Getting to know you Who s in the room? What is your interest in Sport Hosting? What do you hope to learn from this session?

Why does we support and encourage Sport Hosting? Hosting sport events provides an opportunity for communities, regions, and the province to: facilitate sport development, build capacity within sport clubs and Provincial Sport Organizations, increase exposure and raise the profile of sport, and create lasting legacies for sport in Nova Scotia.

Regional, national, and international level sport events can be catalysts for advancing the priorities of sport in NS (Participation / Capacity / Excellence / Collaboration). NS Health Promotion and Protection also recognizes that the benefits of hosting sport events extend well beyond our mandate to include economic, social and cultural benefits.

Sport Tourism Sport is a major industry, and is a reason people travel. Whether it is the world s high performance athletes traveling to the Olympics or their sport s world championships, or a family traveling with their son or daughter to a weekend regional event, two conditions apply: 1) They are tourists when they travel more than 80 km and/or stay overnight. 2) Sport is the reason they travel - they would not have traveled to that location had it not been for that specific event.

Sport Tourism Con t The scale of the sport tourism marketplace is significant: The Sub-Committee on the Study of Sport in Canada estimated that there are over 200,000 sport events that occur annually in Canada1. 9.6m Canadians regularly participate in sport, either as athlete, coach, official or volunteer2. The Canadian Tourism Commission estimates that sport travel in Canada is valued at $1.3billion annually.

What would be your reasons/motivation for hosting a sport event in your community?

Important Considerations Is the event a good fit? Will it achieve the goals of the sport and community Size, scope and level of the event Facilities Accommodations Required services Resources and support required Financial Human (staff and/or volunteers) Partners

HPP Sport Hosting Program Goals To increase the development opportunities for Nova Scotia s athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers by hosting sport events in Nova Scotia. To raise the profile of amateur sport in Nova Scotia by hosting more sport events in Nova Scotia. To strengthen the Nova Scotia sport system through legacies achieved by hosting. To support sport events that make a significant contribution to HPP s mandate.

Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Mission To increase Canadian capacity to attract and host sport tourism events To establish Canada as a preferred sport tourism destination. To enhance the image and profile of the sport tourism industry. To facilitate networking, educational and communications opportunities. To develop and facilitate access to industry tools. To build investment in sport tourism from the public and private sectors. To coordinate research and data collection of activity within the sport tourism industry.
