all St John activities 4 St John Ambulance (Qld) Annual Report

6 Chief Executive Officer s report St John Ambulance has been working steadfastly to care for and protect Australians for 130 years. In this time we have become Australia s leading first aid organisation. Errol Carey Chief Executive Officer Although the actions of St John (Qld) are limited by our State boundary, we are an active member of St John Ambulance Australia. The primary role of St John in the community is acknowledged by the vast majority of Queenslanders. We are, however, much more than the powerful red and white logo synonymous with first aid or the black and white (soon to be green) uniformed members who keep vigilant watch over community events. A modern and progressive movement delivers a wide range of community services such as friendship calls, patient care, community transport and social support to the vulnerable. Across Queensland, St John improves the lives of members of the public through the work of First Aid Services Divisions, Community Services groups and regional offices dedicated to the provision of total first aid solutions and community care. St John (Qld) also provides support to the St John Hospital in Jerusalem delivering ophthalmic care to those in need. During ophthalmic week in October 2012, St John members and guests were treated to a presentation by Dr Bill Glasson, who spoke about his involvement with the Eye Hospital in Jerusalem and the St John Oecussi program. This has reinvigorated Queensland members and the new year will no doubt bring some interesting projects. Growing online support In the past year, St John worked to expand web content to provide the public with more information on first aid, workplace safety and community resilience during times of disaster. Pleasingly, we continued to grow visitation to both the online shop and the information / resources sections of the site. The online shop sales for training and product increased 124% over the 2011 sales due to a targeted Google ad word campaign. Social media is a valuable channel for constructive first aid and safety discussion and provides us with a way to engage the community in our programs and services. Facebook and Twitter have helped us reach a digitally savvy audience with important safety messages, in particular with regards to emergency management during times of disaster. We anticipate growth in social networking channels will help us broaden this digital reach in the coming year. Reaching OUT through media During the year, St John (Qld) secured more than $713,500 worth of free advertising value across television, print and radio outlets. Every story in the media about St John (Qld) helps to raise awareness and build community understanding - from the importance of knowing basic first aid, to educating people about the health risks involved with post-flood clean ups, and from the small Division that services the needs of a rural community to the transport service offering assistance in evacuating elderly residents from a nursing home to safety. Expanding services After a year of careful planning and research, the St John lifelink medical alert system was launched in The St John lifelink campaign stems from a desire to make an effective public health contribution towards addressing the growing ageing population, decreased access to proper assisted living options and the over burdened healthcare system. St John lifelink enables people who have been injured, have fallen or become ill in their homes to call for help simply by pressing a button. If the alert is triggered, St John immediately contacts the client to identify the problem and sends appropriate help. In order to adapt to the changing landscape of the first aid industry, St John Ambulance in Queensland has re-evaluated service delivery models and found new ways to complement our traditional First Aid Services volunteer model. St John Ambulance Medical Services was introduced in 2012, offering emergency pre-hospital medical solutions to industrial and remote sites such as mines. This exciting venture has grown rapidly and it is anticipated to yield pleasing results in the year ahead. Queensland 2012 statistics at a glance n 1,006 First Aid Services volunteers n 379 Community Services volunteers n 196,603 hours of voluntary first aid and community service (increase of more than 10 percent on last year) n 7,835 first aid casualties treated n 67,131 first aid certificates issued The successful growth of St John and our ability to serve the community is the direct result of our valued members. It has been an extraordinarily busy and productive year. Our success is attributable to the strong support of the Queensland community and government agencies, the generous backing by our supporters, the dedication and skills of our members, and the leadership of our Board and senior management group. Thank you to all who have contributed to our success and I look forward to the next year of progress in providing safety and well-being for all Queenslanders. 