If he Farmer s Almanac is correc, his upcoming season will be grea for snowmobiling as he almanac is forecasing a cool winer wih abovenormal snowfall for he province. Afer las year s grea season, clubs are anxious o ge he season underway and many clubs are saring o have heir fall meeings. Make sure you conac your local club if you are ineresed in aending heir meeings. During his pas summer and moving ino he fall, Snoman has been busy geing ready for he new season. The rail numbering program ha was sared las season will be compleed his season wih rail numbers being locaed on he new provincial rail maps and on he club rail sysems on he Snoman websie. The provincial rail map has undergone a major revamp i will be less cluered and rails will be beer defined and will show warm-up shelers. Every effor is being made o ensure he new map is available by mid-november. The rail signing online course is jus abou ready o be launched and will be available by he firs week of November. The course will grealy enhance member abiliy o gain he required knowledge o ensure rails are signed correcly and furher improve he qualiy of rail signage in he province. Snoman is abou o ener ino an agreemen wih Fresh Air Educaors o deliver an online snowmobile safey course. This online course will be available o all residens of Manioba and is inended o arge new snowmobilers. The course will cover all faces of he safe operaion Snoman execuive welcomes a new club, he Se. 2 An epic riding season BUT LONGER WINTERS MEAN MORE WORK FOR VOLUNTEERS BY KEN LUCKO, Execuive Direcor We ended he riding season wih he mos kilomeres ever groomed in Snoman s hisory: 158,176. So wha does his mean o he riders and o he clubs? The four-monh riding season was fanasic, enabling everyone he opporuniy o ge ou riding warm emperaures wih los of snow equals a grea season! As for he clubs, he riding was grea bu here was also wo sides o his grea season. Clubs are paid for he amoun of kilomeres ha hey groom; however, here is only so much money o be divided up by hese clubs a he end of he season, so he more hey groom, he less ha hey acually receive per kilomere of paymen. Today s ever-increasing capial and mainenance coss can make economic susainabiliy for he clubs very difficul. We mus also remember ha a long season is quie rying on our dedicaed voluneers. Insead of riding hey are clearing, grooming, signing and generally working all hours of he day and nigh. So, le s give hem a huge hank you for heir dedicaion, perseverance and communiy spiri. If i was no for hem here would be no designaed rail sysem in Manioba. I always find i humorous when people say ha here mus no be much o do in he office his ime of year wih rail reconciliaion, adverising, raffle draws, insurance renewals and club The Margare Gadd sory BY LINDA BUTLER This snowmobile sory sared in he lae 60s, when a couple bough heir firs snowmobile and wihin a day purchased heir second sled. This couple were insrumenal in he inroducion of snowmobiling o he communiy and area of Foxwarren. I is no surprising, even oday, when a group goes snowmobiling wih Margare ha she is well known in many areas of Manioba as well as Saskachewan. Margare and her husband, Merv, sared wih a Sno Plane unil hey purchased heir firs snowmobiles, and hus began heir own version of snowmobile rails his was well before mos people even hough abou geing involved in such an aciviy. The Foxwarren hisory book, The Fox s Tale, of 1989 describes Margare and her husband as enjoying having young people and heir friends visi he farm o Ski-Doo in he winer and o bike during he summer monhs. They have an payous, here is always somehing o work on. We are excied o ell you wha will be new for he 2013/2014 season. Firs he maps: he Snoman board has implemened a rail numbering sysem ha liss eas/wes rails as wo-digi odd numbers (purple on he map), norh/souh will be wo-digi even numbers (orange on he map), and club rails are hree digis (green on he map). These changes, along wih signage, will enable riders o know where hey are on he rail sysem. Also, on he club websie rail maps, if you click on he Sheler icon, he co-ordinaes for ha sheler will appear. In order o be proacive wih regard o educaion and safey, he Snoman board will be providing an online snowmobile safey course his winer. We are working wih he company Fresh Air Educaors, which has a grea deal of experience in developing online raining courses. The course will have a nominal fee and will be on a volunary basis only. So, wheher you are a new rider or an experienced rider, i is always pruden o learn abou safe operaion of a snowmobile. Our member clubs will be selling raffle ickes for a new 2014 snowmobile again his year. For ickes, you can conac one of our clubs or he Snoman office for deails. In 1970 during a visi o he local Esso service saion in Foxwarren, he owners had received a shipmen of Moo Ski snowmobiles and hey loaded a 1970 Moo Ski Cade, 250-cc, single cylinder ino he back of he Gadds ruck o ry ou. Afer a couple of days, Merv and Margare reurned o he Esso service saion o purchase a second machine. This was he sar of he purchase of many snowmobiles over he years by he family. Snowmobiling became a very social way of life. During he years before groomed rails, hey would ge a group ogeher and ake off across counry for shor runs and hen go ou for supper a one of he area resaurans. On New Year s Day Margare wen snowmobiling wih hree generaions of he Buler family, and by he end of he day Margare had pu anoher 109 miles on he Ca. No bad for 89 years young. Wha is your excuse? Margare has ridden all he Snowraxx and Thunder and Ice groomed rails over he pas few years. A he sar of he grooming season Margare also wen on he club s BR400 for her firs groomer ride. In mid-january of 2013 Margare had an unforunae fall which laid her up for he balance of he season. Margare said she should have gone ou snowmobiling insead of going o a concer i would have been safer and she would no be siing in hospial. Some hings never change. Margare is looking forward o nex season bu she has decided no o replace her Ca. Like he Brandon Sun aricle from 2005 indicaed, his would make a grea commercial for remaining acive and involved. We all look forward o riding wih Margare in he 2013/2014 