First Sunday of Lent Gn 9:8-15; Ps 25; 1 Pt 3:18-22; Mk 1:12-15 Today we are celebrating the first Sunday of this liturgical season that encourages Christians to set out on a path of preparation for Easter. Today, the Gospel reminds us that Jesus, after being baptized in the River Jordan and impelled by the Holy Spirit who settled upon him and revealed him as the Christ, withdrew for 40 days into the Desert of Judea where he overcame the temptations of Satan (cf. Mk 1: 12-13). Following their Teacher and Lord, Christians also enter the Lenten desert in spirit in order to face with him the "fight against the spirit of evil". The image of the desert is a very eloquent metaphor of the human condition. The Book of Exodus recounts the experience of the People of Israel who, after leaving Egypt, wandered through the desert of Sinai for 40 years before they reached the Promised Land. During that long journey, the Jews experienced the full force and persistence of the tempter, who urged them to lose trust in the Lord and to turn back; but at the same time, thanks to Moses' mediation, they learned to listen to God's voice calling them to become his holy People. In meditating on this biblical passage, we understand that to live life to the full in freedom we must overcome the test that this freedom entails, that is, temptation. Only if he is freed from the slavery of falsehood and sin can the human person, through the obedience of faith that opens him to the truth, find the full meaning of his life and attain peace, love and joy. For this very reason Lent is a favorable time for a diligent revision of life through recollection, prayer and penance. 5 22 de febrero de 2015 Primer Domingo de Cuaresma Primer Domingo de Cuaresma Gn 9:8-15; Sal 25; 1 Pe 3:18-22; Mc 1:12-15 Hoy el evangelio nos recuerda que Jesús, después de haber sido bautizado en el río Jordán, impulsado por el Espíritu Santo, que se había posado sobre él revelándolo como el Cristo, se retiró durante cuarenta días al desierto de Judá, donde superó las tentaciones de Satanás (cf. Mc 1, 12-13). Siguiendo a su Maestro y Señor, también los cristianos entran espiritualmente en el desierto cuaresmal para afrontar junto con él el combate contra el espíritu del mal. La imagen del desierto es una metáfora muy elocuente de la condición humana. El libro del Éxodo narra la experiencia del pueblo de Israel que, habiendo salido de Egipto, peregrinó por el desierto del Sinaí durante cuarenta años antes de llegar a la tierra prometida. A lo largo de aquel largo viaje, los judíos experimentaron toda la fuerza y la insistencia del tentador, que los inducía a perder la confianza en el Señor y a volver atrás; pero, al mismo tiempo, gracias a la mediación de Moisés, aprendieron a escuchar la voz de Dios, que los invitaba a convertirse en su pueblo santo. Al meditar en esta página bíblica, comprendemos que, para realizar plenamente la vida en la libertad, es preciso superar la prueba que la misma libertad implica, es decir, la tentación. Sólo liberada de la esclavitud de la mentira y del pecado, la persona humana, gracias a la obediencia de la fe, que la abre a la verdad, encuentra el sentido pleno de su existencia y alcanza la paz, el amor y la alegría. Precisamente por eso, la Cuaresma constituye un tiempo favorable para una atenta revisión de vida en el recogimiento, la oración y la penitencia.