7 First Aid Services St John First Aid Services volunteers are highly skilled and regularly undertake advanced levels of clinical training. It is due to this high level of expertise that St John plays a significant role in Disaster Management and Recovery. We work closely with Emergency Management Queensland, Local Emergency Management Committees and the Department of Community Safety to support the community in times of disaster. On a more day-to-day basis, St John works alongside the Queensland Ambulance Service to plan and implement major event duties each year. These include Australia Day celebrations, Anzac Day parades, the Ekka, Big Day Out and New Year s Eve celebrations. Key technological advancements in 2012 included our new communications centre (4SJ Brisbane) at St John House. The work was completed in time for the Ekka and saw the smooth running of this event from the centre. To further improve our ability to monitor major events from 4SJ Brisbane, new repeaters were installed at various locations throughout Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Maryborough. The past year has been one of growth and change for First Aid Services in Queensland. Member numbers increased during 2012 to 1,006 members, up 6 percent from The number of duties also increased, with St John attending 3,266 events, providing treatment for 7,835 casualties and logging more than 64,500 duty hours. These duty hours, combined with training and administration hours, meant First Aid Services members volunteered an impressive 123,624 hours of their time to keep the Queensland community safe. That s almost 100 hours per member. With the abrupt disbanding of the Emergency Service Cadet program late in 2012, First Aid Services offered the St John Cadet program as an alternative. This has led to a new Division being formed in Kingaroy, with a Division set to open in Pomona / Cooroy in early Negotiations are well advanced for a new Division in Moreton Bay sharing Redcliffe State Emergency Services facilities. Three Divisions in the Gold Coast Region combined mid-year to create the Gold Coast Combined Division. This centralised Division will better utilise resources and offer a wider range of training options to members. Brisbane Central No. 1 and Brisbane Central No. 2 Divisions also combined, forming the Brisbane Central Combined Division. All Divisions in Queensland were re-designated as combined Divisions to allow for the continuing growth of the Cadet movement; each Division now offers both adult and youth programs. During 2012 much research was undertaken into looking at a more viable uniform for events held in Queensland s sometimes harsh environments. A successful trial of a new set of greens was implemented at the end of 2012, and the new uniforms will be made available to members in March This uniform will become the main duty uniform for First Aid Services members in Queensland, however the black and white duty uniform 1 will remain the dress code for formal occasions. The St John FAS team signed memorandums of understanding with Brisbane City Council, Fraser Coast Regional Council, Morten Bay Regional Council, Townsville Council and Western Downs Regional Council. The agreements outline that St John (Qld) will provide a wide range of services in the event of a disaster such as a flood, cyclone, tsunami, epidemic or an attack against Queensland. Into will be another year of both growth and change for First Aid Services in Queensland as we move and adapt to the changing environment where we now compete with many commercial organisations providing quality first aid services. In this environment it is now up to the First Aid Services team to continue to improve its quality of care and cost effectiveness to the Queensland community. I look forward to a year full of challenges and successes. Peter McMurtrie AO FACAP Queensland Commissioner Wherever you are in Queensland, St John First Aid Services volunteers have you covered. 9 Community Services Every day, many people receive life-changing support from St John Community Services. Our commitment to provide charitable service support in areas other than first aid continued to grow during The year brought many challenges, with the introduction of the new service contract arrangements with Commonwealth and State Governments, the new Common Care Standards and the implementation of the National Police Checks across all staff and volunteers. The new police checks compliance has impacted across all community service organisations, but allows agencies to positively identify risk with potential employees and volunteers before they are engaged. Challenges and changes The Community Services team has once again had an exciting year; programs were adjusted to incorporate the transition and changes of the new funding model for Home and Community Care (HACC) during Manuals, policy and procedure documentation are being updated with HACC funding generically across all programs and inclusive of broader St John policies. Competent and ground-breaking managers see their roles as progressive and innovative, with a focused research, project planning and evaluation model in place. The Bundaberg Hall underwent extensive renovations, enabling the team to provide streamline services to the community. The official opening in October attracted a magnitude of guests, including former Brigade volunteers Joan Green, Dr Pamela Donnelly and Peter Richardson. Among the other distinguished guests was John Carlyle, a dear friend of the late Norma Curran (a former Community Services client). Thanks to a bequest in Norma s Will, the renovations of the Bundaberg Hall were completed. St John (Qld) CEO Errol Carey attended the unveiling of the Hall and had the opportunity to personally thank John Carlyle for his friend s generous donation. Norma s legacy will be remembered - a commemorative plaque has been erected at the entrance of the building acknowledging her kind donation. Social support and inclusion Silver Cord provided more than 50,000 telephone calls in 2012, and our focus on volunteer recruitment, community understanding and referral to this program continues. The service has changed considerably over the years and, as new technologies emerge, will continue to adapt and adjust moving forward. Silver Cord