3 How Time Slips Away Potentate s Message Like the song says How Time Slips Away. My year as Potentate is certainly slipping away much too quickly, but hopefully we are getting some things accomplished. We attended the Mid Winter meetings in Bangor, ME. We made arrangements regarding accommodations for Nobles and Ladies during the NESA meetings scheduled for mid September. We trust Philae will be well represented; it s not too far and great shopping for the ladies. We look forward to a good contingent of Nobles and Philae Units on parade. Specific details will be outlined in additional issue of the Philae Shriners News as well as on our website. We have accepted invitations to various Potentate Invitational s, including Rhode Island Shriners and Karnak in Montreal. We were well received and enjoyed the weekends. We also visited Philae Shrine Clubs in company with other Divan Members, including clubs in Halifax, Dartmouth, Truro and Amherst. All clubs are scheduled for visitation. We had the opportunity to attend the Daughters of the Nile installation and brought greetings from your Divan and Philae members. A couple of very important committees are being formulated. Most particularly a Facilities Committee, which is to be established to oversee the operations of Philae s Connolly St. Building and operations; with particular regards to building maintenance, instituting security for the Philae Lounge. A programme will be established to operate the building within business plan and operate the building as a business. Another important committee being established is the Search Committee. Representatives from the various Philae jurisdictions are being contacted to seek out and secure proper persons to operate your Temple in upcoming years. Immediately we will require a new Recorder and Oriental Guide. Your Temple will need to appoint a new Fezeroo Chairman, as well as a new Ceremonial Potentate. The very knowledgeable lady in our office Denise MacDonald has indicated she will be retiring in a year or two. The search committee will have a full slate of responsibilities. Members of your Divan will soon hit the road with the Road Show. This group plan to visit each and every club. They will be brainstorming, seeking input both pro and con to increase the rapport and communication between Philae and its members. How better to serve all our members and operate our Temple to the happiness of all. Membership is still our most pressing problem. We must all become involved and contact Masons, speak at Masonic functions and let them all know what we are about. It cannot be left to the Membership Chairman and his various club membership committee members. We look forward to having class of at least 25 members of our December Ceremonial. If everyone replaced themselves what a class of candidates we would have. Try and sign up one Masonic brother. As previously outlined to you, our Temple and Luxor Temple of New Brunswick will be holding a joint Potentate s Invitational. This is scheduled for Charlottetown, PEI during the annual Old Home Week August Look for more detailed information on our website soon. This could be the biggest gathering of Shriners and Units in many years. A busy and fun filled summer is about to get underway. Many parades are scheduled commencing with the Potentates Apple Blossom Parade. Stretch your able tow and be in attendance as often as you can. The annually published Philae Diary should be in your hands within the next few days. This is an invaluable source of information outlining club meeting times, venues, parade times and locations and social event information. The long awaited Year Book is getting closer and should be delivered very soon. Please keep in contact and up-todate. Attend any stated meetings, executive meetings, hospital committee meetings and club meetings as you can; you are part of Philae and welcome to attend and participate. Until next time, Sincerely, W.H. Bill Scrymgeour Summer 2012 Philae Shriners News 3

4 Oriental Guide How Quickly Time is Flying By Lost in the Desert Dear Ladies & Nobles, The last few months our Divan have been very productive as we prepare to embark on a new endeavour, the Philae Shrine Road Show which will travel across both provinces. Over the next few weeks, you will receive a letter and/or from the Temple advising you of a Road Show close to you. We are working with the club executives to canvass dates and locations. We sincerely hope that all Nobles and their Ladies will come out to this one-day session which will cover many topics of interest needed for successful business planning for the Temple. This includes, membership, fundraising, developing a mission statement, finances & budget preparation, donations, public relations, Temple leadership and what the Lady of a Shriner can expect. This session will be done through facilitation allowing everyone to actively participate in the future of your Temple. Understanding that membership in our philanthropy is a key to our success and future; we are asking that each Shriner bring at least one Master Mason and his Lady to this session. We are planning to use these sessions to tell the story of the Shrine and our affiliations to