2 In honour of Canada s 150 th, we invite you and your family and friends to celebrate Trail with the Trail Celebrates Canada 150 Passport. The purpose of the passport is to highlight Trail s unique traits by: Building a vibrant and healthy community with the broadest possible engagement of all Canadians; Inspiring a deeper understanding about the people, places and events that shape our communities and our country; and, Encouraging participation in community initiatives, activities and events to mark Canada s 150 th. The list includes (in no particular order) areas, activities, events and information in and about Trail. Activities and events are specific to July 1, 2017 through December 31, HOW TO USE THE PASSPORT While participating in the passport s activities, take a selfie, or a photo of you and your family and friends. Use #TrailCanada150 to post to Keep track of your activities by placing your completion date next to each item. You can find more information about the activities, venues and areas mentioned in the passport using the City of Trail website the Trail Parks & Recreation Leisure Guide (available online or at the Trail Aquatic & Leisure Centre), or the other websites we have provided in the passport. Although the list is lengthy, there are many other things to do and see. We inspire you to add to the list using the spaces on page 12. You can enter to win prizes by completing the entry forms on the pages at the back of the passport. Drop off your completed entry forms at the Trail Aquatic & Leisure Centre or Trail City Hall. Be sure to check the entry dates on the forms. Prizes and winners will be announced at contest time. Good luck! HAPPY AND FUN CANADA HAVE 150!
3 PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND SPORTS We are fortunate to live in a city with first-rate community recreation programs and facilities offering diverse and active lifestyles. Our favourable four-season climate makes it worthwhile to take time to explore your Trail. Take part in any of the suggestions below and share your experiences on social media using #TrailCanada Take a dip at one of the many Toonie Swims at the Trail Aquatic & Leisure Centre. See the Fall/Winter Trail Parks & Recreation Leisure Guide for toonie swim times! 2. Hike or bike the Bluffs Loop Trail, starting in Miral Heights. See for trail map. 3. Reach the Canadian flag at the top of the Sunningdale Trail. See for trail map. 4. Reach the Canadian flag at the top of the Raven s Rock/McQuarrie Creek Trail above the hospital. See the for trail map. 5. Take in the amazing view from the top of the Rusty Chainsaw Trail, just off the Bluffs Trail. See the for trail map. 6. Visit Kiwanis Beaver Creek Park and walk the trail below the Trail Regional Airport. 7. Learn to play a game of pickleball at the Butler Park tennis courts. Ask the Trail Parks & Recreation Department how to borrow free equipment. 8. Challenge one of your friends to a game of tennis at the Butler Park tennis courts. 9. Find them on Facebook to inquire. 11. If you re not a Trail Smoke Eaters fan already, this season is the time to get on board. Friday, Sept. 8 is the Home Opener! Already have some swag? Post a photo! 14. Plan to participate in a tour of the the NEW Trail Smoke Eaters Dressing Room. Watch for the details this fall on the team s Facebook page or at Enjoy a Greater Trail Minor Hockey League Tournament. Details at Time yourself for one lap (400 metres), running or walking at the Haley Park track. 17. Gather some friends and try disc golf at Centennial Park in Glenmerry. 18. Plan to participate in the Terry Fox Run in September at Gyro Park. 19. Watch or try a curling game at Trail s Curling Rink in the Trail Memorial Centre.
4 20. Cruise the concourse around the top level of the Trail Memorial Centre. A great walking or running loop when the weather isn t cooperating. 21. Walk, run or cycle the 2km Bridges Loop via the Columbia River Skywalk and the Victoria Street Bridge. 22. Challenge your friends to a bocce game in a local park, or spectate a competitive match at Trail s Bocce Facility in the Gulch. 23. Borrow some of the City s recreation equipment from the Gyro Park concession while you re visiting the park. 24. Build a sand castle at the Gyro Park beach. Post a picture, we want to see it! (Check for any beach closures) 25. Throw a frisbee with some family or friends. Post a video or photo on social media using #TrailCanada When the snow arrives, go for a toboggan ride at Centennial Park. Safety first! Read the signs before you sled! 27. Watch or participate in a street hockey game in one of Trail s great neighbourhoods. 28. Who is the Fieldhouse (located next to J.L. Crowe) named after? Sharpen your skates for the Halloween Free Skate on Saturday, October 28 from 1:00 to 2:30pm in the Kids Rink at the Trail Memorial Centre. 5 TRAIL IN HISTORY We are very proud of Trail s unique history. We encourage you to visit Trail through a historical perspective using the suggestions below. Share your experiences on social media using #TrailCanada Explore Trail s Sports Hall of Memories on the Red Floor in the Trail Memorial Centre. 35. Tour Trail s neighbourhoods through a historical perspective. Look for the Trail Historical Society s informational signs, located in each neighbourhood. 36. Take a picture of Trail s Old Bridge from the Columbia River Skywalk. 37. Learn what shaped Trail s first 100 years through Trail s impressive building murals. Why not post a photo of your favourite! #TrailCanada The Cenotaph is an important structure to remember those who gave their lives in World War I, World War II and Korea. What year was it constructed? 39. Polenta Prowl? Cannelloni Canter? Find out what these mean when you do a walking tour of Trail s Rock Walls, created by the Rock Wall Project Entusiastico Society. Do you know there are more than 20 of these plaques in the downtown area? 43. The Kootenay Hotel was a landmark in Trail and the first to provide the town s traditional spaghetti dinners. What happened to this hotel? 44. The Gulch is a unique part of Trail; it s the foundation of Trail s large Italian community. Visit the Gulch History Kiosk to learn more. Share your experiences on social media using #TrailCanada The Columbia River is a vital part of the area s recreational, ecological, economical, and cultural environment. How long is this river? 66. How many dams does the Columbia River pass through? 67. While strolling along the river walk, Gyro Park or downtown, take time to read the dedication plaques on the various memorial benches. 68. Take a river walk stroll from Gyro Park to Sunningdale. 69. Take note of what you see during a stroll through Gyro Park at different times of day - nature, children playing, the beautiful landscape! 70. Take in Trail Community in Bloom s beautiful garden beds and hanging baskets. Trail is a National (2010), an International (2015) Communities in Bloom winner and a 2017 Class of Champions Finalist. See if you can spot the river kayakers in the Columbia River. Watch for them around Gyro Park or across from the Waneta Plaza. 78. Share your experiences on social media using #TrailCanada Shop and stroll at the Trail Market on the Esplanade, hosted by the City of Trail and the United Way, every second Friday from 10am to 2pm until September. After dusk, find a spot to watch the creatively sequenced Victoria Street Bridge lights. Do you know many lights are installed on the bridge? 95. Shop and support local businesses - Visit a local business that you have never been to before Take a selfie with an employee from a Trail business. Be sure to get consent first.