snowmobile season. As a resul of he meeing wih Recycle Everywhere and informaion obained, he Snowraxx Snowmobile Club decided o paricipae in his program and ordered enough conainers o service all our shelers, inside and ouside, as well as conainers for all our kiosks locaed along our rails. The club is very pleased o repor he Recycle Everywhere program was very well received by snowmobilers and we found ha we had a significan reducion in beverage conainers lef along our rails as well as on he ground a our shelers and major sopping locaions. This no only saves our club from doing many hours of cleanup during he season bu more imporanly was also appreciaed by our many landowners. We also wish o hank all he snowmobilers for providing us wih heir suppor by using he conainers on he rails and a he shelers. She joined he office in mid- April of his year as Snofund adminisraor. As a child Shirley lived in Winnipeg. Once a year, he local communiy club held a winer fair. They would se up a circular rack and give he children snowmobile rides. For many of he children aending his was heir only opporuniy o snowmobile and was a much-anicipaed even. Shirley moved o he Anola area wih her family as a eenager. I wasn ill hen ha she was able o experience he rue joy of riding he rails wih friends and family. Some of her fondes memories of snowmobiling are of riding wih he young people s group in he area and siing back aferwards o enjoy ho chocolae and snacks. Shirley now lives in he Anola area wih her own family, her husband, Jeff, and her wo wonderful daughers. She enjoys camping wih her family, cycling, Zumba and reading. 4 >> CLUB NEWS Se. Amelie Ridge Riders BY COLINE VERHAEGHE The Se. Amelie Ridge Riders snowmobile club was formed in We sared wih a widerack workhorse snowmobile pulling a ruck ire o make our rails. Tha year, we se up our warm-up cabin on propery owned by he Turle River Waershed Conservaion Disric. This parcel of land had been purchased by he Turle River conservaion group o be lef in is naural sae and o be used for recreaional purposes, which also suied our plans. The club laer purchased a drag from he Neepawa Snowmobile Club and hen a Bombardier J5 o pull down our rails. A second J5 was laer purchased and a homemade drag was consruced o mee he needs of our expanding rails. In 2011, our club purchased a Tucker Sno-Ca There is nohing like having a passion for sledding o keep you focused while undergoing your cancer reamens. For mos ha know me, I am a prey deermined woman and afer voluneering and raising money for breas cancer research since he Polaris WOW Relay in 2006 followed by all of he Pink Ladies Rides for a Cure, I was diagnosed wih Sage 3 breas cancer and lymph node cancer. Wha are he chances of being diagnosed wih he very cancer ha you have been doing voluneer work for during he pas seven years? For mos, i s an unbelievable ale, bu oh no, no for me. I can sill remember siing a he round able a he Pink Ladies Ride for a Cure in Porage la Prairie lisening o ohers alk abou heir journey, only o find ou laer ha very monh ha I oo had breas and lymph node cancer. The Se. Amelie Tucker Sno-Ca does a good job of grooming he rails. from Roblin Snowmobile Club and he J5 was sold. We redesigned our drag o a nine-foo cu and equipped i wih a brush knife, which does a very good job of our rails. Our rails now connec Se. Rose du Lac, he Narrows Trail, Se. Amelie, McCreary and Laurier. As of 2013, we have 32 family memberships, which equal 64 members plus heir children, and 10 single members. Mos of our members are very acive in he club wheher i is for fundraising, rail developmen, mainenance, wood cuing or cabin upkeep. We are always looking for new members from surrounding areas, so we are able o expand our rails o connec o oher communiies in he fuure. A cancer survivor makes racks BY CINDY McRAE So my journey began on he road of docors, ess, specialiss, more ess and hen when reamen would sar afer ha. I was awake in my very own nighmare all day and all nigh. Firs came my surgery in June 2012, followed by six chemo reamens ha sared in July 2012 unil November Nex was 25 reamens of radiaion from December 2012 o January 2013 slap dab in he nex riding season. While I wasn hrilled abou he iming, I needed o keep focused. Wha beer way han o do wha you love sledding and searching he Inerne for my dream machine. I didn' ake oo long when you are as deermined as me and I found wo one in Albera and one in Thompson. As presiden of our club and a former daycare person, free always caches my aenion. Alhough mos shelers I have visied in our neck of he woods have long had some form of recycling conainer, i s nice o have one ha is easily idenified by almos everyone as a recycling conainer. The brigh blue colour wih Recycle Everywhere leering is hard o miss. Due o he populariy of he Recycle Everywhere program, he conainers we ordered were no immediaely available. Many clubs and organizaions seemed o see he value in his program and all liked he same conainer. We did receive a emporary replacemen ha we used during las season. This summer our new conainers arrived and I am looking forward o placing our new conainers ino our wo warm-up shelers. I didn even ake i for a quick spin as I was so ired and sicker han a dog, bu i was exacly he sled I waned. I sa in my yard for anoher week or so as I was so ired I could barely walk from my bed o my fron yard where my new shiny orange Assaul awaied me. They led us on a merry rip norh owards Ochre River, Dauphin and Gilber Plains, and reurning o La Grange. A fine snowmobiling weekend BY LYNN BLAKE AND THE TOY SHOPPE GANG The La Grange Laurier welcomes snowmobilers o is unique esablishmen. Sledding enhusiass in Manioba enjoy he rural hospialiy in he Laurier area. Jordan, cousin Rick and son David. While here, we enjoyed he hospialiy provided by Lucien Boisver, proprieor of La Grange Laurier, locaed on he eas escarpmen of Riding Mounain Naional Park in he own of Laurier. Lucien offers various experiences his esablishmen (which is a work in progress) is par museum, par bed and breakfas and par bouique fine dining. The srucure feaures four wood soves, ousanding homemade food and fluffy whie owels. La Grange Laurier has been hosing groups for hree seasons now.