the hospitals. We will have membership kits available and will explain what they need to do, if they are interested in joining our great organization. In 1980 we had 1684 Nobles; today, we have 1047 Nobles. I encourage our clubs to use this opportunity to recruit new club members as I understand that 60% of our Philae Shriners do not belong to a club or unit. Remember, if we are to attract our Masonic brothers, we need to make sure we participate fully in our Blue Lodges. As we begin this change, we must point out the importance of maintaining our Temple; it is our identity and we need to ensure that we leave these assets in the hands of our future brothers. We cannot continue to rely on our endowment funds to cover the expenditures each year, we must all commit to looking after our home and our investment. To do this, we need to focus on our fundraising activities and rather than adding new ones, we need to capitalize on what we have and do it well. Before I close, I want to talk about Fun! In 1872 when the Shrine was formed, it was all about a group of Masons who wanted to have a fun side to Masonry. The hospitals didn t come into play until 1922, some fifty years later. We can t lose site that our fraternity is about fellowship and fun and our mission is the hospitals. We are all volunteers on a mission to support our hospitals but we need to keep our legacy of having fun paramount. Come out and have fun at the Apple Blossom Parade on Saturday, June 2, 2012!! Fraternally yours, Robert J. Kirby Oriental Guide, Philae Shriners kirbyr@eastlink.ca (902) Addresses Unknown Listed below are the names and addresses of those Nobles Lost in the Desert, which is to say we do not have a current address. 10 Chief Rabban Committees are Active and Open Fellow Nobles Your executive has been meeting regularly since our first meeting on Feb. 28th. The executive meetings are open to all nobles. This is the time to express your concerns in a timely fashion. You can attend in person or send your concerns through one of the executive. The normal committees are active and also open to input from the nobility. We have struck four new committees this year. 1. Facilities Committee under the chairmanship of Noble Ken Conrod. They are responsible for but not limited to: temple maintenance, rentals, overall operations, policy and security. 2. The Fundraising Committee under the Chairmanship of Assistant Rabban Noble Rob Buchan. They are mandated with developing long and short term fundraising proposals, goals and strategy etc for Philae. 3. The Search Committee under the direction of Ill Sir Bill has been mandated to finding nobles who will be willing to offer their names for future openings on the Divan, Executive and Committees. 4. The "Road Show" Committee is chaired by our "new kid on the block" Our Oriental Guide Noble Rob Kirby, This is a main component of our "Five Year Plan". We are enlisting the help of all our nobles in forming a strategy to take us forward. We are hoping to take advantage of our existing clubs in various parts of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island to act as a venue where all our nobles both individual, members of the clubs and members of other interested Masonic bodies could participate in an open and frank discussion. The results of this endeavor will help us form a platform for our evolving strategy as we move forward in an attempt to formulate a positive foundation for our temples future. Please! open your doors when asked to support this event and join with us in encouraging as much involvement as possible from all the nobles in you area. This will be a brain-storming session and all ideas are welcome. There have been some comments about the traveling that is done by the Divan and executive. Some assume that Philae pays for it. That is not the case. When one or more of us travel to visitations, Club meetings, executive, hospital, Divan or stated meetings etc. It is at our own expense. You have a dedicated executive and I ask you to please support their efforts on your behalf. Since the last printing of the Fez, I have attended (chaired) three executive meetings, Divan & hospital committee meetings, and the March 10th stated meeting. In March I also attended the mid-winter NSA meetings in Bangor, Maine. The last weekend in March, Lady Marjorie and I brought greetings to the "Sphinx visitation" in Hartford, Conn. on behalf of Ill Sir Bill and Philae. In April, Lady Marjorie and I brought greetings to the "Melha Visitation" in Springfield, Mass. We had an opportunity to tour the hospital during this visitation. While at the hospital, we met a very young patient and his family. I attended the Central Club meeting on April 16th with other members of the Divan. On April 21st Lady Marjorie (PQ) and I attended the installation of the new Queen and officers of Athena Temple #149 Daughters of the Nile. The last week-end of the month we attended the "Rhode Island Visitation" where Ills Sir Bill brought greetings. The majority of the 2011 Potentates along with our own Lady Janet Miller came to honor the 2012 Potentate who had to stay back a year as he fought and won his battle with Cancer. His "should have been