is now enveloped in the broader social support activities respecting the holistic service approach to support client needs. The HACC one-off funding received in 2012 will see Community Services partner with Fall s Prevention to supply St John lifelink medical alerts at highly reduced rates to eligible clients. This project will return data and feedback that will be used to develop forward St John s ability to apply for further funding in support of client needs in the future. Community transport Transport has continued to grow successfully, and the integration of social support activities and group trips within the transport models has been well received with the clientele and other partner agencies. Social support trips are very successful, booking out months in advance. The client base in our transport programs continues to grow, particularly in regional areas where services have been promoted. Facilitating social support and inclusion We have seen staff and client numbers grow and workload increase dramatically, with great results. Intercity trips are mostly booked out, and demand for these types of trips is increasing. The arrival of new larger capacity Mercedes Benz buses complemented these larger trips and supported activities. Transport packages partnered through regional offices have grown successfully, supported through direct transport utilising our Roma Street Health Shuttle services. Community development work currently being undertaken will produce further growth in This service has provided transport solutions and support for people in regional areas once they arrive in Brisbane. Client and stakeholder feedback is overwhelmingly positive; services are enabling structured travel options that provide peace of mind and reassurance to service users. During 2013 St John will provide further access to these services for individuals and families visiting Brisbane from western and central Queensland. The Transport Access Project (TAP) in Brisbane and Wide Bay received significant recurrent HACC growth funding during This additional funding reflects the identified support required for future community needs, and is also recognition of the high quality work St John undertakes locally. As part of the social support to transport trips, regional community development activities have seen the successful establishment of going home packages and medical appointment reminder calls. In partnership with Bundaberg Base Hospital, St John has developed transport and social support services that provide information and improved links to the community once patients are home. We look forward to further volunteering partnerships and opportunities to develop from this innovative pivotal connection. Community Services 12 St John Ambulance (Qld) Annual Report

Connect with a familiar voice and help reduce loneliness and isolation Following a 2011 invitation from Queensland Health and HACC to support the planning and development of Brisbane north indigenous transport services, 2012 was spent working collaboratively with key stakeholders developing and supporting the successful operational outcomes of The Prince Charles Hospital Indigenous Health Service Transport Project. The Brisbane team worked collaboratively with Brisbane City Council during 2012 to plan for future expansion of their Council Cab services, supporting the Brisbane City Council Seniors Strategy s commitment to the elderly. This work is to be continued in 2013, supporting the Council s vision of a diversity of accessible transport options in Brisbane. Community Services has developed working links with Medicare Locals since their development in late 2011 to assist with social support and transport services for patients attending primary healthcare appointments and agencies involved with the delivery of health services. The past year saw continued active support and direct St John services to community-based non-profit organisations across the Brisbane and Wide Bay regions. These support individuals and families through a range of services where transport is a key element to positive outcomes. St John views 2013 as an opportunity to further build on established work and promote our services which practically enable positive community involvement as well as facilitate individual self determination, independent living and increased social inclusion. In 2013 we are aiming to further broaden existing services through increased member training, expanding transport packages and increasing social support to individuals and partner groups. Success through determination The success of the current programs has resulted in increased capability of St John Ambulance to respond to meet the increasing community demand for services. St John is attempting to source additional funding streams to support our community services into the future; the financial cost of providing our services throughout 2012 cannot be sustained without additional funding streams. A highlight in 2012 has been the increased participation of volunteers in a broader range of dynamic roles including active administrative support, transport, social support and health services. However, many are unaware that St John (Qld) offers more than first aid. The Community Services team, supported by 500 volunteers in Queensland, offer assistance to the vulnerable in our community, including the elderly and people with a disability. 