Camp right on the airport for $8.00 per night, first come, first served. Or, if you prefer you may stay in the dorms at Columbia College. Another alternative is to reserve your room in beautiful and historic downtown Columbia. See inside for a list of hotels and Bed and Breakfasts. Meet Cherilynn Morrow, Educator, Astrophysicist and Private Pilot Cherilynn Morrow, our keynote speaker Saturday evening, combines her love of aviation, science and education into an innovative and inspirational blend that fits perfectly with The Ninety-Nines mission to provide aviation education in the community. Cherilynn is a scientist who specializes in training people to provide informal education and public outreach in aerospace. Touring, Exploring, Gambling & More Ready for adventure? 2 C ONFERENCE L OGISTICS Lodging Information Not only is this Spring Section Meeting shaping up to be a dream of a meeting with a goldmine of offerings, it also has a lodging opportunity for everyone! Camp right at the airport for $8.00 per night, first come, first served. Stay at one of the hotels or B & B s in town. Or, stay in the dormitories at Columbia College. Be sure to make your arrangements early as this weekend is usually very popular in Columbia. Columbia College offers 2 bedroom apartments designed to accommodate four guests with two guests sharing a room. Every apartment unit is equipped with its own bathroom, kitchenette (w/full size refrigerator and two burner stove), and living area. The rates are $15.00 per bed (shared room) per night plus 8% tax or $30.00 for two beds (single) per night plus 8% tax. They will provide sheets, blankets, pillows, and toilet paper. Guests need to provide towels and toiletries. There will be one van trip from the Sacramento International Airport at 2:00 P.M. on Friday to the Columbia Airport and one on Sunday morning returning to Sacramento Airport. If you will be renting a car in Sacramento, please let us know on your registration form. If you anticipate having extra room in your vehicle and would be willing to provide transportation, should it be needed, please note that on your registration form also. Airport Information Columbia Airport (O22) Field Elevation: 2118 feet MSL Pattern Altitude: 3118 feet AWOS Unicom/CTAF Oakland Center Rancho Murieta Runway 17/35 asphalt Right traffic rwy 17 Runway 11/29 turf Right traffic rwy 11 PCL Expect varying wind direction and speed midfield due to terrain. No landings or takeoffs on runway 11 due to cross runway conflicts. Be alert for occasional ultralight and non-radio aircraft using runway 29 at or below 2600 feet MSL. When taxiing, identify yourself as a Ninety-Nine and you will be directed to the appropriate tie-down area. Tiedown fees will be complimented. For a link to complete airport information, go to Additional details of Conference logistics as well as other information will be available on our website: Conference Transportation Bus transportation will be provided between the Columbia College dormitories, hotels, motels and the airport. Service will begin at noon on Friday, May 9 and run approximately every half hour. They will run for a limited time only after the evenings activities have finished. There will be no service during Saturday s business meeting.

3 C ONFERENCE K EYNOTE S PEAKER Our keynote speaker Cherilynn Morrow says, When I was 5 years old I read a children's book called Ann Can Fly. I enjoyed a special identification with the little girl in the book because my middle name is Ann, and my father told me I was so named after Ann Morrow Lindbergh a great adventuress and personal heroine of mine. Cheri went on to obtain her private pilot license with instrument rating and also a glider rating. All this while becoming a solar physicist and educator. See for more about Cheri's personal and professional history. S EMINARS The Wonderful World of Floatplanes Terry Campbell, owner and operator of Norcal Aviation, Inc. will offer a seaplane safety seminar on Flying into the Upper Sierra Lakes. The seminar/slide show will be on mountain floatplane flying and using the higher lakes. Discussion will cover the best approaches into some of the more difficult confined lakes, emergency gear needed and much more. Terry is a designated pilot examiner, CFII and enjoys teaching in her Super Cub on straight floats. She will offer ASES lessons the following day. Suitcase Seminar Create Your Own Tools Come and join Celia Vanderpool in a hilarious event! We will be making classroom demonstration aids and help the Southwest Section NASA Centennial of Flight Ambassadors put together a travel kit for your field expeditions into those scary classrooms. Who knows? We may even design something new or produce a squadron of UFO s at this gathering. Chapter Webmaster Ground School Kelli Gant, SWS Webmaster, says, If you can fly, you can create a Web page for your chapter. This seminar provides the technical basics that you need to use the new Southwest Section Hosting Service and build a Web site for your chapter. Topics include an overview of the Internet and how Web pages display on your computer, details on the Section's new service, a demonstration of an easy-to-use Web page creation tool, and reference handouts. T OURS AND A CTIVITIES FRIDAY: Guided Walking Tour of Columbia 1:00 3:00 Enjoy a guided walking tour of Columbia State Historic Park, one of the few old Gold Rush towns that has retained much the same appearance as when miners thronged its streets. Black Oak Casino 1:00 5:00 Here s a chance to try your luck at the Black Oak Casino in Tuolumne, California. It is open 24 hours - 7 days. SATURDAY: Hidden Treasure Gold Mine 1:00 3:00 & 3:00 5:00 The Hidden Treasure is the only active working gold mine open to the public. Discovered in 1879, it still produces pockets of gold today. Visitors can actually see the quartz vein that gold formed in millions of years ago. An expert guide will accompany you through 800 feet of tunnel. Discover what "stopes," "side drifts," and "glory holes" are all about. SUNDAY: Floatplane Lesson 9:00 5:00 Join Terry Campbell for an introductory floatplane lesson on Melones Reservoir. This introductory lesson will cover how to handle a floatplane, water safety, step taxiing, takeoff & landings, beaching & docking. Lunch will be provided. Sign up now as space is limited. However, everybody is welcome to join us on the ground for introductory information and camaraderie. If you are interested in sharing the picnic lunch, donations will be requested.
