1 SPECIAL SNORIDERS SSA REPORT RECORD PAYOUTS THANKS FOR A JOB WELL DONE LAST SEASON BY BARRY BRADSHAW, Chairman Here we go again he sar of anoher snowmobile season. I seems like we jus go hrough las year s grea long season. Forecasers are predicing almos he same for his upcoming winer, so here s hoping i will be close; hen again, we never know wha Moher Naure will bring. I wan o sar by menioning he payous going o all he grooming clubs in Saskachewan. I believe i o be he mos uniform payou ha we have ever had wih grea and early snow condiions hroughou he enire province making i happen. As mos of he clubs know we had a record number of sled regisraions sold his pas season. This record payou was needed and alhough all clubs go a decen payou, i didn mean ha all clubs go an increase in heir payou. In fac, a few clubs go less han las season due o he fac ha he payous wen o more clubs hroughou he province. I wan o hank all he clubs in he province for a job well done las season wih all heir hard voluneer work in keeping heir rails up o he bes of heir abiliy considering he long season we had. Also, I wan o hank all he grassroos snowmobilers who regisered heir sleds so ha $70 from ha regisraion fee can go direcly back o he grooming clubs who mainain our rail sysem. In comparing he monies received from he rail fund ha is paid ou o each club wih a club s acual expenses, our records show ha we sill have, on he average, a club defici of approximaely 30 o 40 per cen. Now if you include all he voluneer hours he defici increases o up o 60+ per cen. All clubs sill have o use a remendous amoun of voluneer help in order o keep he rails in place. Proper rail signing has also pu pressure on voluneers, bu i absoluely had o be done. Trail signing is being brough up o an accepable sandard across he province. Afer he long season las year he voluneer help was geing pushed o he limi. The only way ha I can see i levelling ou is o have an increase in he fee on he regisraion or, in black and whie, every snowmobiler has o pay a few dollars more o ride he rails. Saskachewan, wih some of he bes rails, has one of he lowes coss o snowmobile in Canada. Our neighbours nex door in Manioba now pay $125 for a season rail pass. He is very deserving of hese awards as he has been a snowmobiler his enire young life. Wih Connal, i is no jus abou riding bu also abou ensuring he rails are clear of rees and here is sufficien wood available a he warm-up shelers. When you sar ha fire o warm up a he shelers, chances are Connal had somehing o do wih he wood being here. His family has insilled in Connal a responsibiliy and love for he fores and everyhing wihin is boundaries. A huge hank you o he Saskachewan Snowmobile Associaion for anoher grea rail fund payou. Big River Timber Trails Sno Riders BY BARRY NONTELL Members of he Big River Timber Trails Sno Riders have never really sopped hinking abou snowmobiling over he summer. The 2012/13 season was a banner year wih above-normal snow accumulaion and probably he longes season on record. The summer of 2013 brough an unusually large amoun of rain in June and early July, creaing issues of flooding, beaver aciviy and rail damage from ATV use. The balance of he year has been very dry wih always a risk of fores fire hazard bu has allowed our rails o dry up so we will be able o ge fall rail cleanup, signing, wood cuing, ec. in place for he new season. The club members have planned an early winer snowmobile informaion and voluneer appreciaion evening wih daes sill o be announced. We plan o promoe safe snowmobiling, recrui pas and new members, and offer informaion abou clubs fuure plans a his meeing o help keep all local sledders and businesses informed wihin our grea communiy. Big River Timber Trails Sno Riders have made plans o aend he annual snowmobile show in Saskaoon his November o help promoe snowmobiling in Big River and area. However, our club is organized and ready when he ime comes. The new execuive has been making plans his summer and i looks like an exciing year ahead. Wih he new Grea Blue Heron Provincial Park being proclaimed his summer, he agencies we will work under have changed, which means here will be paperwork o adjus; however, i won affec any of our rail locaions. Our regular meeings are sill he hird Tuesday evening and he reorganizaion meeing is in Ocober. Plans are in progress for a cleaning bee followed by a supper for all hose helping. We are also awaiing approval o prepare our landing sies for he Prairie Women on Snowmobiles BY CAROL LUEKEN I is has been a busy summer for he execuive of Prairie