11 Training A major focus for St John is to provide first aid knowledge and skills to all Queenslanders. In order to meet this ambitious goal, we have improved our delivery methods to make it easier for more people to learn first aid and access first aid information. During the 2012 period, St John (Qld) conducted 9,649 courses and issued 67,131 certificates, an increase of more than 3 percent from Training performed well during 2012 in an increasingly competitive market through tailoring training solutions, providing courses at more locations and making first aid information widely available. Tailoring training solutions FASTTRACK and PLUS+ sized Perform CPR and Apply First Aid courses enable participants to choose the level of knowledge they wish to achieve. These courses were introduced in 2011 and have proven very successful in The introduction and roll-out of advanced courses such as Certificate IV Healthcare (Ambulance), Certificate III in Basic Healthcare (Ambulance), Certificate IV TAE and Certificate IV Frontline Management have proven extremely successful. Limited training providers offer these types of courses and St John closed the gap by offering them at competitive prices. To cater for early morning tradespeople, early bird Perform CPR and Low Voltage Electrical Work Rescue courses were introduced, ensuring participants were finished by 8am. PROVIDING courses at more locations St John has 275 trainers delivering first aid courses in more than 40 public venues across Queensland. Many more courses are delivered for companies within their workplace. In addition to these courses, St John also has partnership agreements in place with schools and other workplaces. These are agreements to deliver St John courses that meet our training standards. Making first aid information widely available St John (Qld) is committed to making first aid information widely available within the community. Not everyone has the ability, time or resources to attend certified first aid training. To ensure basic first aid knowledge is delivered to the community, St John (Qld) provides: n Timely first aid tips to local media outlets following specific events n posters depicting a range of first aid treatments to schools, workplaces and community groups n First aid talks / demonstrations at community events n Free courses for community groups who require in-depth first aid skills (Scouts, Rural Fire Brigade) One of the 2012 strategic goals for training was to target larger clients with compliance requirements. This proved very successful and brought in many new statewide clients including Childcare Queensland, Brisbane City Council, CS Energy, the Archdiocese of Queensland and Suncorp. In the regions The dedicated teams in our nine regional offices continue to provide their local communities with quality training and first aid solutions, often travelling hundreds of kilometres to deliver services in remote areas. In a life or death emergency, I want to be able to choose life. Jaye Lyons The Toowoomba regional office won a Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence award after being nominated anonymously by a member of the public. The office also received generous donations from local businesses to purchase new training manikins. The rollout of the Workplace Infection Control program was met with disappointing results, particularly on the Gold Coast, where a strong push resulted in minimal participation. Growth was slow after the devastating floods that swept through the Toowoomba and Darling Downs area in 2011, however in 2012 industry training started strongly and continued to expand. The commitment shown by North Queensland staff has been reflected by the 2012 achievements; in the aftermath of Cyclone Yasi public courses have performed well and industry training has shown steady growth. The following areas have been added to the regular training calendar: Airlie Beach, Moranbah, Innisfail, Edmonton and Port Douglas has been a busy year for Central Queensland and Wide Bay, with a new Regional Manager and other staffing changes taking place. Despite inclement weather affecting both regions significantly, growth in all areas of training continued; bringing additional trainers on board has enabled St John to fill the gap in demand. Technology and online advancements As the world moves further towards online education, St John has developed, and will continue to develop, e-learning tools to provide first aid and safety education to a wide range of clients. While nothing can replace the value of practical, hands-on experience when dealing with first aid, online tools are proving very useful in providing initial information and references saw the Information Communication and Technology team complete the end-user testing for the new Training Management System, with implementation scheduled for the first quarter The new system will allow St John better access to customer relationship management and streamlined reporting. Online shop sales for training and product increased 124% over the 2011 sales, largely due to a successful Google ad word campaign which continues to bring increased unique users to our site. National support Queensland continued to provide ongoing support to the national office. A highlight was assisting with a training of trainers program conducted in the Solomon Islands. St John (Qld) sent a trainer and resources to the Solomon Islands to set up a sustainable first aid training program. St John (Qld) also provided support to St John in Western Australia to re-develop their commercial Certificate IV Health Care (Ambulance) program. To the future Training is set for an even bigger 2013 with several new clients and programs commencing early in the year. I would like to say a big thank you to the teams who work with me, and to all the trainers across Queensland who deliver lifesaving training to the community. 