AUSTRALIAN ONLINE & TRAVELLERS LIONS CLUB CENTENNIAL CHARTER BULLETIN CHARTER DATE: JANUARY 3 RD, 2018 SEPTEMBER 2018 We provide a unique Service Club membership and our primary focus is to retain existing Lions whose Lions Clubs may have closed and would still like to remain Lions. To welcome those Lions who would like to travel for extended periods of time within and outside Australia and still remain a Lions Family Member. To provide an option for those Lions who are unable to attend a mainstream Lions Club because they work away from home, who have health problems, or the nearest Lions Club is just too far away for then to remain Lions. Our Lions Club goals are in keeping with the humanitarian, community spirited, fun and service mindedness of Lions. Our members are dedicated to assisting other Lions Clubs in helping to make their communities a better place to live, work and grow. We currently have members from Western Australia, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and New Zealand.

PRESIDENTS REPORT SEPTEMBER 2018 Dear Fellow Lions I would like to apologise for not being present tonight. I will be in Melbourne with our youngest son Andrew who is hoping to win a million on The Hot Seat. Thank you VP Lion Ted H for taking the meeting. Lion Ted P will be posting this report in my absence. Lion Ted P and I had a very pleasant surprise last week with a visit from Lion Gwyneth and Stewart Payne. It was a nice surprise for Ted s birthday last Sunday. Whilst here we made contact with the local Lions Club and I managed to win tray of meat in their raffle. A guided tour was taken around town. Ted is an accredited Tourist Guide for the district and was able to give them a good overview. Our 9 year old granddaughter was also a visitor and took us all to the local show that was also on at the weekend. After this she gave everybody a hiding at UNO and Connect 4. Kootingal Lions will be having their Annual Art show at the beginning October. President Wayne of Kootingal Club will be letting us have further details. Please keep this in mind when making plans to travel to South West Rocks for the N1 Convention. In your correspondence you will have noted that there is a request for Past Presidents to be Guiding Lions. As this can be done through our computers please could you give the request serious consideration as it is something we can do electronically from any location we are visiting I had a very nice conversation with Lion Hester from Tasmania who had received a copy of our bulletin and found it to be very informative. Lion Gwyneth has added her to our mail out list. Have a great meeting. Yours in Lionism President Hazel

Secretary Report September 2018 Nearly the middle of September already, I m not sure where this year has gone. The 201N1 District Convention in South West Rocks will be held October 19, 20and 21 st 2018, a number of our members will be attending, and I will write a report, with pictures, for those members who are not able to attend. Stewart and I left Halls Creek Western Australia earlier than we usually do this year and we used the time to catch up with some of our members in South Australia, Victoria and NSW. We first met up with Lions Rolly and Angela who live in Ardrossan South Australia some 3529klm via National Highway 1, National Highway 87 and National Highway A87 from Halls Creek in Western Australia. Unfortunately, somewhere on this 3529klm trip we managed to shear off a bolt that attached the head of the tow hitch to the receiver on the tow vehicle, and also lost one of the tooth washers that holds the heads of the hitch up. We discovered this when we pulled up at the Caravan Park in Ardrossan SA, having not had to unhitch the caravan for some 3129klms, so we have no idea where this happened. As is our luck, we were not able to source a tooth washer in Australia (we did some 1000klms looking for the washer) so we had to have one made by a Tool Maker in Adelaide. The cost of the tooth washer to be made was $250 each, we had two made so that we had a spare. After we had organised to have this made we found on the internet we could buy 2 tooth washers, 2 bolts, 2 nuts and two spring washers for $31US plus postage. Sigh! Straight down to the hardware store and a can of gold paint was purchased and the tooth washers were painted gold! We then replaced the pin and hitch as we were not sure how much pressure had been applied to it when the bolt sheared. One side of the hitch with loose bolt The bolt sheared off, where the tooth washer should have been The gold-plated tooth washer back in position

Even so it was great to catch up with Lions Rolly and Angela at Ardrossan, this is the first time we have been able to catch up with them since 2013 and the New Lions Club forming in January Rolly and Angela were members of the Ardrossan Lions Club which unfortunately folded about 2013, they then transferred to Australian Lionsonoz and when our new Lions Club Australian Online & Travellers formed they transferred to the new Club. Rolly and Angela commented that they like the new Club as the name better reflects their position as Online Lions. Due to health reasons they no longer are able to travel. Angela has been a Lion since 1994 and Rolly since We visited the local Museum in Ardrossan where the Banner and Flag Set of the former Ardrossan Lions Club holds Pride of Place. Finally, having sorted the hitch problems we headed to Snowtown South Australia to meet up with Lion Alan and Ros. Alan has been a member of Lions since 1988, Ros is also a former Lion. Both were very active Lions at both at their Club and District Level. Unfortunately, Snowtown Lions Club also closed in 2015, Alan then transferred to Australian Lionsonoz and when our new Lions Club Australian Online & Travellers formed they transferred to the new Club.