counterparts" made a touching scene as they lined up in front of the head table to honor him. 11 Chief Rabban Committees are Active and Open (continued from Page 10) The first weekend in May I brought greetings from Ills Sir Bill to the Grand Chapter/Grand Council "Annual Communications". Due to other commitments we were unable to attend the visitation at Karnak in Montreal on Mother's Day Weekend. We did however stop by the Montreal Hospital on our way to Ottawa. We dropped off several "clear leaf bags" filled with colorful neck, arm and leg supports (C shaped Pillows), bags of stuffed toys including huge teddy bears, jungle pants, pillow cases and shorts donated by Athena Temple #149. The staff were delighted to receive the items and said that they would put them to good use. When returning form Ottawa we took the time to drop by the site of the new hospital. Two of the hospitals are showing real signs of progress. Ours will not be started until Wednesday May 16 saw us back in Halifax to attend the official visit of Ill Sir Bill to the Halifax/Dartmouth joint event. We enjoyed a lovely roast beef dinner catered by the Daughters of the Nile. Thursday May 17, Ill Sir Bill, High Priest and Prophet John Cameron and I visited the Island Shrine Club. It has been a very busy few months. The Divan and executive committee have been working diligently on your behalf. The committees new and old have been putting many hours into their responsibilities and are assertive in their planning. Attending Visitations at other temples keeps the bonds strong in our North-East We need each other to support the Springfield, Boston and new Montreal Hospitals. These bonds of friendship and mutual respect go a long way in strengthening our association. Our counterparts group for 2013 is vibrant, cohesive, dedicated and a pleasure to be a part of. REMEMBER, You are Philae Temple and Philae needs each and every noble to feel ownership and pride in their Temple. Philae wants each noble to feel engaged and excited about the future of the Temple and how they can makes it happen. In traveling to other temples, each visit has offered a chance to learn something new, observe different ways of doing things, but most of all seeing that "The Shrine" is alive and well in the North East. We will be having our visitation in August. Please refer to Ills Sir Bills announcement in this edition of the Fez. These visitations are open to all nobles and ladies who wish to attend and enjoy the fellowship. At other Temples this is the big event of the year. We have learned some new jokes these past two months but have found out that real life events can sometime be very funny. 17 Shriners Hospital for Children - Boston Young Philanthropist Gives Generously Submitted by: Shriners Hospitals for Children Boston, Public Relations Typically, birthdays are a time for celebration and for kids that means cake and presents. But instead of receiving presents for his birthday, one young philanthropist made a big decision to donate all of his gifts to the patients at Shriners Hospitals for Children Boston. said that they encourage their children to learn about giving back at a young age. Justin s family thought Shriners was the perfect place to do so after the great care Justin received when he was younger. Justin s father, Chad Demars, reflected on their experience at Shriners saying, It s comforting to know that there s lots of support here for people going through a hard time. Justin s donation not only impressed the staff and families at Shriners but it also caught the attention of the local media. During his visit in February, WBZ Radio and WBZ TV came in to interview Justin and his family. In case you missed the broadcast, Justin s story can be found on the channel s website. Justin Demars. Photo by Sue Brogna Justin Demars, a former Shriners patient, is a five year old with a giving spirit far beyond his years. Justin first came to Shriners when he was 10 months old and suffered burns on both hands from touching a steam radiator when he was just learning how to stand. Four years later, he returned with his parents and three siblings to donate all the presents he collected at his 5th birthday party. When asked how the idea came about, Justin s parents Senior Director of Public and Community Relations at SHC Boston and the Demars family. Photo by Sue Brogna. D. A. 22 Philae Phunnies A man is walking through the recreation ground of his local park, when he notices a huge fight in full fury on the football field he is passing. What s going on? he asks a spectator watching from the sideline. The other replies: It s a match between the Shriners and the Knights of Columbus. What s the score? asks the first man. I don t know, it s a secret! ***** A small Masonic lodge had had a string of bad luck. It was preparing to initiate a candidate on steamy evening in June and its air conditioner had stopped working. After sweating their way through part of the work, The Master had asked the candidate what he most desired? The candidate replied a beer! At this juncture the WM., being startled, whispered light to the candidate. Ok, the candidate replied, a Lite beer. 22 Philae Shriners News Summer 2012
