3 EVENTS AND TOURS July 22 PICNIC Our tour to EI Monte Park was enjoyed by all who attended. We had 14 Packards, 7 Studebakers and 1 Dodge (wpc club) plus several other brands. August 26 GARAGE Tour, starts in Mission Valley at M. Wards parking lot, see details in this issue. September 10 SUNROAD MARINA, joint tour and pot-luck with Cadillac-LaSalle Club. Possible Yacht Tour. September 22, 23, 24 ALL-CAL TOUR, San Diego Region Hosts. Invitations are mailed; send in your reservations now. October 28, Saturday Murder Mystery Costume Party, at the home of... November 18 HARVEST TOUR, fruits and nuts for all to enjoy. December 2 Christmas Party, Tony and B. J. will host this one. SCHEDULE OF MEETINGS Monthly meeting, first Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm. We meet at the S.D. Automotive Museum in Balboa Park. The meeting room is open and is now our regular meeting place. DOCENT program needs people on Sat and Sun for Museum visitors. Meet every Sat & Sun before opening. Car Club Council Secretary has resigned, we need a new volunteer for the position. 7 TECHNICAL.'.., OIL PUMP CAMSHAFT GEAR All Sixes and Eights 18th, 19th, 20th Serit:s Supt:r H's The oil pump camshaft gear is pressed on the upper end of the oil pump shaft. After it is in position the shaft is drilled through the pin hole in the gear, and the pin inserted. There have been cases where the pump has locked, due to the presence of ice or of dirt particles, and the pin has sheared. The failure is usually caused by ice and, therefore, it is usually a cold weather condition. When it occurs, the oil pump should be examined. Make sure it is clean and see that the gears have enough end play so that they are not pinched by the pump cover. Of course, you will not find ice, but you may find water or a rusted condition which shows that water has been present. You must use whatever nt:w parts are necessary to secure a good press fit. You will remember that in the early Sixes and One Twenties, the flat drive spring in the upper end of the driving gear which engages the distributor shaft was a thin spring about -:/./' thick. In the 16th Series, we increased the thickness to /6/1. In the future, we will use the thick spring in all gears, whether they are shipped separately or are included in oil pump assemblies. When installing a new pump or gear in an early engine, you should, therefore, check the thickness of the spring and the width of the slot in the distributor shaft. If you find it necessary to widen the slot, two hack saw blades, side by side, will give you the proper width. In making tht: repair, it is not enough simply to replace the pin. The pump drive dt:pends largely on the press fit of the gear. If the gear has turned on the shaft so that the gear and shaft are worn and loose, the new pin will not be able to carry the load. The trouble will be repeated, and the pin will shear even though the pump is in perfect condition. Upper Support Arm Inner Bracket - Offset 24th-25th Series The upper support arm inner bracket Part Number is designed with :1" offset attaching holes. In production, the brackets are installed, with the offset holes toward the wheel. There is also an _ identifying "pimple" on the bracket near the center which is toward the wheel. In other words. the brackets are installed co give the least amount oi camber. If more camber is desired than can be obtained with the adjustment provided, the bracket can be turned over, thus increasing the camber approximatel~- 1 -' 0.. Z