12 First aid kits and products A total first aid solution is not only having the knowledge and confidence to perform first aid in an emergency, gained through St John training courses, but also the first aid tools to complement these skills. St John (Qld) supplies public and industry clients with a wide range of first aid products and equipment from basic first aid kits, to high end trauma bags, and from defibrillators to equipment required to fit out an ambulance. First aid product and equipment sales competed in a tough economic environment during 2012 but still managed growth over 2011 of 13 percent. The sales area was restructured during 2012 to concentrate more resources on large corporate clients and to channel smaller sales through the online shop. This was a successful strategy, and St John (Qld) has grown its larger corporate sales and its smaller retail sales while keeping costs down. New growth areas The sales team explored new initiatives during 2012 to support the organisation and reduce the impact fierce competition in traditional sales lines has had on the business. One initiative that proved very successful was the outfitting of ambulance vehicles for the resource / mining industries and government. High demand has ensured a steady revenue stream moving into Made-to-order (MTO) kit production has grown in Queensland however supply of MTO kits to St John colleagues in South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia has diminished. This has been identified as a strategic goal for 2013 to grow this part of the business again by becoming more competitive in this area. Sales of high end products to the resource and mining areas is also increasing; advanced level defibrillators / monitors and the outfitting of first aid rooms and clinics is proving a very successful new income stream. across all Australian branches of St John Ambulance, saving the business more than $100,000 collectively. A partnership was signed with SP Services, an English company that was responsible for outfitting all first aid and medical equipment for the London Olympics. This will provide significant cost saving in product purchases. Have the right tools, to complement your skills. Community relations With almost 50,000 Australians dying each year from cardiac arrest, St John has continued to work with companies and communities to deploy defibrillators throughout the State. This has resulted not only in better access to defibrillators in shopping centres, clubs, workplaces, and sporting venues, but also increased community awareness. St John (Qld) built on this foundation in 2012 by providing community subsidised defibrillators to clubs in Queensland. The Club HeartStart program aims to save lives through first aid by offering community clubs the opportunity to purchase defibrillators at a reduced rate. Traditional sales The sales team took part in many expos and shows across the State, promoting the St John total first aid solutions package. Although not high income earners in their own right, attendance at these events has led to some major clients and partnerships for 2013 including Thiess and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Maximising profit In order to continue supporting the charitable arm of the business, St John must ensure profits are maximised and expenses are minimised during hard economic periods. In addition to sourcing new income streams, the sales team also looked at maximising profit through enhanced buying powers and new partnerships with suppliers. St John (Qld) successfully sourced trainer defibrillators that are now in use Regional offices The Gold Coast region showed substantial growth in sales of first aid kits and supplies, achieved through hard work and attendance at many shows / expos in the area. Presence at the Gold Coast Pets and Animals Expo provided a great opportunity to showcase the new Pet First Aid Kit, which has proven to be very popular. Sales in Toowoomba remained high throughout the year, due to the prospering mining industry. Central Queensland and Wide Bay sales were steady. First aid kits and supplies sales were difficult in North Queensland, however kit restocking service levels increased. The year ahead Those involved with first aid product and equipment sales are looking forward to a bigger and better 2013, with continued growth in traditional lines as well as development through new initiatives and partnerships. St John in Queensland aims to build on the Club HeartStart program and move into schools, an area mainly unexplored, with a range of fundraising initiatives designed around community safety. New product packaging continues to be developed with the national office, cementing St John as a progressive organisation that delivers quality products at affordable prices. 13 Medical Services For more than 100 years St John Ambulance has been the premier provider of first aid services at public events and festivals throughout Queensland. In recent years, the landscape of the first aid industry has changed; insurance, litigation, population increase and substance abuse has brought about the need for St John Ambulance to re-evaluate service delivery models and look to a new way forward to complement and support our traditional First Aid Services volunteer model. In 2012 St John (Qld) launched a new initiative to the major events, corporate, mining and industry sectors - St John Ambulance Medical Services: emergency pre-hospital medical solutions. This new initiative evolved from our well-known First Aid Services program that has proudly served the Australian community for 130 years. The new Medical Services program is staffed by paid, qualified and licensed healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses and paramedics) who are licensed to carry out emergency pre-hospital care as well as administer a wide range of emergency medications. In June of 2012 Medical Services commenced provision of services to a Coal Seam Gas Project. Currently, St John (Qld) deploys 14 paramedics, 12 ambulances and 8 registered nurses who provide round the clock coverage at 4 clinics along 600km of the roughest terrain in the country. The Medical Services team fitted remote area ambulances and set up medical facilities to provide 24 hour support throughout Central Queensland sites, administering water quality and hygiene tests, vaccinations, drug and alcohol testing, return to work and injury management and a wide range of pre-hospital emergency care. A further 6 paramedics were deployed during the year to high risk projects requiring medical coverage. It is anticipated the foundations laid in 2012 will yield great results in this exciting new field for St John. St John lifelink Slips and falls are hazardous for anyone, but for the elderly or people with a disability, they can be life-threatening. In an emergency the most important thing is being able to get help. St John (Qld) launched a new service, St John lifelink medical alarm, aimed at making an effective public health contribution towards addressing the growing ageing population, decreased access to proper assisted living options and the over burdened health care system. While much public debate has centred on the issue in recent years, not enough practical or collaborative efforts have been made by government and community groups to actually address these issues. St John lifelink provides a 24 hour medical alarm service aimed at improving quality of life and self sufficiency to people who require high levels of care but wish to remain living in their own homes. The program delivers peace of mind technology by providing round the clock monitoring to assist users and their loved ones to cope with the risks of fall-related injuries. St John lifelink also provides users with daily reminders and can also detect if a client has not moved within a specified timeframe. St John understands that most people have a strong desire to maintain their independence, lifestyle choices and networks of friends. The medical alarms provide the reassurance for people to stay at home longer with safety, security and confidence. During the year, the St John lifelink team worked tirelessly to promote the new service. To date, five St John lifelink clients have been saved due to activation of their alarms; St John was able to immediately contact the ambulance service for dispatch and provide vital health information to paramedics before they entered the client s home. Personal alarms can protect our elderly back LIFELINK ALARMS: Getting help quickly is critical to surviving and recovering from a fall. PHOTO: CONTRIBUTED ABOUT one in three Queenslanders, aged 65 and over, fall each year with the number increasing to one in two over the age of 80. In Australia, about 25% of people over the age of 65 are living by themselves. And with limited access to assisted living options this poses a scary scenario should a fall or emergency situation occur and no one is around to help. Getting help quickly is critical to surviving and recovering from an incident such as a fall. Up to 10% of falls involving the elderly result in fractures, so installing a personal alert such as the St John lifelink medical alarm system can improve quality of life, independence and provide peace of mind. Riverheads resident Glenda Cunningham, 68, knows firsthand what it is like to have a fall at home. I live in a beautiful place that s very tranquil and quiet, she said. Unfortunately, this also means I m isolated and on my own should I have a bad trip or fall. Glenda seriously hurt herself three years ago when she fell over in her backyard. No one knew I was in trouble, so I had to drag myself back into the house before I could call for help, she said. Glenda s family raised concerns for her safety and wellbeing following the incident. My family was worried it might happen again, and that next time I wouldn t be so lucky, Glenda said. I had a St John lifelink medical alarm system installed in my home so my family wouldn t worry about me falling over. Now, we all feel protected, help is just the touch of a button away and my family knows I m safe too. The St John lifelink medical alarm system operates 24-hours a day, 7-days a week, enabling elderly Queenslanders and those with a disability, to remain living independently and safely in their own homes. The small medical alarms are worn as a pendant or wristwatch and connect to a personal response unit with loudspeaker functions similar to a phone. I simply push a button on my pendant if I have an accident or fall ill and help is on the way, Glenda said. The alarm goes straight to St John Ambulance, and someone stays on the loudspeaker with me until help arrives. By utilising an infrared beam, the St John lifelink system can detect if a client does not wake up or is unable to get out of bed. The system also triggers an alarm if there is no movement in the house after a specified time in the morning. St John lifelink is an affordable solution to allow people to maintain their independence. For more information or to book an obligation-free demonstration visit or call I had to drag myself back into the house before I could call for help. But then I had a St John lifelink medical alarm system installed and now I know help is just the touch of a button away. Glenda Cunningham Hello Mrs Brown, this is St John Ambulance. Are you alright? 