1 PACKARDS INTERNATIONAL MOTOR CAR CLUB SAN DIEGO REGION --.. VOLUME SIX JANUARY 1980 NUMBER 1 Randy Light is the proud owner of this audographed photo of the cast of 'THE LAST CONVERTIBLE'. The inscription is self-explanatory.
2 OFFICERS PRESIDENTIAL PODIUM Al Shearer AI Shearer.. President Mark Rothermich.. Vice President Randy Light.. Secretary and Membership Chairman Joe Shaw Treasurer Jim Price.. Activities Chairman Mark Rothermich.. Technical Committee James Dahmann.. Publications Chairman John Sands.. Projects Chairman CALENDAR OF EVENTS January 2 General Meeting 7:00 pm January 20 Installation of Officers Brunch; Officer's Club, North Island NAS, see story. The media are extolling the fact that "we are entering a new and hopefully 'glorious' decade", which of course brings most of us to the phrase, "I certainly hope so!" For most of us who have been reasonably active in cleaning, polishing, repairing, touring and showing Packards, the decade of the 70's wasn't all that bad - so its going to be a tough act to follow - but I think we can and will! Obviously, the All-Cal Tour in September set a new standard for touring excellence and Mark Rothermich and his "Committee of Many" deserve all the plaudits. Special thanks go to John and Carol Sands for the repeated use of their home, hospitality, and warmth, in hosting a variety of special meetings and social gatherings. For those of you who missed, (again), the great Christmas Party at the Mark Greenes' - you missed a lot - Packard goodies included! Thanks again to Mark and Kathy. As for myself, having served for more years than I like to think about for that 'other club', I'm now enjoying the pleasure of beginning to do it all over again with new people, and new places, and new Packards. What more can one ask for? Happy New Year and Happy Packarding! February 2, 3 Annual Membership meet in Anaheim. Looking better than ever. Make plans now to be there. February 6 General Meeting 7: 00 pm North Park Recreation Center Shuffleboard Clubhouse. February Swap Meet at EI Cajon = See Tour 2 March 5 General Meeting, usual place and time. 3 JAN,UARY TOUR Our annual Brunch and Officer's Installation will be held at the North Island NAS Officer's Club courtesy of our new president, Al Shearer. We will meet at our usual place, Robinson's, at the east end of Fashion Valley, on Friars Road, just off Route 163. We must meet between 10:00 am and 10:15 am, so that we can leave promptly at 10:30 am for North Island NAS. We will caravan, for we need to be together to enter the facility. Have your $1.20 ready for the toll taker at Coronado Bridge. Those of you in the southbay area who don't wish to come all the way up to Fashion 'Valley may want to drive to Coronado and wait on the main street leading to the NAS entrance. Arrival there should be about 10:45 am. At the Officer's Club, the brunch will cost $5.00 per person (all you can eat). Reports are that it is very good. This will be a great day and we hope for a good turnout. Reservations are not needed, so bring your car out and have a photo or two taken in a great setting! Please note that having paid $1.20 toll that the return trip over the bridge is free. See you there. FEBRUARY TOUR 1 By the time you read this, everyone should have received the P.I. National magazine with full information on the February Membership Meet at Anaheim, on February 2 and 3. We were going to try to get information on the seminars out to the membership before the event, but that may not be possible. In any case, several of us are planning to either drive or carpool to Anaheim, and also share motel rooms. The caravan will get together at the University Towne Center Shopping Center, just off Interstate 805. If you want to catch a ride, or can provide transportation, call Jim Price at for information and coordination in this matter. See you there. FEBRUARY TOUR 2 The annual El Cajon Car and Parts Swap Meet will be held on Feb 23 and 24 this year. The place is the field adjacent to the Cajon Speedway just south of the airport. The freeway exit is Bradley Avenue off Route 67; most of us know where this is. Several of our members have expressed interest in selling space at the event and we have decided to request adjacent spaces for a "Packard Row". John Sands has taken charge of arrangements, so if you want a booth on "Packard Row", make your request known now! Call John at In addition to individual member's spaces, the club will have a space in which members can sell some of their own goods, along with promoting the club. This is an unofficial tour, but generally an important one in that it gives the club a chance to bring in new members by its visibility at the event, and it gives our members a chance to see what the rest of the hobby is doing. Many Vendors come from quite far to this swap meet as well as to other meets in Southern California. We get a chance to see what other people are charging for their parts and cars and can then get a pulse on the hobby in general. A good show, we hope! See you there. CARS FOR SALE 1955 Clipper Four Door. 26,000 actual miles, Ultramatic, power brakes, manual windows, original two tone green paint, always garaged. $4500. or offer.... Brian McDougall 4658 EI Cerrito San Diego, California (714) Patrician, baby blue, 'ready for touring', almost all exterior work done including chrome, emblems, tires, wheels, etc. Mechanically fine. For show, interior work still to be done - EXPRESS YOURSELF! Al Shearer (714)
4 TECHNICAL CORNER by Mark Rothermich Those of us who attempt to restore and/or repair most post-war Packards know that the bane of many of these attempts can be the inability to obtain proper rebuilding and maintenance service on the Ultramatic transmission. People who are familiar with the workings of this unit and can perform the work to the standards that Packard owners expect, are too few and far between. It is such that we are constantly following leads in the hope of turning up more people vyho are capable (and willing) to work on these ur~its. One such lead has turned up the following firm; Aallmatics, Div. of Deltadynamics, Box 2283, Green Bay, Wisconsin Telephone (414) From the information that one of our members provided, this firm advertises that it is a Charter Member of the Society of Automatic Transmission Dynadromed Rebuilders. (Dynadromes are transmission testing units used by rebuilders, and are built by the parent firm). Their stated policy is to sell rebuilt/ re-engineered Ultramatics on an exchange basis only. They will offer a two 'lear warranty on the units provided the terms of their Sales Policy is recognized. Stated cost is to be between $400. and $500. per unit, FOB Green Bay, Wisconsin. As time progresses more information will be obtained and made available. In other matters... the Region's Parts and Service listing is in need of updating. The following changes should be noted. No longer in business: Tony Cortes (instrument repair), Heritage Coachworks - (restoration), Steve Cullen - (tires), and Packard Parts Unlimited. Change of address: Frost & French - (P.O. Box is no longer active). NOT RECOMMENDED: Robert De Mars. Perhaps sometime this year the listing should be fully updated and reprinted to reflect new information; anyone willing to tackle this job? Finally, much thanks to Dick Hagen for the use of his Hollanders Manual. The addition of this new batch of information covering the late Twenties to the mid Forties, expands our interchange collection considerably. Again we thank you very much, Dick. P.S. Happy New Year!! 1908 Packard retrieves a broken glider near Milwaukee. The passenger looks none the worse for wear. Photo courtesy of Milwaukee Public museum, by way of the Cormorant Newsletter.
