Today s gospel is no different. Jesus, a carpenter, tells a professional fisherman how to fish.

So, the carpenter says: Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.

Peter sees Jesus as someone who is amazing and who amazes. Peter also becomes aware that in relationship to this man Jesus that he (Peter) is unworthy a sinner.

Jesus accepted Peter as he was and as Peter would reveal himself to be again and again.

2 Page Two Saint Bernard Church February 10, th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Today s story is about a miraculous catch of fish; but in reality, it is so much more. Jesus encounters with people were always about drawing more faith out of them. These moments were always about helping them see differently and to know with their hearts. Today s gospel is no different. Jesus, a carpenter, tells a professional fisherman how to fish. After a full night of wasted toil, the fishermen were cleaning their nets -- a tiresome task; especially in light of having been so ineffective in their all-night efforts. So, the carpenter says: Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch. When Peter and his companions catch too many fish for even 2 boats that their boats are ready to sink, Peter becomes profoundly aware of Jesus knowledge and insight. Peter sees Jesus as someone who is amazing and who amazes. Peter also becomes aware that in relationship to this man Jesus that he (Peter) is unworthy a sinner. He utters striking words: Depart from me, O Lord, for I am a sinful man. The great miracle was not about fish but about love. Jesus accepted Peter as he was and as Peter would reveal himself to be again and again. Peter, who would deny even knowing Jesus in his moment of need, was the one Jesus would select to lead this ragged band of apostles. He even elevated his fishing skills to become a fisherman of men/women/people/souls. Peter would become a sharer in Jesus divine ministry of faith, hope and love. God clearly shows a preference for the poor in His Sacred Word. It is the tradition of many Christians to tithe 10% to the poor. All of the parishes of Los Angeles (including those who receive assistance from Together in Mission) are asked to raise 10% of their last year s ordinary income. The hope is that EVERYONE will make a pledge to pay off all at once or over five months. How much one gives is less important than that everyone gives something. As Catholics Our Story is HOPE. I entered my first pastorate after 11 years of ordination. The parish was poor and received help from Together in Mission for both the parish church, and the parish school. Without that help we could never have survived. Deeply indebted and deeply grateful, I have always participated joyfully in giving my own personal pledge to Together in Mission. I hope you will join me with joy and gratitude in this year s campaign! TOGETHER IN MISSION 2019 TODAY we will launch the Together in Mission 2019 Annual Appeal. During all Masses, we will conduct the in-pew process for the collection of gifts & pledges to this year s appeal. 3 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Bernard Church February 10, º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario ~ La historia de hoy habla de una pesca milagrosa, pero en realidad, es mucho más que eso. Los encuentros de Jesús con la gente siempre fueron para acrecentar más su fe. Fueron siempre para ayudarles a ver las cosas de diferente manera y para conocer con el corazón. El evangelio de hoy no es diferente. Jesús, un carpintero, le enseña a un pescador profesional como debe pescar. Después de una noche de duro trabajo sin resultados, los pescadores limpiaban sus redes una tarea muy pesada, especialmente por todos sus esfuerzos en vano de toda la noche. El carpintero dice: "Lleven la barca mar adentro y echen sus redes para pescar. Pedro y sus compañeros pescan una gran cantidad de pescados, incluso llenan dos barcas, que casi se hunden, Pedro se concientiza del conocimiento y la percepción de Jesús. Pedro ve a Jesús como alguien increíble y asombroso. También se da cuenta de que en relación a este hombre, Jesús, él, (Pedro) es indigno un picador y pronuncia palabras sorprendentes: Apártate de mí, Señor, que soy un pecador." El gran milagro no se trataba de peces, sino de amor. Jesús aceptó a Pedro tal como era y como él se revelaría a sí mismo una y otra vez. Pedro, que incluso negaría conocer a Jesús en sus momentos de necesidad, fue al que Jesús elegiría para dirigir esta banda harapienta de apóstoles. Incluso elevó sus habilidades de pescador para convertirlo en un pescador de hombres, mujeres, personas, almas. Pedro se convirtió en partícipe en el ministerio divino de Jesús de fe, esperanza y amor. En el pecado, Pedro encontró la gracia! Dios muestra claramente su preferencia por los pobres en su Sagrada Palabra. Es tradición de muchos Cristianos el diezmar el 10% a los pobres. A todas las parroquias de Los Ángeles (incluidas las que reciben asistencia de Unidos en Misión) se nos pide recaudar el 10% del ingreso ordinario del año anterior. Fuí párroco por vez primera después de 11 años de mi ordenación. La parroquia era pobre y recibía ayuda de Unidos en Misión, tanto la Iglesia como la Escuela Parroquial. Sin esa ayuda, no hubiésemos podido sobrevivir. Profundamente en deuda y muy agradecido siempre participé con alegría en mi compromiso personal en Unidos en Misión. Espero que me acompañen con alegría y gratitud en la campaña de este año! CAMPAÑA UNIDOS EN MISIÓN 2019 HOY lanzamos la Campaña Anual Unidos en Misión 2019 Durante todas las Misas escucharemos sobre la importancia de compartir nuestros dones con los demás. Llevaremos a cabo el proceso de colecta de compromisos durante todas las Misas para la apelación de este año. Estamos todos juntos en esta misión. Esta es una excelente oportunidad para demostrar nuestro amor. La meta parroquial este año es de $34,200.
