6 Air Shows HOW MANY PEOPLE ATTEND AIR SHOWS? Based on the information the International Council of Air Shows has gathered through their Event Organizer Survey, they estimate that over 20 million spectators attend air shows throughout North America each year. WHO TYPICALLY ATTENDS AIR SHOWS? Air shows draw large numbers of demographically attractive spectators - a well-educated, affluent group of men, women and children of all ages. Close to 70 percent of the audience at an air show has had some college education. More than 54 percent of spectators report an income of $50,000 or more. The average spectator is just under 39 years of age, but more than 55 percent of spectators are between 30 and 50. ARE AIR SHOWS SAFE? Air shows offer a consistently and historically safe environment for millions of spectators each year. 8 Team Bios Randy Howell President of Airshows America Randy Howell has over 16,000 hours of flight time. His flight experience ranges from J-3 Cubs to Boeing 747s, and includes foreign military jets. Randy has flown for United Airlines for 24 years, flying the DC-8, DC-10, B-727, B-737, and B-747. He is a Formula One Gold race pilot, flying an all-composite Grove GR-7 among others. Randy holds low-level formation aerobatic waivers in the MiG-17, L-39, and other military jets. Randy earned a B.S. Degree from the University of Florida in Aeronautical Engineering. Randy is the President and Founder of Airshows America. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: B.S. 9 Dean Wright entered the Air Force in 1987 upon graduation from the US Air Force Academy. Since then Dean has logged over 3,300 hours of fighter time on assignments in Europe and the Pacific and deployed to Turkey in 1991 in support of Operation Desert Storm. Dean has won several Top Gun awards for his air-to-ground gunnery skills while flying the A-10 Warthog and as a Royal Air Force exchange officer in the GR.7 Harrier. Lt. Col. Wright also served three years with the US Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds, as Lead Solo flying the F-16C Fighting Falcon. As such, Dean has performed in over 160 air shows and enjoys using air shows to discuss Air Force career opportunities with young adults. Currently, Dean is flying the F-117 Stealth Fighter out of Holloman AFB, New Mexico. Total Time in Military Jet Aircraft: 3,300+ hours Team Bios Lt. Col. Dean Wilbur Wright Lead Pilot #1 Volodymyr MiG Chetverous Right Wingman #2 Volodymyr Chetverous is an accomplished aerobatic jet pilot with over 3,300 hours of fighter time and has twice won national team aerobatic competitions in the former Soviet Union. He came from the Ukraine to join Airshows America. Having soloed an L-29 Jet at age seventeen, he served as a fighter pilot, flight instructor aircraft such as the MiG-15, MiG-17, L-29, and L-39, and Right Wingman in the nine ship Jet Demonstration Team, Team Zaporighya, in the former Soviet Union. Volodymyr was awarded a Masters Degree in Aerobatic Competition and brings a wealth of aircraft knowledge including avionics, jet engines, maintainance and flight experience to Airshows America. 10 John Posson has over 17,000 hours of flight time. His flight experience ranges from Piper Cubs to numerous Airliners and Military Jets. John has extensive experience as a commercial airline pilot, formation aerobatic team pilot and as a competition aerobatic pilot. He is currently a Boeing 737 Captain for United Airlines, has experience as a member of a three-ship formation aerobatic team, has competed for 10 years as an unlimited aerobatic competition pilot and was a former Alaskan Bush Pilot. John was chosen as an Airshows America team pilot in 2000 due to his formation skills, his professionalism, and his meticulous attention to detail in his flying. John earned his B.S. Degree from San Diego State University in Business Administration. Total Flight Time: 17,000+ hours Team Bios John Boards Posson Left Wingman #3 Col. Paul Sticky Strickland Slot #4 Paul Strickland entered the Air Force in 1983, graduating with honors from Officer Candidate School. Paul has had a distinguished and successful Air Force career obtaining the rank of full Colonel and logging over 3,900 hours in military aircraft. Paul served with various squadrons in the US, Europe, and Korea, flying numerous combat missions during Operation Deny Flight over Bosnia, Operation Northern Watch over Iraq, and supporting Operation ALLIED FORCE over Kosovo as operations director, Combined Air Ops Center in Italy. In 1991, Paul was named to the USAF Air Demonstration Squadron Thunderbirds as the #4, Slot pilot, Instructor Pilot, Flight Examiner, and Safety officer. While with the Thunderbirds, he logged over 160+ air shows throughout the United States and two overseas tours, flying in 11 European countries (and the first ever USAF demonstration in Hungary and Poland), and seven South American countries. 11 John King holds a commercial pilot certificate and has over 2,000 hours of flight time. John has logged time in over 50 different single and multi-engine aircraft models including a variety of competition aerobatic aircraft. John also holds a type rating in the L-39 Jet flown by the Patriots. John has extensive experience as an aerobatic pilot, an international aerobatic judge and flight instructor. Bitten by the aerobatic bug in 1990, he has experience as both lead and wing pilot of a three-ship formation aerobatic team and has competed in aerobatics for 14 years in the unlimited category. John was chosen by Airshows America as coach and safety coordinator in 2000 based on his formation flying experience, and focus on safety, along with his business development and organizational skills. John earned his B.S. degree from the University of San Francisco in computer science. John Sky King Team Coach and Safety Coordinator Total Flight Time: 2,000+ hours Team Bios Jon Jughead Counsell Announcer/ Media Pilot #5 Jon Counsell is a military and civilian pilot with experience in over 35 types of aircraft, gliders, and helicopters. Major Jon Counsell entered the Air Force in 1991 upon graduating from Central Washington University ROTC as a Distinguished Graduate. He has logged over 2000 hours in the F-15C and the T-6 Texan II. Jon s assignments have included flying North American Air Defense (NORAD) missions over Alaska in the F-15C, and instructing in the T-6 with the Navy at Pensacola NAS. He is currently assigned to Mountain Home AFB in Idaho, flying the F-15C and in July of 2006 will start an assignment in Osan, Korea as the 7th Air Force, Chief of Safety. In addition to his flying duties, Jon is a motivational speaker at the Air Force s Squadron Officer College and public forums and has been featured on Dateline NBC and the Discovery Channel, Impact.