Women on Snowmobiles geing ready for Mission The dae of he mission has been se for January 30 hrough o February 7, 2014, wih he kick-off banque being held in Prince Alber. This mission promoes he safe recreaion of snowmobiling hroughou his wonderful province, while a he same ime raising funds for breas cancer research. In oal, over he pas 13 missions, Prairie Women on Snowmobiles has conribued over $2 million owards breas cancer research. Thanks again for all he suppor hroughou he province. Plans are already underway o ge a work bee ogeher as soon as he farmers wrap up harves and o ge some wood supplies buil up a he shelers for he winer. You can never ge ha chore sared oo early. Vegeaion around he shelers will need o be cu as well as debugging, sweeping, dusing, cleaning he windows, replenishing he gues books and checking he supplies. The groomer and drag will also need o be serviced and readied for he busy winer season ahead. Broadview Snow Busers BY SHIRLEY LARTER Our club received he rail fund payou cheque and was pleasanly surprised o see ha all our hard work las winer paid off. The monies received will go owards a number of hings, wih a sea-can for sorage as par of he plan. I would come in very handy for soring signs, sleighs and oher club iems. The quesion on everyone s mind is when will he firs snowfall come? Las year was he firs ime in years ha he snow came early and sayed and provided us wih a grea, long sledding season. There are some grea rails in he Souheas ha connec all hese grea clubs and everyone should come for a ride. Las season our club voluneers groomed a oal of 3,460 kilomeres of snowmobile rails in he Moose Mounain area, aking hem 360 hours. This was he busies year ha anyone can remember. We groomed righ up o almos he end of April. The club would definiely like o see some new voluneers o help us grow he club and make he rails even beer. We need people o mark rails and mainain hem on a weekly basis especially in he Soughon area. I was also impressed wih he enhusiasm of he SSA saff during he inerview process, and was no disappoined. I did no ake long o recognize he dedicaion and commimen of he SSA saff, board and voluneer club members! Growing up in rural like o join us as he more he merrier and a wiener roas would be an excellen way o make he day. Club meeings will soon be saring and we hope as always o exceed he previous year s club membership. Waskesiu snowmobile weekend BY DEBBIE GIESINGER norhern Saskachewan, snowmobiling was a par of winer life. Afer geing married and moving o Regina Beach we purchased our firs wo snowmobiles. I snowmobiled wih our family unil our hird child was born. The wo older children hen wen wih dad and heir friends and grew up enjoying he snow and hills around he beach. So, here I am working for he provincial snowmobile associaion and have no been on a snowmobile for 17 years. I have never ridden on a provincial snowmobile rail and I did no even know ha Regina Beach s own Jeannie Brewer was one of he founders of PWOS! Needless o say, I have a lo o learn abou he business of snowmobiling. Chris said i was no mandaory o be a snowmobiler for my posiion in he office bu fel i would be beneficial o a leas experience riding some of he rails. One Friday a he beginning of March Chris challenged me if I could find snowmobiles and ransporaion o Waskesiu he Debbie Giesinger waiing in he parking lo a Elk Ridge Lodge before heading ou on he rails. Seeing ha we do no have snowmobiles, we drive a car and here was no much ime o plan, I was no sure he acually mean i, bu I was up for he challenge. I spoke o a friend who is an avid snowmobiler and he was very ineresed in a weekend exploring he Lakeland rails. Monday morning I old Chris ha a plan was in moion and four of us were going sledding on Friday. I have no been o Waskesiu for many years and had never been o he Elk Ridge Resor we were impressed! The rooms, meals and he locaion were more han we expeced and he weaher even co-operaed. We spen he day on he rails beween Waskesiu and Chrisopher Lake, sopped a a couple of warm-up shelers and had lunch a Sunse Bay Resor, which is righ on he shore of Emma Lake. The hing ha was mos ousanding o me abou riding on he snowmobile rails was ha you can go o an unfamiliar area, spend he day riding rails and never feel insecure abou being los. I also did no ake long o appreciae he rail signing Sop signs are here for a reason (as we were surprised by a semi ruck driving down a very narrow logging road hank goodness for he Sop sign), and he rails are for woway raffic, so keep o your righ.
