2 ABOUT CAPE YORK In Cape York Peninsula, the most extensive kind of land form is the flat to undulating plains. These plains are found in the south-west, west and on the east coast around Princess Charlotte Bay. As this part of the country is inundated with flood waters during the wet, most travellers to Cape York follow the Overland Telegraph Line. This road follows the high country on the eastern side of the Cape, starting from around Mt Molloy to the tip of Cape York. The most vegetation of the Cape region can be divided into several different categories, the most dominant being the eucalyptus variety. These are also melaleuca, heath, mangrove, grasslands, and of course the rainforest. The melaleuca is evident around rivers and lagoons, and after the wet season, the red and light green flowers make the waterways a pleasant and relaxing place for us to set up camp. The heath communities are common on the eastern side of the peninsula, especially through the Heathlands area. Here the Bronze Grevilleas and smaller melaleucas are abundant. From the Dulhunty River to the Jardine River on both sides of the track, the heath is host to many birds and wildlife. Most grasslands are found near the rich rainforest, north east of Coen and north of the Iron Range region. Trees and scrub don t usually grow in these areas as the grass grows up to two metres high. Those that do occur are usually stunted. One example of natural grasslands is when we pas through Piccaninny Plains, just north of the Iron Range turnoff. Rainfall extends along the Great Dividing Range and indeed to the very tip of the Cape. From Bamaga to the top we pass through the most delightful stand of rainforest. Most creeks and rivers have lowland rainforest on their fringes with vine forests and farms along their banks. Also along these banks are the rare insect-eating Pitcher Plant can be seen. Enzymes in the pitcher shaped plant digest any insects that fall into it, allowing the plant to obtain additional nutrients for its growth cycle. Iron Range National Park contains the largest remaining area of lowland rainforest in Australia. It is home to many wildlife species not found outside the Cape or New Guinea, for example the Eclectus Parrot, Green Pythons and Cuscus. The parks fascinating history includes explorer Edmund Kennedy s ill-fated 1848 expedition, gold mining and World War 2 installations. In Lakefield National Park, salt and marine plains are evident after crossing Salt Water Creek. These plains stretch for miles, practically treeless with countless anthills dotting the landscape. In the lagoons and billabongs all over this great park, many varieties of water fowl are evident with Burdekin Ducks and Magpie Geese are very common. All around the water-holes, Jabirus, Brolgas, Sarus Cranes, Herons and Egrets, sometimes mass in large numbers, feeding on the plentiful food provided in these areas. East of Lakefield National Park, the vegetation changes again. From alluvial plains to eucalypt forests. As we get closer to Cooktown, we travel through mountain forest. Leaving Cooktown, heading towards Cairns, the highland / lowlands rainforest is the most beautiful in North Queensland. This rainforest stretches from Cooktown to the Daintree River.

