1 3 Welcome Message The 23 rd European Conference on Surface Science, ECOSS 23, is held in Berlin, Germany at the Freie Universität Berlin from September 49, The ECOSS conference has a long tradition dating back to the first meeting in 1978 in Amsterdam. Recent conferences of this series took place in Vienna (1999), Madrid (2000), Krakow (2001), Malmo (2002), and Prague (2003). The ECOSS conference addresses all scientists working in the field of surface science, including basic research and applications. The conference offers an excellent opportunity to highlight recent trends as well as general aspects of surface science. The format consists of invited and contributed papers during plenary, oral and poster sessions, in addition to four accompanying symposia. With more than 1000 submitted abstracts and more than 900 participants the ECOSS 23 represents the vitality and attractiveness of surface science. Thanks to the large number of excellent contributions, we are able to present a rich scientific program of highest quality. Therefore, we hope that the conference will provide a stimulating scientific environment for exchange of newest results and ideas. We deeply regret that we must offer you a conference site which is under renovation. We could not foresee these circumstances at the time when the conference site and the date were chosen. The conference organization has spent a large effort to improve the environment inside the building. In addition, we have allocated two recently renovated lecture halls in a neighboring building. We wish you an enjoyable and rewarding conference and welcome you to Berlin, a city that provides a wealth of attractions in arts, cultural events as well as historic and modern sights. The university is located in Berlin-Dahlem, a green residential area in the south-west of Berlin, not too far away from the lake Wannsee. The Freie Universität was founded in 1948 in response to the restrictive policy that the Eastern section of Berlin was imposing on the traditional Humboldt University. This explains the choice of the name Freie Universität ( free university ). The Henry Ford Building was built in It includes the auditorium maximum with more than 900 seats and four large lectures halls with more than 200 seats each. Most oral sessions and symposia will be held in these lecture halls. The entrance lobby provides space for the poster sessions as well as for the industrial exhibition. In addition two lecture halls are available in the neighboring Business and Economics building. Public Transport The conference venue can be reached by public transport using: Subway line U3: (direction: Krumme Lanke), get off at Thielplatz. From there, it is a 20 min. walk to the Henry-Ford- Building (see map on back cover). Note that until Sunday evening (Sept. 4) you must change to a bus (U3) at station Breitenbachplatz. Local train (S-Bahn) line S1: (direction: Potsdam/Zehlendorf) get off at Lichterfelde West. From there, it is a 15 min. walk to the Henry Ford Building (see map on back cover). You may also take the bus M11 at Lichterfelde West and get off at U Thielplatz. Bus M11: (direction: Oskar-Helene-Heim) get off at U Thielplatz (510 min. walk to Henry Ford Building) Tickets The fare of a single ride within Berlin (Zone AB) costs 2,10. A day ticket (Zone AB) is 5,80. You may also purchase a ticket for public transportation during the time of the congress at the registration desk. Access from Tegel Airport (TXL) Take the bus X9 or bus 109 (direction: Hertzallee/ Zoologischer Garten), get off at Jakob-Kaiser-Platz and change to subway line U7 (direction: Rudow); change trains at Fehrbelliner Platz to line U3 (direction: Krumme Lanke), get off at Thielplatz (approx. 35 min. ride). From there, it is a 510 min. walk to the Henry-Ford-Building (see map on back cover). Access from Train Station Zoologischer Garten Take the subway line U9 (direction: Rathaus Steglitz), change trains at Spichernstraße to line U3 (direction: Krumme Lanke), get off at Thielplatz (approx. 25 min. ride time). From there it is a 510 min. walk to the Henry-Ford- Building (see map on back cover). Taxi If you want to arrange for a taxi, numbers to call are: +49 (0) or +49 (0) , otherwise please consult your hotel reception or the registration desk of the Congress. A taxi ride from Tegel airport to the conference site takes about 20 minutes ( 22,0025,00). Parking Kindly note that parking lots in the near surroundings of the Henry Ford Building are scarce.

The official poster session runs from 17:3020:00 h. To encourage further discussions, each poster should be also displayed during the next day but must be removed in the late afternoon. Oral Presentations The conference language is English. The duration of an oral presentation is limited to 15 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion. Invited presentations consist of 30 minutes talk plus 10 minutes for discussion. The duration of a plenary talk is 40 minutes plus 10 minutes for discussion. All lecture halls will be equipped with an LCD projector and a laptop. Although an overhead projector is provided for each lecture hall, an electronic presentation format is preferred. You are requested to bring your presentation in PowerPoint (or PDF) format on a CD-ROM or memory stick for a media check to the speaker-practice room (room KS2). The media check must be performed in the morning if your session is in the afternoon or on the day before, if your session is in the morning (except for Monday). The media check is open from 08:30 h16:00 h from Monday through Thursday. For the sessions on Monday morning (Sept. 5), the media check begins at 08:00 h. In general, the presentation will be loaded to the laptop in the lecture hall. Poster Session II: Wednesday, September 7, 2005, 17:3020:00 h The poster exhibition will take place in the conference building in the locations marked on the site map (see pages 138 and 236). The poster boards are 90 cm wide and 130 cm high. The material for poster mounting will be supplied. No other material should be used. For each poster session, free beverages and snacks will be offered. The Wednesday poster session is kindly sponsored by Elsevier. 5 7 ECOSS Prize The ECOSS steering committee continues with the tradition to award an ECOSS Prize for the best student paper presented at the conference. The prize consists of a certificate and 1.000, sponsored by SPECS GmbH. A student paper is defined as a paper based on a PhD thesis, which must not have been submitted to the faculty earlier, than one year before ECOSS 23 (irrespective of whether the work has already been published in part or in total). The ECOSS prize will be awarded at the conference banquet. Internet Facilities A wireless LAN is available in selected areas of the Henry Ford Building. For further information, please refer to the information available in the speakers practice room. A limited number of computers with internet access will be available to the participants (room KS2, second floor). These computers should be used no longer than 10 minutes per person. 6 ECOSS 23 8 Food and Beverages During the coffee breaks, coffee and tea will be offered free of charge in the foyer of the Henry Ford Building. For lunch or a snack you may choose the university restaurant (Mensa) or one of the restaurants or coffee shops nearby. A list of restaurants located within walking distance of the congress venue is given on the inside of the back cover. A university restaurant (Mensa, including a cafeteria) is available nearby on the Campus of the Freie Universität (see map on back side). Since it is not possible to pay cash in the Mensa, you have to buy a prepaid card (use the cashier line labelled Girovendkarte Verkauf ).