14 History and Heritage The history of St John Ambulance (Qld) highlights the activities of its members, its achievements and the contribution to the community it serves. St John Ambulance (Qld) established the History and Heritage Committee during its centenary year in 1989 to conserve and maintain its historical records, memorabilia and a small library. Over time, the role of the Committee has evolved to provide a wider range of activities to meet the needs of St John Ambulance members and the greater community. Reflecting the historical and modern accomplishments of volunteers throughout the years, the St John House Library focuses on state and national disasters, special events, changes in training techniques and regional accomplishments. The refurbishment and restoration of St John related items by the Committee brings new life into forgotten or damaged artefacts. The Committee holds regular working bees at St John House to restore items such as first aid equipment / texts from yesteryear, perpetual trophies, ceremonial sticks and other historical pieces. In 2012 members of the Committee contributed more than 2,630 hours of voluntary service to restore and conserve the St John archives. Preserving history through the present day The Committee s largest event of the year was the Annual Heritage Festival, organised by the Queensland National Trust. St John historical displays were provided at the Nundah and Arana Hills libraries as well as the St John Training Centre in Townsville and St John House in Brisbane. The Committee accepted an invitation to participate in the 2012 Government House Open Day, with celebrations focusing on the Queen s Diamond Jubilee and Queensland Day. St John (Qld) purchased a commemorative medallion from the occasion, which is now in the St John archives. The Governor, Her Excellency, Ms Penelope Wensley AC enjoyed a spirited visit to the St John stall, much to the delight of members. Preserving the history for future generations to discover Awards Ruth Dunstan donated a special book in memory of her late husband and Committee member Brian Dunstan; Ruth requested the book be used as considered appropriate. For the next ten years, the Brian Dunstan Prize will be awarded to the Cadet whose project was the runner-up for the Mark Compton Award. Jayden See from the Southport Cadet Division was presented with the inaugural prize in Donations, additions and maintenance of the collection During a working bee at the Townsville office, two small trophies donated by early Divisional Presidents of the St John Ambulance Brigade were discovered and sent to archives. Memorabilia has also been received from members of St John and the public. During the Bundaberg Hall renovations, three Honour Boards recording the names of St John members were found. These have been restored and are now displayed at the Hall. During a recent working bee, prints of three Australian birds were found. The prints were painted by a convict in New South Wales during the late 18th century. The originals hang in the Mitchell Library in Sydney, and our three prints have been framed and hung at St John House. The prints are so lovely; storing them in an archive box would not do them justice. The Committee purchased a certificate which holds considerable significance to St John Ambulance as an international organisation. The certificate was originally presented to the first Earl of Dudley in 1874 when he was admitted to the Order of St John. This certificate will be hung in St John House. Special visitor In November, the Committee enjoyed the opportunity to welcome Dr Ian Howie-Willis OAM to St John House where he presented a paper about the second Earl of Dudley. This presentation was attended by St John House staff and members of the St John Ambulance Historical Society of Australia. Grants The History and Heritage Committee received grants from the Brisbane City Council and the Australian Government during the year. This valuable funding has facilitated the purchase of equipment to assist the Committee members with their work. > Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) members. Brisbane Central (1940s). Committee membership The Board agreed to the inclusion of the Committee positions of Hon. Secretary and Hon. Treasurer. These have been filled by Robert DeVere and Vera Crook respectively. Three new Committee members have been appointed: Dr Fred Leditschke, Rebecca McEwan and Timothy Wieland. Margaret Hunt resigned as the Committee representative for the Rockhampton area. Dr Murray Elliott retired from active St John involvement after 23 years. Dr Elliott was a foundation member of the History and Heritage Committee when it commenced in His contribution over the years has contributed to the promotion of our rich heritage and history. Dr Elliott s service has included District Commissioner, Chairman State Council, member of the Training Committee, Priory Librarian and a generous donor to the organisation. Vera Crook and Laurie Steinhardt have continued to provide articles of historical interest for the member newsletter, One St John. Ann Demaine undertook the task of recording the Rolls of Honour, which document the names of individuals awarded Priory Vote of Thanks, St John Commendations, the Grand Prior Badge as well as the Service Medal of The Order and the relevant Bar/s. St John (Qld) Board, the Chief Executive Officer, State Council and St John staff across the State are thanked for their assistance during The Committee extends much gratitude to Minute Secretary Faye Gledhill. The enthusiasm, time and special contribution of all Committee members ensures the St John Archives are maintained.
