The parade began on one end of own and led sraigh o he Rodeo Fairgrounds. Admission was eigh dollars and he sands were filled by 10 a.m. when evens began. A he Grand Enry, hey Weaher Forecas explained he Maverick Club, which pus on he rodeo every year, and is hisory. The Maverick Club was formed in 1922 by ciizens of he Village of Cimarron. The purpose was o pursue social, civic, and educaional aciviies, while avoiding poliical and religious viewpoins. This full moon experience made me pause and hink abou one of he special hings I have enjoyed a Philmon he nigh skies. Wheher i is he moon in one of is phases raveling across he sky, or he full moon illuminaing he Ranch o allow a person he abiliy o safely ravel a nigh, or an incredible display of sars so close you feel like ouching hem, each is a special momen. I know by now ha all of you have some special Philmon nigh sky memories. My daugher and I have always enjoyed looking each fall for he winer consellaion, Orion. Once we had a rare opporuniy o view he Norhern Lighs, deep magena bans in he Norh. Conservaion was making a new rail, and hey found on area hey hough would be good for a camp. I was made in 2010 and has six campsies. We were doing a rail survey up in ha area, and we saw his really swee fla meadow up on his ridge, and i jus jumped ou a us as a cool place o camp, Conservaion Direcor Mike Serio said. The camp go is name because Serio and a group of conservaion saff go los here when hey were designing he rail. I is a dry camp, which was a challenge. Conservaion recenly finished moving he fence furher away from he highway o make room for he pah. The fence has 30 fee of space beween i and he road, wih 10 fee being prairie, hen he 10 foo-wide pah, and hen anoher 10 fee of prairie before Highway 21. The pah will be buil ino he naure rail a PTC, crossing he sree and hen coninue along Highway 21 unil i reaches he Polo Barns. I will cross highway 21 here and coninue all he way o abou he Apache Springs Campground. Philmon has permission o pain he crosswalk on he highway. The pah will be similar o he pah from CHQ o PTC, a dir pah ha is lined wih rocks on eiher side. Some pars of he rail are going o be he naural prairie already here. Maerials will be coming from Philmon o make he rail. Conservaion Direcor Mike Serio is going o have o build bridges on i for crossing creeks, which hey hope o complee his fall. The Conservaion eam plans on having he rail done by he beginning of nex year. You ge o look a he Tooh of Time and he glorious views of he Eas, bu you ll also have several spos where he Sana Fe Trail is visible and we will place some markers so people can see ha as hey are hiking along, Anderson said. Cimarron plans on building a rail from ha poin all he way ino own so i will connec wih he nework of pahs ha are in own. When he rail is done, Philmon plans on adding hisorical markers and signs for walkers o sop and read abou he hisory of he rail. More money for college expenses have been awarded each year, and more saff have submied applicaions for hese funds. Boh rends coninued las summer. The Philmon Saff Associaion is working hard o make 2012 an even bigger year for he Seasonal Saff Scholarship program. There will be more funds available o use for school expenses. However, you need o apply. Forms are available around he Ranch, including he Silver Sage Saff Aciviy Cener and he PSA office. Scholarship awards of $500 for firs year saff, $1,000 for second year saff, and $1,500 for hird year saff will be made for he Fall 2012 Spring 2013 academic year. They were all eagerly awaiing he arrival of one man. Finally, afer 29 hours and 20 minues of running, Chris Whie emerged from he woods and a 10:20 a.m. he became he firs person in New Mexico sae hisory o finish a 100-mile rail race. My goal was o jus finish and anyhing else would jus be he icing on op, said Whie, beer known as Toph. This was he firs ime Toph, an avid runner, aemped a 100 mile run. In May of his year he compeed in he Jemez 50 in Los Alamos, New Mexico and ran he 50 mile race. I wasn long afer ha he learned of he 100-mile rail race in Angel Fire. I figured I d ry i, said Toph. I s he nex sep afer running 50 miles. The Oklahoma Trail Runners Associaion designed he rail run hrough Angel Fire o showcase he area as a place where runners from nearby Oklahoma and Texas can rain in high aliudes. In addiion o he 100-mile race, here was also a 50-mile race and a 50-kilomeer race. Of he 20 runners who began he 100-mile race on Saurday June 30, only hree me he qualifying ime of 14 hours a he 50-mile mark. Of hose hree, only Toph chose o coninue he race. Once he sun se, Toph was alone on he rail. The race officials racked him wih a GPS o make sure he was moving along he roue. There was also a search and rescue eam on call in case of emergency. Toph ran hrough he nigh and finished he las 50 miles of he race alone. Waching he whole experience was inspiraional, said Seve Nelson, Philmon Comproller. Seve and his wife Diane Nelson served as Toph s pi crew hroughou he enire race. While Diane currenly works wih Toph as he Healh Lodge Secreary a Philmon, he couple has known Toph for years boh from working a Philmon and raining wih heir son in endurance runs. The wo also compeed ogeher in he US Ski Mounaineering Championships. As par of his preparaion for he Angel Fire race, Toph asked boh Seve and Diane o help care for him. We focused on jus him, said Diane. We made sure he was eaing and drinking enough. We also made sure he was menally well because exreme disance runners can become delirious afer a while. The Nelsons me Toph a every available checkpoin o give him soup, waer and gel packs. Afer checking his physical and menal sae hey made sure he kep going. The encouragemen hey provided was he mos vial. I wouldn have finished, le alone placed, if i weren for hem, said Toph, smiling. Toph averaged 15 minues per mile bu he ran he las hree miles in 30 minues. The crowd ha gahered in he early hours ha Monday morning was a mixure of paricipans and specaors. Seve said he could ell ha everyone was impressed wih Toph s accomplishmen. Toph is no one o dwell on his achievemen, however. His humble personaliy prevens him from doing so. To him, he race was jus anoher personal challenge. He was no prepared for he amoun of aenion he has since received. He did somehing exraordinary, said Diane, wih pride. He jus doesn realize i ye.