3 ITINERARY DAY 1 ALBURY CAIRNS MONDAY 6TH JUNE, 2016 Welcome aboard Martins Touring Coach for departure from Lavington Centro Griffith Road 7.30am, Albury Rail at 7.45am, and Wodonga Plaza, Smythe Street 8.00am for our tour to the Tip of Australia! Transfer to Tullamarine where we connect with our Jetstar Flight JQ950 departing 2.30pm for our direct flight to Cairns. Upon our arrival at 5.50pm, transfer to our accommodation. D Accommodation: Pullman Cairns International Ph: (07) DAY 2 CAIRNS COOKTOWN TUESDAY 7TH JUNE Our adventure is about to start! After an early morning pick up, we travel north along the scenic Captain Cook Highway, through the World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation, where the rainforest meets the reef. Then making our way along the jungle shrouded Bloomfield Track (road conditions permitted), we stop at the unique Lion s Den Hotel, pass the mysterious Black Mountain, arriving at the old gold port of Cooktown, where we visit Captain Cooks Landing, before settling in to our accommodation with ensuite facilities. DAY 3 COOKTOWN - LAKEFIELD NATIONAL PARK - MUSGRAVE WEDNESDAY 8TH JUNE Heading west into the outback, we travel over the legendary Battle Camp Range to the Old Laura Homestead and Lakefield National Park (road conditions permitting), a haven for the many birds and animals native to this area. Lagoons, billabongs, and wide river lakes are home to both fresh and saltwater crocodiles. The afternoon finds us arriving at our overnight accommodation at The Old Musgrave Telegraph Station. (Accommodation with shared bathroom facilities) DAY 4 MUSGRAVE - COEN ARCHER RIVER WEIPA THURSDAY 9TH JUNE This morning, we continue north stopping off at the historic frontier gold town of Coen and the picturesque Archer River, before making our way to the bauxite-mining town of Weipa. Enjoy the spectacular sunset over the Gulf of Carpentaria. Our accommodation with ensuite facilities tonight is at the Heritage Resort. DAY 5 WEIPA - WENLOCK RIVER BRAMWELL STATION FRIDAY 10TH JUNE We experience the Weipa Mine Tour -The Largest Bauxite Mine in the World this morning - a fascinating and informative tour of this enormous open cut mining site and the remote mining town of Weipa. The tour covers just about everything we might want to know about the Western Cape Region and its history, plus a comprehensive insight into the whole process of mining and a chance to see the enormous mining equipment, trucks, locomotives and other plant used on the 2,590 square km site. After lunch, we head for our overnight accommodation at a true blue Aussie cattle station, Bramwell Station with ensuite facilities (12 rooms only). All other rooms have shared bathroom facilities. BD DAY 6 BRAMWELL FRUIT BAT FALLS CAPE YORK SATURDAY 11TH JUNE After an early start, we head north travelling along part of the Old Telegraph Track to arrive at Fruit Bat Falls for lunch. Relax, swim, and enjoy this unique area with its enchanting waterfall. Then northwards across the Jardine River, to arrive at Cape York! We will be staying at Seisia. Seisia is ideally located for our next few days, being within walking distance from the Seisia Wharf, the departure point for the ferry to Thursday Island and is a famous fishing spot. Our accommodation at Seisia Holiday Park are cottages with ensuite facilities (13 rooms only). All other rooms have shared bathroom facilities. DAY 7 CAPE YORK - SOMERSET SUNDAY 12TH JUNE An unforgettable day is ahead of us! Stand at the very top of mainland Australia. We then visit Somerset (road conditions permitting), once the home of the legendary Jardine family. We enjoy lunch on palm fringed Anchorage Beach which overlooks the Albany Passage. A walk on the beach completes our day before returning to Seisia.

4 DAY 8 CAPE YORK THURSDAY ISLAND CAIRNS MONDAY 13TH JUNE An early morning departure today as we cruise through island studded straits to explore our northern community, Thursday Island. Here we will be taken on a informative guided bus tour of the island and its picturesque Harbour, once home to the romantic pearl lugger fleet. We then board the plane at Horn Island for a scenic flight back to Cairns where we will be transferred to the hotel. BD Accommodation: Pullman Cairns International Ph: (07) DAY 9 CAIRNS TUESDAY 14TH JUNE Today we have a free day at leisure. Perhaps you would like to take a ride on the historic Kuranda Train to Kuranda Station and return on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Maybe a swim out on the Great Barrier Reef or a day tour to the Atherton Tablelands. The choices are plenty and all yours to make. Any tours today are at your own expense. Tonight we ll join together to discuss our day s activities over dinner. BD Accommodation: Pullman Cairns International Ph: (07) DAY 10 CAIRNS - SYDNEY - ALBURY WEDNESDAY 15TH JUNE Unfortunately our adventure is coming to an end. Today we board our Virgin Flight 10.05am to return to Sydney at 2.35pm. Our final flight departs 4.45pm from Sydney arriving in Albury at 6.10pm with some fantastic memories of our time up north! B PLEASE NOTE This is an outback tour which will require some walking. Passengers should be reasonably agile to undertake the tour.