This is also the first time we have been able to catch up with them since 2015 and the New Lions Club forming in January Lion Alan and Ros, who make the best chilly chutney in the world! We have members from South Australia, Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, New Zealand, from Western Australia when joined and now residing in Queensland. It was great to catch up with Lions Rolly and Angela and Lion Alan and Ros. We then left South Australia and headed to Victoria where we met up with Lions Janice and PDG Bernie who provided us with the best scones and a great tour around their Lifestyle Village in Mernda. PDG Bernie has ben a Lion since 1969 and Lion Janice Bernie and Janice were members of the Greensborough Lions Club which also unfortunately close around Bernie and Janice then transferred to Australian Lionsonoz and when our new Lions Club Australian Online & Travellers formed they transferred to the new Club. We have been able to catch up with Bernie and Janice at the MD Convention in Townsville this year and again in Mernda Victoria. So! from Halls Creek Western Australia to Ardrossan South Australia 3529klms, then Ardrossan to Mernda Victoria 898klms at total of 4427 klms so far. We then travelled to Grenfell New South Wales to catch up with the President and Membership Chairman of our Club Lions Hazel (Pres) and Lion Ted. President Hazel joined Lions in 2005 and Lion Ted in 2003.

We also met up with some of the Lions from Grenfell for a meat raffle, President Hazel won a lovely pork roast, which Ted cooked for us. President Hazel (with granddaughter Ruby) driving a Dodgem Car the same way as she drives her car, and her car and caravan foot to the floor flat out. There were originally 10 other cars on the floor with Hazel, they abandoned the track due to the dangerous driving of Hazel. Distance from Mernda Victoria to Grenfell New South Wales 619klms All in all, we caught up with our friends who are members of our Lions Club and to do this travelled an enjoyable 5046klms to do so! Regards Lion Gwyneth Payne

Welfare Report September 2018 Lion Stewart Payne October No Anniversary s that I am aware of October Happy Birthday to Hazel Pickwell 1st October Happy Birthday October Lion Bernie Donchi There are several our Lions who have or are still experiencing an unwanted hiccup health wise, we wish them all a speedy recovery. Lion Angela Williams, Lion Rolly Williams, Lion Ted Hughes and Lion Neil Bilney (following back surgery) Safe travels to those travelling and to everyone stay safe, stay well, stay happy and most important have fun. Remember to wear your Lions Lapel Pin everyday with Pride Lion Stewart Payne Club Welfare and Club Care Officer

Travelling Grey Nomads by Lion Dianne Hughes In March 2015 we arrived on the Sunshine Coast to help out on a Strawberry Farm called Suncoast Harvest on Bells Creek Road, Bells Creek, Qld. We have returned every year since, this being our 4 th season here, so I thought I would write an article on the process of growing Strawberries giving a basic overview of the process. At the end of every season, and that normally finishes about late October the plants are sprayed out. The plastic is then pulled up and the ground ploughed and planted with a cover crop. COVER CROP The cover crop is then ploughed into the ground ready for laying the plastic. John is in charge of the Crop Health & Management.

LAYING OF PLASTIC The fields then have to have the rows of plastic and T Tape laid. This is normally done about January and February. Getting the fields ready for laying Laying of the plastic of the Plastic At the end of every row the plastic has to be cut off and buried into the ground, just leaving the tape showing so it can be hooked up to the water pipes later.

PLANTING Once all this is done then every row has to have the holes punched, water lines hooked up, over head sprinklers placed along certain rows and hooked onto the water lines. Then planting can start. This is normally in March and is done by hand. The first day of planting for the 2018 season 50 people planted 102,797 plants Donna Is one of the Field Supervisors

GROWING AND PICKING The varieties planted were: Aussie Gem, Festival, Red Rhapsody and Splender. A total of 838,000 plants were planted this season From the time the plants are planted they are watered and feed by the T Tapes under the plastic. Picking normally starts about mid to late May. During the season there will be about 70 pickers working, 3 weight station operators and a tractor driver hauling out the full cages of picked strawberries to the packhouse for cooling down in the cold rooms before packing. The pickers sit on a 3 wheel trolley that sits over the bed and work backwards. That way they can see the berries from both sides.

PACKHOUSE Once the berries are cooled then they have to be packed to order. Suncoast Harvest evens sends Strawberries to NZ as strawberries don t grow over there in the winter. There are 36 packers in the shed split between 4 benches. Besides the packers there are 10 shed hands and this includes the Quality Controllers & Shed Manager. Strawberries waiting to be packed Suncoast Harvest packs under several different labels. One of the packers busy packing

PACKED AND READY FOR MARKET The season will finish about the end of October and the process starts all over again

This page is from the Centennial Stories. Lion Ted and myself were involved in planting some of these trees at the beginning of the project of the Lions Tree Grove. Many buckets of water were carried to each tree as it was planted. Lion Dianne Hughes Bulletin Editor.
